negative : please read this review before you think to visit this place

the worst and most careless staff i have ever seen in my life. i am a pure vegetarian i ordered samosas specifically telling that its vegetable samosa ... the cashier repeatedordercorrectly ... i was served the same and after having few bites of samosa it and felt something wrong with it ... i checked with my friend and he confirmed it's beef.

and when i turned to the kitchen with my plate they tell it's ok it's just a small mistake ... i don't know why do these people have the permission to serve food to public of they are not capable of catering to basic needs.

the management and the public must ban such places from serving the public... they didn't even have courtesy to pay back for it or even apologize with courtesy.

shameless idiots....

i would like to teach these guys a lesson please suggest how can i sue the management for the careless behavior

just plain bad service, food, & pricing. tried to eat lunch here a while back - what a disappointing experience. the place is beyond funky, youorderlunch in the small, worn bar area, and the lunch menu choices are few if you are a meat eater. and what is there is incredibly overpriced.

we initially ordered chicken curry and pork vindaloo, with anorderof naan, anorderof raita (yeap, you are charged separately for this condiment) ,a regular kingfisher beer and lavender lemonade - this was over $39. didn't realize that the beer was a regular for the price they were charging.

after a few minutes, we were told they didn't have the pork vindaloo (this was on the daily special board for today), and since there was no other dish we wanted, we just cancelled the order, and paid for the beer and lemonade - over $10!

too many excellent choices around ch to bother with this overpriced, service challenged mess. - went down the street to mint for an excellent meal.

mediocre at best. we went after hearing a lot of good things about this place. what we found was a lot of hit and miss. first was the service design. youorderat a counter and wait for your food to be served. this would work for a fast-moving operation. however, this clearly was not. long lines, which of course led to people trying to decide what they wanted for dessert, or organizing an appetizer (which would come out with everything you ordered), etc. because no one wanted to encounter the line again. forget about getting a second beer or wine either. compounding this was the very confusing issue of busing tables. some people did their own, some did not. there was no clearly established process for this. as such, people stood around while you ate waiting for tables to be cleared, or by chance for a cleared table.

the food was also hit and miss. the saag paneer was pretty good, but did not separate itself from any other place. the goat curry was outstanding. perfectly spiced. however, it was on a "plate" that came crammed with many different samplings of indian cuisine that seemed forced. the cracker and flatbread were too similar to go on one plate. the chutney and dal were fine, especially the dal. there were two other samplings as well. perhaps all of these samplings would have worked if they were served over several courses? i would have preferred to have the option of just the curry with rice, and maybe some raita.

we ordered two sides as well. one was the samosas, which were supposed to be an appetizer. these things were huge and dense, and way too filling. we were used to the lighter, fried versions. i would not call these appetizers. the other side was some garlic naan. again, we were used to the naan cooked with actual crushed garlic on it. instead we got this naan brushed with garlic butter that became limp and soggy.

might try this place again, but not for a while.

i was hooked the minute i walked in the door. here was this small, but inviting place. you walk up to the counter and give the staff yourorderand most times you will see vimala in the kitchen along with her other chefs, stirring sauces, chopping locally purchased vegetables or meat, or attending to some other task.

thoroughly enjoyable. i've been waiting for months to get to vimala's in chapel hill- mainly because we've been working to eat out less and also because it's a 40 min drive. last friday i finally got the chance to check it out.

finding it wasn't very hard, but i never knew that little courtyard existed. and- it's a great place to hang out and eat! we didn't have to wait in line long at all, but we got there at about 5:40. ordering was pretty easy- except for narrowing down the number of items we really wanted. we ordered- pakoras for a starter, saag paneer, and the chicken tandoori. the selection of beer was great and if i were not dieting, i would absolutely have ordered the lavender pound-cake or more na-an and samosas.

as for the dining area, i really like the comfy and arty space. the rugs on the walls and tables/chair selections were nice in their variety. there was plenty of outside seating and even some great live guitar, but we opted for inside due to the lovely pollen season (definitely a 'local' thing). they give you a number when youorderand our pakoras arrived quickly. they were delicious and we enjoyed both sauces that came with.

the dinner entrees were served w/ a nice spiced rice, a delicious green salad, and a healthy amount of the selected entree. the saag paneer was fantastic, but the amount of cheese was just a tiny bit little low. also, the chicken tandoori was a smidge dry, but that didn't stop us from devouring all of them both completely. flavors for both were lovely. we'll definitely be back, but it won't take so long the next time!

i'll definitely be back- and much sooner this time to try the rest of the dinner options.

food was good...waiting in line not so much. i loved the food but i thought it was pretty expensive. especially since you have to wait in line toorderyour food and carry all of your drinks with you to your table. other than that...like i said the food was good. if they could just have a person cruise the dining room to refill drinks it would be better.

i had to go to this place when i was here for a temporary visit to this city.
i was staying in carolina inn and i wanted to have indian food and was referred to this joint.
i don't know how there is so many raving about this place
the first thing i hated in this place was standing in a queue toorderfor almost 20 mts and after paying for the food i had to carry my own cutleries water glasses and find my own table

i had two apps, and two thali for $50 and which was not worth it . the thali had 7 dishes which had no seasoning to it
if they know what is a chapati i would not had that black grey thing in my table..
i understand supporting local for that i cannot have that black thing in my table as a chapati.
if this is the best indian restaurant around i pity the chapel hill people for the worst quality of taste buds they have,,,,
sorry i am not a great reviewer but still i could not digest the money i paid for the experience.
while eating my friend has hiccups and i had to leave my meal to get him water as there is no soul to fill up water for us...
the worst experience i had for visiting chapel hill is eating out in vim alas
