4.5 excellent
we’re big fans of osteria ilaria and tipo 00 has been on the books for quite awhile. we finally managed to make a booking within reasonable time despite being known for their notorious waiting periods. we were pleased that they were operating with a full menu whilst having to adhere to distancing rules in such a small restaurant, that being said they did have outdoor dining as well.
we start off with a negroni each, much fruitier than the ones i’ve had as of late with a tart finish. we then moved onto wines, that of which our waiter was pretty knowledgeable with italian wines and helped us select one according to our preferentials.
they give us some complimentary focaccia with ricotta, the cheese is mild yet creamy and the focaccia was lightly seasoned and was springy and crisp. our first starter arrived, zucchini flowers stuffed with sweet spanner crab in a black garlic and tomato sauce. the batter was crispy yet light, almost like tempura.
we also had their chargrilled calamari which had a nice barbequed taste to it, this was served with farro and celery. we quite enjoyed the ox tongue which was super tender and the pink peppercorns made my mouth tingle.
the pastas we ordered all came at once, the gnocchi had a bit of body to it and wasn’t the fluffiest we’ve had, i could swing either way to be honest. it was tossed with tender duck meat and porcini mushrooms though since we were sharing between three of us, i don’t think i got any mushrooms. sauce was luscious and rich, to that of which they offered us more of that fabulous focaccia though most of the sauces clung onto the pastas so there wasn’t much to mop up. we also got their pappardelle with wagyu beef, a nice bite to the pasta and the meat fell apart easily. my favourite was the casarecce with raw egg yolk, guanciale and nettle. there’s just something so moreish about the savoury pasta and the explosion of flavour from the fat of the bacon. to the side we had their pomodori salad which was an assortment of sweet heirloom tomatoes, raspberry and red amaranth. perfect.
we got all their desserts as it would be the last time my friends would consume carbs for a while. i was already feeling the alcohol but they enjoyed a dessert wine each. their version of tiramisu (tipomisu) was reimagined, dark chocolate notes mostly masked the coffee. their yoghurt pannacotta was silky smooth and was accompanied with balsamic strawberries and a brown butter crumble for texture. their ricotta bomboloni was sugary and bouncy, the vanilla cream served on the outside instead of inside with a side of apricot.
quite on par with their sister restaurant with some give and takes. we thought theservicehere was outstanding, the waiter knew his stuff and properly explained the food and drink. the food came out in perfect sequence and there is little to fault. be sure to book far in advance to avoid disappointment.
