the basha cuisine

authentic mediterranean now available in kansas city. even if you don't know if you like mediterranean food, you probably like: beef, chicken or lamb over yellow rice with warm pita bread with excellent salad and hummus. yum! at first, the basha is easy to miss. but head to d'bronx pizza on metcalf and 105th. drive drive left hugging the building. you'll see the small sign and it's facing the walmart neighborhood grocery. whether you've been to the mediterranean and want to be reminded of the great flavors or you just like to try new foods, you will like labasha. not spicy, just flavorful. prices are great. it's very clean and easy access from your car in a strip mall. walk right up. very friendly staff. wonderful egyptian owner.

gateway cuisine. note: not easily visible from metcalfe or 105th. on north side of strip mall behind pier 1.
dined with a very elderly companion who has a light appetite and who has become fairly unadventurous in food choices. getting a bit tired of the johnson county chain chain (even some of the nonchain restaurants seem standardized here) i gambled that a middle eastern restaurant would have enough familiar choices (most people would eat bits of chicken with rice, right?) that it would please both of us.
basha did. we shared an appetizer combo, added some tabbouleh and a chicken schewrma. i thought all dishes were quite acceptable and some very good. companion ate quite a bit by her standards, the salad/tabbouleh, hummus/pita, rice and chicken were successful. she cautiously tried the falafel and decided it was a concept. she avoided the baba ganoush and dolmanthes which meant she missed some of the nicest spiced dishes. my rice pudding was excellent and she was happy with ordinary ice cream. she did miss being able to have a glass of wine but understood why it might not be available.
service was thoughtful, ambiance a happy medium between the undercapitalized and worn look of some ethnic restaurants and the slickness of chains.

very good. been here 3 or 4 times, the food is excellent, value is very good, service is good, and deserts in particular are worth trying and very reasonable (no $10 molten fudge cake from a box here). baba ganouj appetizer and shish tawook (chicken kabobs) are standouts for me.

another example of solid ethnic food that really disproves the "white suburb chain food" myth of johnson county. given the number of groupons recently i'm worried they're looking for more business. hoping this review spurs some confidence, this place really is a great value and excellent food. take your family here instead of cheesecake or red robin tonight, its a good experience.

i wouldn't recommend to a friend. the food is not bad (with the exception of the fact that they will serve you a pound of rice with 2 ounces of chicken). nevertheless, it is tasty. however, the way the manager treats his customers is unbelievable. he bends the rules and has no shame of being unfair to his customers. i have never seen a restaurant business behaving like this.

great atmosphere, good service, nice menu, food better than average but very light on favors compared to other similar. nice range of foods on menu but as someone that eats this kind of food often it needs more spices.

very good!. we were very impressed with the food! cannot wait to go back. we had the shawerma plate and the shish tawook. the shawerma was a little over cooked so the chicken was dry but the sauce was so flavorful and tasty so i still enjoyed it very much. the shish tawook(kabobs) were our favorite and so so tasty. the salad that the serve first was one of the best salads i've ever had. the hummus was really good and the way they garnish it with oils and spices made it even better.
our only complaint would be the restaurant was very cold! they even had the lights off when we first walked in (there wasn't any other diners) not sure if the owner is trying to save money? we just would have enjoyed the food more had it not been so cold.

excellent menu, service, and atmosphere. this place was impeccable in every way. we visited on a wednesday evening, and were the only family there, which is surprising considering how amazing our experience was. the place is only 6 months old- but c'mon overland park- this will be your new favorite place, so try them already!! we had the gryo sandwich, falafel entree, and beef shwarma entree. all absolutely delicious, with generous portions and nice presentations. i've not enjoyed better middle eastern or mediterranean cuisine anywhere in kc. our server was also a highlight- very gracious, entertained our little ones, and checked on us frequently. five stars.

bright flavors. came here with my family one sunday and had a very nice lunch. i ordered the veggie lunch combo plate. it was a lot of food and everything was good. it started with a salad which was good, though there was a lot of dressing. the falafel and hummus were really good, the falafels warm and crunchy and the hummus smooth. the baba ganouj was a little heavy on the lemon juice and the dolmades were a little greasy, but still better than many dolmades i've had.

my dad loved his beef shawerma sandwich. my sister got the bash chicken sandwich which would have been really bland if it wasn't for the spread that came with it which we found out was a mixture of potato, vinegar and spices. my mom enjoyed her falafel sandwich.

great food; like homemade. i love this restaurant in overland park. the food is delicious and tastes like homemade, instead of restaurant fare. the lunch combos are great. gyros, kabobs, etc also come with rice, small salad, and a plate of hummus and pita bread. only problem is the service. they are way understaffed and too many customers for one or two waitresses to handle.. don't be in a hurry. i will be back soon for some wonderful mediterranean meals.

well worth the 45 minute drive from leavenworth. the hummus was exceptional, and the mixed grill for two was equally delicious and ridiculously inexpensive. prompt and courteous waitstaff ripped off an already great meal. only regret was we didn't save room for desert.

very disappointed. perhaps it was a bad night for the chef and we did have a large table (10+). everything except for one bite of chicken and the rice was over cooked and terribly dry. the sauces were watery which didn't help the situation. even the turkish coffee which we both drink often had no coffee flavor, just a hint of cardamon.

in fairness one of the members of our party enjoyed lebanese nights and i didn't hear anyone else in our party complain. so perhaps it was our taste buds which were off.

an oasis in overland park. for those of us who are on the mediterranean diet, the basha is an oasis in the desert of restaurants in overland park. the food is both healthy and tasty. when you need to avoid high fats and salt, the seasonings at the basha provide a place where you can relax and enjoy the food.

went for the first time tonight. had the baba ganouj as an appetizer, and tried the gyro plate and the shish tawook as our main courses. absolutely beautiful flavors, so well balanced. thoroughly enjoyed the food, and the service was attentive and friendly. our server, raquel, made our dinner enjoyable and took time to make recommendations and explain the seasonings and spices being used. we will definitely be returning!
