i've never loved sundays as much as i do this year. now that i am not working 6 or 12 hour shifts, i have so much time to explore my neighborhood, see a movie, spend time with family, and, of course, eat and drink. a recent sunday started with breakfast at the friendly toast . of course i started with a bloody mary. and took in the sights at this quirky restaurant. the wait was ~35 minutes but we got seats at the bar instead, and were able to order right away! the cayenne cheddar bread is out of this world! the rest of my breakfast was great, too, but this bread alone is worth the trip. after breakfast we walked around cambridge a bit, the headed over to fenway. it was hot - around 90*- and being without a/c at home, we decided to spend the afternoon at the movies. most of the time i am not an a/c fan, but this day was just too hot to be outside. we stopped at a few stores - one of them being rei where i looked at a new water belt for running. too bad it was $50!!! at the movies we end

one thing i love about reading food blogs is the hidden discoveries and wonderful places to eat, especially when you have never been to that place before. the name 'the friendly toast' came up in both food blogs and food websites with positivity. heck, even the name conjured an image of a piece of toast wearing white boots on its stick legs, stick arms swinging in mid walk waving and a huge wide smile. ok, i'm thinking of the peanut butter character but replaced it with a toast instead. the friendly toast isn't located in a touristy area or even in central boston. the closest one is in cambridge and is a distance from harvard square which most tourist ventures to. however, it's not difficult to get to if you're already travelling on the red line via train to harvard. from downtown boston or harvard, hop onto the red line and disembark at kendall station which should take no more than 10 minutes or so depending on which direction. fare is $2 one way. walk 10 minutes from the station to

friendly toast in kendall square may just have the best brunch ever! i'll admit, i really wanted to say best brunch in the world, but seeing as i haven't really tried every brunch menu in the world i thought it might be a little unfair. so for now i'll go with ever, and by "ever" i mean as long as i've lived thus far…although it may be safe to say it really is the best ever! from the 1950′s inspired decor to the w

prettyy good. fun, kitschy decor helps keep you visually stimulated while you wait for a table and/or the food. service isn't bad if you don't mind the hipster vibe that can at times seem a bit (perhaps unintentionally) pretentious. the food is prettyyy good. i guess i'd describe it as chunky or clumsy. the portions are a little too big and bulky, the homemade bread is good but the slices are intrusively thick, the eggs and sauces are all just sort of plopped on top of eachother. it's very.. heavy handed. i guess that's just their style, it's just a little too heavy. i mean it does satisfy a general craving for salty, fatty breakfast foods, but... y'know when you're hung over and you're hungry but the thought of too much food just makes you feel kind of sick? that's sort of how i felt lol. fun place though and brunch is hard to find so i'd go again if i were in the area. just be prepared to wait for a table on the weekends.

i love it....whatever you choose, you can't go wrong!! french toast is huge and yummy!!! bloody marys are great too =)

i attended college at the university of new hampshire, located in the small town of durham in the seacoast region. breakfasts back in those days were typically spent at one of the many dining halls on campus. and on special occasions the 15 minute drive d

yummy & fun. my husband and i visited boston last week and the friendly toast was our last stop before the airport. we got there around 9:15am and had to wait only about 5-10 minutes. there were tables available for large parties, but not us two.

the decor is funny and the staff was generally pleasant (if not the quickest in the world). the menu is very large, but we chose a special for the day, the tijuana benedict. it was really very good with jalapeño toast, two poached eggs, chorizo sausage, and onions/peppers. it was topped generously with hollandaise sauce, which i didn't really care for. the home fries (side) were out of this world! i would definitely order it again, sans hollandaise. the sauce was too much, but the rest was spot on!

when we were leaving (about 10:30am) the line was out the door and the wait was 30+ minutes.

get there early!!!

go for the setting. great ambience, great location (parking is ample and garage is right across the street). as a long time resident of the area who just moved away i was a little sad to have done so having this place close now.

that being said, the food isn't great. it's barely ok. my hashbrowns were overcooked and burned, my meal wasn't seasoned very well. we went on a friday morning and barely anyone was there so i know it wasn't due to rush.

i can't help but love everything else about it - they food selection, the coffee cups, the cute tables. i'll be oging back for sure but mostly because it's hip and fun and makes me smile, not because i'm hungry.

retro-kitsch fun and food!. i went to brunch at the friendly toast with friends, and enjoyed a rich meal and friendly service. the atmosphere is completely over-the-top retro kitsch, and the food is unapologetically rich. the four of us shared the king pancake, two chocolate chip and banana pancakes smeared with peanut butter, and topped with whipped cream and bacon. i ordered "the bus boy," which had a list of ingredients scrambled into eggs and served with toast. my husband ordered green eggs and ham, which were quite good.

the friendly toast is delicious, generous, and not for those seeking simple food and decor. the food is very good, and the service is friendly and efficient.

a neighborhood icon in portsmouth, new hampshire since 1994, the friendly toast has been a hit there, commanding long waits for its creative breakfast items, huge portions, and great food. this past spring, owners melissa and robert jasper finally opened

yum!. the servings are generous. they have your standard pancakes and waffles, and then they have creative and delicious variations. it is at the top of my list for breakfast-food outings.
