tonto bar & grill

new favorite. our first visit. found tonto bar & grill on the list for arizona restaurant week. what agreatplace!. pretty grounds and nice southwest ambience. we selelcted from the special menu for restaurant week. our server, tanya was very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. our starters were the beet salad and the arugula/brie salad. both generous, well composed with house made dressings. we both selected the pork schnitzel entree with german potato salad and green beans and carrots. it was fabulous! gorgeous presentation and very delicious. desserts were the grapefruit cake and a warm chocolate buttermilk cake with chocolate ganache sauce and pecan ice cream. we were so happy and so full. we'll be stopping back this summer, the menu looked really good and the special sounded delicious. a+.

go broke on bad food. nice atmosphere, but the food is never the same twice. some things are good, others are terrible. service varies from night to night, and when it gets busy you will wish you went somewhere else to eat. the prices are way too high for what you get. oddly enough, cartwrights just north up the road, is unbelievably good and they are owned by the same group. go figure. never had a bad meal or experience at cartwrights, but never had a good meal orgreatexperience at tonto. it is a mystery.

what agreatplace to sit outdoors overlooking the beautiful green and desert mountains! the food was fabulous! we arrived around 4:30 pm in time to enjoy the evening's waning and was able to dine for a couple of hours. i would rate this restaurant more like $$-$$$ for the meals and highly recommend that you always confirm the cost for alcoholic drinks before ordering. we had a little baileys in our evening coffee for which were charged $8 plus the cost of the coffee! each of us (4) had one drink and only two of us coffee with the baileys and our bill was more for the liquor than the food. service started out great, but our server was moved inside when it got busy and then we were abandoned. would definitely go back but have learned a few things.
