not a big fan of this fusion-indian food place. they have some really nice dishes but on the whole, i feel it's a bit expensive for what it's worth. they have a great ambience and great service but doesn't suit my taste palette.

negative : please read this review before you think to visit this place

the worst and most careless staff i have ever seen in my life. i am a pure vegetarian i ordered samosas specifically telling that its vegetable samosa ... the cashier repeated order correctly ... i was served the same and after having few bites of samosa it and felt something wrong with it ... i checked with my friend and he confirmed it's beef.

and when i turned to the kitchen with my plate they tell it's ok it's just a small mistake ... i don't know why do these people have the permission to serve food to public of they are not capable of catering to basic needs.

the management and the public must ban such places from serving the public... they didn't even have courtesy to pay back for it or even apologize with courtesy.

shameless idiots....

i would like to teach these guys a lesson please suggest how can i sue the management for the careless behavior

anyone wanting to check out vimala's, understand that the restaurant is in the back of a larger plaza and hidden behind kipos restaurant. go through the courtyard and you'll see the arch with signage for vimala's curryblossom cafe.

just plain bad service, food, & pricing. tried to eat lunch here a while back - what a disappointing experience. the place is beyond funky, you order lunch in the small, worn bar area, and the lunch menu choices are few if you are a meat eater. and what is there is incredibly overpriced.

we initially ordered chicken curry and pork vindaloo, with an order of naan, an order of raita (yeap, you are charged separately for this condiment) ,a regular kingfisher beer and lavender lemonade - this was over $39. didn't realize that the beer was a regular for the price they were charging.

after a few minutes, we were told they didn't have the pork vindaloo (this was on the daily special board for today), and since there was no other dish we wanted, we just cancelled the order, and paid for the beer and lemonade - over $10!

too many excellent choices around ch to bother with this overpriced, service challenged mess. - went down the street to mint for an excellent meal.

great indian food!. vimalas is an adorable little cafe with both good service and great food. i ordered the two vegetable somosas (which were only $6). they were very filling, beautifully made and had great flavor. i would definitely recommend this restaurant!

favorite place in chapel hill- great caterers too!. i think this is the best place in chapel hill. they have amazing food and service, and with vimala's progressive policies (feeding those who can't afford to pay for the food, living wages, etc), it's very representative of "excellence with a heart"- what the city/university aspire to be. i'm also very thankful for all the vegan options!

i've also catered several events with them, and they've done a fantastic job.

poor catering experience. i had been to vimala's a few times, and enjoyed my visits. based on this experience, i decided to entrust vimala with catering for a surprise baby shower for my wife. unfortunately, i was left very disappointed with the catering experience.

firstly, vimala didn't deliver the food at the time that i requested, but instead chose to deliver later with the pretense that the food would be better served warm. later, it occurred to me that she had been overwhelmed at work and needed to buy some time. then while having dinner, my guests discovered that the biryani wasn't completely cooked. sadly, i found myself explaining to so many guests that they should avoid the biryani. after the party, i delivered the half-cooked biryani back to vimala myself. although she apologized, vimala suggested i should've called her earlier about the problem, as it were my fault that i didn't. i found that attitude rather arrogant. and finally, when i returned the biryani, i found her cafe was overwhelmed with guests. clearly, she must have been overworked and understaffed, and there was no way she could've done something about her error even if i had called. in any case, given her many years of experience, i couldn't believe she didn't decide to check the food she delivered. vimala clearly let us down, after i entrusted her for an important occasion. i hope you never have to deal with such an experience.

i'd recommend avoiding vimala's for any catering event.

pretty awesome food, if you love eating bone fragments.

we ordered chicken curry thali and were disappointed to find that more than 50% if the chicken was bone and most of it was in the form of tiny little fragments.

garlic naan was alright, not the best but not the worst. vegetable samosas were quite good.

mediocre at best. we went after hearing a lot of good things about this place. what we found was a lot of hit and miss. first was the service design. you order at a counter and wait for your food to be served. this would work for a fast-moving operation. however, this clearly was not. long lines, which of course led to people trying to decide what they wanted for dessert, or organizing an appetizer (which would come out with everything you ordered), etc. because no one wanted to encounter the line again. forget about getting a second beer or wine either. compounding this was the very confusing issue of busing tables. some people did their own, some did not. there was no clearly established process for this. as such, people stood around while you ate waiting for tables to be cleared, or by chance for a cleared table.

the food was also hit and miss. the saag paneer was pretty good, but did not separate itself from any other place. the goat curry was outstanding. perfectly spiced. however, it was on a "plate" that came crammed with many different samplings of indian cuisine that seemed forced. the cracker and flatbread were too similar to go on one plate. the chutney and dal were fine, especially the dal. there were two other samplings as well. perhaps all of these samplings would have worked if they were served over several courses? i would have preferred to have the option of just the curry with rice, and maybe some raita.

we ordered two sides as well. one was the samosas, which were supposed to be an appetizer. these things were huge and dense, and way too filling. we were used to the lighter, fried versions. i would not call these appetizers. the other side was some garlic naan. again, we were used to the naan cooked with actual crushed garlic on it. instead we got this naan brushed with garlic butter that became limp and soggy.

might try this place again, but not for a while.

vimala’s focus on local ingredients mean you get indian cuisine that’s a level up from the usual. think plump samosas stuffed with potatoey goodness and crunchy pakora’s made of fresh vegetables. my red snapper thali plate was spicy, delicately flavored bone-in fish with a wonderful assortment of small appetizers.

i was hooked the minute i walked in the door. here was this small, but inviting place. you walk up to the counter and give the staff your order and most times you will see vimala in the kitchen along with her other chefs, stirring sauces, chopping locally purchased vegetables or meat, or attending to some other task.
