heaven comes.... at a price..... a typical autumn day and too long a gap since the bbq was fired up gave rise to a search for good burger... and since it had been a while, my buddy and i decided to waive the usual burger king or wendy's, for a more 'elevated' experience. burger heaven.
arriving mid afternoon on a tuesday, we were the only patrons on premises, and as one would hope, the service was quick and attentive. (no problem there). my friend had never been, but being one of the coupon and "what's on special" persuasion, he chose the special of the day - while i decided to order 'the works'- weighing in at about $15.00.
upon ordering we were asked the typical questions regarding drinks and side dishes - the waitress indicating salad, fries, 1/2 and 1/2, cesarsalador onion rings. now here we will take some responsibility for our actions... both of us declined the usual, with both of us opting for onion rings instead of fries, and my buddy, a cesar salad.... all under the assurance that these were fresh and 'home-made'.
soon thereafter we receiving a pair of piping hot burgers and onion rings, with my friends salad. the or's came as about 5 or 6 decent sized, with the rest just being batter, or a couple of wedding ring sized pieces. the cesarsaladwas pretty limp, and certainly not fresh. however we dug in and after a perfunctory 'how is everything' had our drinks refreshed. so far - ok, not spectacular - but ok.
the real shocker came at the time of the bill. over $50.00 for a pair of burgers, some mediocre onion rings and 1/2 cesar salad. and because my friend had gone 1/2 and 1/2 - he was charged for two upgrades - at $2.99 each - for essentially 1/2 side of onion rings, and 1/2 side of salad. so the best part of $6.00 for an upgrade to the existing fare. in somewhat of a state of shock (we could have gone to earl's cheaper), we paid our bill, reflecting on our good fortune for not being penalized for the (single) refill too.
in summary - i guess if you are a fan of outrageous burgers, this might still be the place to go... but as value for the dollar, i (and my buddy) consider it very poor. if the or's andsaladhad been full-sized, and fresh....well, frankly i'd still consider it too expensive. even with the coupon mentioned by the waitress in the local newspaper, this meal would have been cheaper at a cactus club, earls, or even 'the keg'. so in terms of future choices for a decent hamburger experience? well, i guess... heaven can wait...................
