the yard (736 bellefonte street, 15232), a self-proclaimed "an american gastropub" is an inviting spot in shadyside. meaning that, with an entire section of their menu devoted to the grilled cheese sandwich, it was literally an invitation to come inside and check things ahhhht. across from william penn tavern, and nestled in what used to be pasta piatto (remember that place?) , the yard takes reservations; has lounge space, bar space, and dining space; and a very informative website. pay parking is very convenient at the shadyside garage; there are also pay parking spots on walnut street or in the many lots that run parallel to walnut street; and of course you can drive around the neighborhood for hours to find a free on-street space if you refuse to surrender to the pittsburgh parking authority. i went to the yard on a tuesday night with two of my girlfriends (jrt and mes). we immediately observed that the service was quitegood(our waitress cary was lovely and pleasant!), albeit the interior was nondescript and somewhat disappointing because it lacked individuality and intimacy. once settled, we took a look at the menu and figured out our plan. of course we ordered drinks! dj razzy fresh ($10, stoli razz, lime juice, simple syrup, razzamatazz, mint leaves, sprite), the anchor ($9, sailor jerry spiced rum, ginger beer, lime wedge) and angry palmer ($9, sweet tea vodka, lemonade, limoncello) the dj razzy fresh tasted like "a raspberry creamsicle" (as mes noted), the anchor was equal to a dark & stormy, and the angry palmer was "refereshing" (as jrt noted). our only issue was that these drinks were almost as expensive as the grilled cheese sandwiches. speaking of... considering that the yard features grilled cheese sandwiches, we agreed that we had to order exactly that. all of the grilled cheese sandwiches come with a side of fries (crispy battered or sweet potato) and tomato soup, which is a nice touch and quite a bargain. jrt was thrilled that the yard offered
