our tour of indian restaurants continued yesterday with a visit to veeraswamy for lunch with friends.
it had been a while since our last visit to this "grande dame" of london indian restaurants, but we were looking forward to return. the contrast between the narrow entrance hall off regent street and the spacious restaurant upstairs is even greater at lunchtime, when the restaurant is filled with light from the large windows facing the street. we were showed to a table by the window (better for our photos!)
we ordered cocktails: my wife had the guava and passionfruit mojito, and i had a bombay blush - not sweet at all, grapefruit based, very good.
our friends arrived and we ordered. for starters, i had the two kebabs (chicken and lamb), served with mint and coriander chutney - very good. my wife went for the veggie option: a very good looking raj kachori, a puri shaped like a nest, filled with potatoes and other vegetables and smothered in yoghurt, chutneys and pomegranate seeds (served cold). she was not convinced by the taste, though, and half of it stayed on the plate.
for mains, i ordered the tandoori raan - lamb shank off the bone, served with a cashewnut gravy - very good. my wife went for the lamb biryani - a huge portion, but not as good as the one she had at gymkhana the other day. a nice valpolicella was a great fit with these meaty dishes.
i left a bit of room for dessert, and was very happy with my choice of the almond halwa tart, served with vanilla ice cream.
theservicewas prompt and professional, as you would expect from a restaurant that's been around for almost 90 years. veeraswamy is aleays a good bet if you want to impress visitors to london, or even for a business dinner (they also have a nice private dining room upstairs).
