i'm a massive fan of ramen, and have been scouring brisbane for ramen, so i thought to check wagaya out. the atmosphere here is nice, with plenty of decor, gentle music, and self-contained cubicles seating 4 to 8 people. the ordering system is via a touchscreen per cubicle, which is convenient in some ways. the restaurant is definitely optimised for groups, although does not accept split bills.
unfortunately, the food (that i tried) was lacking in quality: i ordered the char siu ramen set for $16.50, which comes with curry rice and fried dumplings (gyoza) - there is no option to order any ramen by itself. order to food-on-the-table was under 10 minutes - although note that the ramen set was the only item on my table, and it was 3pm.
the ramen was disappointing: the soup does not have the depth of flavour of places like genkotsu or hakataya, the 5 pieces of char siu (thin-sliced bbq pork pieces) are overly thin (1 to 1.5mm) and tough, and the noodles - whilst chewy and nice enough - cost $3.50 per extra serving, whereas most other ramen restaurants give 1 extra serving for free (genkotsu runcorn, prior to closing their kitchen at 2:30pm, asked me if i wanted another free extra noodle, even when i already ordered one, and i was eating alone - even if it was a mistake, it was very generous).
the sides are mediocre - the curry tastes ok, but was poorly plated (see pic), and the there was nothing in the sauce (not even cheap mixed veges or garnish on top) - go to kadoya if you want jap curry. there were just two pork gyozas, which weren't that juicy - try haraguku gyoza. for optional sides of higher quality, you could do worse than mappen in sunnybank plaza.
verdict: if you have a group, and you'll be in the valley during lunch or dinner, maybe check them out for novelty (apparently reservations are highly recommended) - but they're not worth going out of your way to go to.
random notes:
- they don't answer the restaurant phone number even off-peak times like 2pm, instead simply points you via voicemail to their reservation hotline.
- eftpos minimum is $20.
- there is only one entrance, and if you approach from the wrong sides, there are no indications that you're at the right spot. in fact, the side i approached from (with the police station) showed that the building (which lists wagaya) as closed or renovation - they really need signages for new customers.
