not a big fan of this fusion-indianfoodplace. they have some really nice dishes but on the whole, i feel it's a bit expensive for what it's worth. they have a great ambience and great service but doesn't suit my taste palette.

negative : please read this review before you think to visit this place

the worst and most careless staff i have ever seen in my life. i am a pure vegetarian i ordered samosas specifically telling that its vegetable samosa ... the cashier repeated order correctly ... i was served the same and after having few bites of samosa it and felt something wrong with it ... i checked with my friend and he confirmed it's beef.

and when i turned to the kitchen with my plate they tell it's ok it's just a small mistake ... i don't know why do these people have the permission to servefoodto public of they are not capable of catering to basic needs.

the management and the public must ban such places from serving the public... they didn't even have courtesy to pay back for it or even apologize with courtesy.

shameless idiots....

i would like to teach these guys a lesson please suggest how can i sue the management for the careless behavior

favorite place in chapel hill- great caterers too!. i think this is the best place in chapel hill. they have amazingfoodand service, and with vimala's progressive policies (feeding those who can't afford to pay for the food, living wages, etc), it's very representative of "excellence with a heart"- what the city/university aspire to be. i'm also very thankful for all the vegan options!

i've also catered several events with them, and they've done a fantastic job.

poor catering experience. i had been to vimala's a few times, and enjoyed my visits. based on this experience, i decided to entrust vimala with catering for a surprise baby shower for my wife. unfortunately, i was left very disappointed with the catering experience.

firstly, vimala didn't deliver thefoodat the time that i requested, but instead chose to deliver later with the pretense that thefoodwould be better served warm. later, it occurred to me that she had been overwhelmed at work and needed to buy some time. then while having dinner, my guests discovered that the biryani wasn't completely cooked. sadly, i found myself explaining to so many guests that they should avoid the biryani. after the party, i delivered the half-cooked biryani back to vimala myself. although she apologized, vimala suggested i should've called her earlier about the problem, as it were my fault that i didn't. i found that attitude rather arrogant. and finally, when i returned the biryani, i found her cafe was overwhelmed with guests. clearly, she must have been overworked and understaffed, and there was no way she could've done something about her error even if i had called. in any case, given her many years of experience, i couldn't believe she didn't decide to check thefoodshe delivered. vimala clearly let us down, after i entrusted her for an important occasion. i hope you never have to deal with such an experience.

i'd recommend avoiding vimala's for any catering event.

mediocre at best. we went after hearing a lot of good things about this place. what we found was a lot of hit and miss. first was the service design. you order at a counter and wait for yourfoodto be served. this would work for a fast-moving operation. however, this clearly was not. long lines, which of course led to people trying to decide what they wanted for dessert, or organizing an appetizer (which would come out with everything you ordered), etc. because no one wanted to encounter the line again. forget about getting a second beer or wine either. compounding this was the very confusing issue of busing tables. some people did their own, some did not. there was no clearly established process for this. as such, people stood around while you ate waiting for tables to be cleared, or by chance for a cleared table.

thefoodwas also hit and miss. the saag paneer was pretty good, but did not separate itself from any other place. the goat curry was outstanding. perfectly spiced. however, it was on a "plate" that came crammed with many different samplings of indian cuisine that seemed forced. the cracker and flatbread were too similar to go on one plate. the chutney and dal were fine, especially the dal. there were two other samplings as well. perhaps all of these samplings would have worked if they were served over several courses? i would have preferred to have the option of just the curry with rice, and maybe some raita.

we ordered two sides as well. one was the samosas, which were supposed to be an appetizer. these things were huge and dense, and way too filling. we were used to the lighter, fried versions. i would not call these appetizers. the other side was some garlic naan. again, we were used to the naan cooked with actual crushed garlic on it. instead we got this naan brushed with garlic butter that became limp and soggy.

might try this place again, but not for a while.

food was good...waiting in line not so much. i loved thefoodbut i thought it was pretty expensive. especially since you have to wait in line to order yourfoodand carry all of your drinks with you to your table. other than that...like i said thefoodwas good. if they could just have a person cruise the dining room to refill drinks it would be better.

i had to go to this place when i was here for a temporary visit to this city.
i was staying in carolina inn and i wanted to have indianfoodand was referred to this joint.
i don't know how there is so many raving about this place
the first thing i hated in this place was standing in a queue to order for almost 20 mts and after paying for thefoodi had to carry my own cutleries water glasses and find my own table

i had two apps, and two thali for $50 and which was not worth it . the thali had 7 dishes which had no seasoning to it
if they know what is a chapati i would not had that black grey thing in my table..
i understand supporting local for that i cannot have that black thing in my table as a chapati.
if this is the best indian restaurant around i pity the chapel hill people for the worst quality of taste buds they have,,,,
sorry i am not a great reviewer but still i could not digest the money i paid for the experience.
while eating my friend has hiccups and i had to leave my meal to get him water as there is no soul to fill up water for us...
the worst experience i had for visiting chapel hill is eating out in vim alas

wonderful catering experience!. we had vimala's cater a big party for us (for 30 people) this weekend and everything was perfect. thefoodwas delicious - she made some vegetarian and some chicken dishes, and across a range of spiciness, and all the guests were talking about how great thefoodwas. she was very easy to work with, flexible and punctual. i was very happy and would recommend her catering to anyone!!

not typical indian :). as a south indian, i must say, vimala's is unique. it is indianfoodmade with great organic ingredients...why hasn't anyone done this before?

i had the masala dosa, and the sambar was great. it wasn't bland at all, and they used okra, which i have never seen before (it tasted great though). the potato palya (spelling?) was delicious and flavorful as well.

will certainly be back again.

awesome. i gotta admit, i always get the buffet at all the indian places i go to and this place doesn't do a lunch buffet. i got the chole bhatura and it was perfect. the presentation was excellent and the bread served with it was unbelievable; far superior to any naan i've had. it's a little weird that they have buckets in the eating area that i guess they expect diners to put dirty plates and glasses in, for this quality offoodi think they could pay a busboy minimum wage to do it. this is the finest quality indianfoodi can ever remember having and if i lived in the area i'd make a habit of going here once a week.

fantastic. i grew up in south india and have eaten indianfoodin many different restaurants in the usa. the idli/vada/sambar i had for lunch here is the best i've had in the country.

i considered it to be as good as the quality as you would get in a good indian home. for example, typically in indian restaurants (even in good indian restaurants) the sambar is very watered down and they only add small pieces of vegetables.

the sambar at vimala's was very authentic. it had big pieces of fresh vegetables, was thick, and tasted fantastic. i was just shocked by how good it was.

i will definitely be going here again and will drag all my indian friends along!

tasty, unique, affordable, local!. this is a very unique restaurant. you won't find a menu like it anywhere in town! my husband and i ate there for dinner right after they opened, and i had a delicious chickpea dish served on a whole wheat pita. they source most of their ingredients from local farms, meaning thefoodis of the highest quality and is environmentally responsible. they have a local pork barbecue i am dying to try next (happy pigs = tasty pigs!). so support a great local business and get a great affordable meal why you are at it!
