great ambiance.  great building.  feels like you've stepped out of calgary for a couple of hours.  staff is knowledgable, menu is delightful, and the wine list is great.  will definitely be going back!!

decor and ambiance are wonderful, it was a beautiful place to dine for an anniversary. however, food was notgreator exciting. we ordered a variety of menu items. we got a caesar salad to start, the meat board, mushroom risotto and chicken dinner. none of them were all that good or flavourful. risotto was under cooked and had very little flavour. the chicken was a weird texture and the caesar salad came in full leaves so you had to cut it yourself. service was notgreateither, we had all the tables around us getting bread but not us and our waiter didn't  come to check on us until we flagged him down to get us more water and bread. overall, i'd definitely go elsewhere.

i was pretty disappointed by this place. if we are spending $80 on a meal per person the food should be nearly perfectly executed. my husband and i went here for our wedding anniversary so we wanted to treat ourselves.

so first the food tasted good. what they sought to accomplish in flavour they did. however i lower my rating because i feel like they didn't offer anything new to the food. for example the gnocchi with pesto is literally gnocchi with pesto. their wasn't really any thing all too new.
this being said, the classics aregreatbut my major issue is... if you are going to offer the classics at exorbitant prices then you have to freaking nail them. as in, once i eat that i should be saying "dang this is some of the best carbonara i've had". but all of the pasta was overcooked. soggy floppy sad little dough. let's take the gnocchi again... they were so soggy that some pieces had begun melding together to create one super sized gnocchi. also ordered some lobster pasta (can't remember the name... might have even been a special since i can't find it on the menu) and the pasta was also soggy. some pieces will just fall apart as you swirled it around your fork. eggplant parmesan was good also overcooked. the eggplant and parmesan melded into some sort of goo. but it was tasty goo! also had the 52$ bison which was good. you only get three pieces of bison which is a bit disappointing but that's fine dining. this dish was well executed and good but again nothing that stood out. nothing unique. what the menu says is literally what you get. polenta bison and rapini. no unique flavours, no unique texture.
the risotto was also undercooked. the rice was crunchy. on the plus side.... i guess that's where i got my want for texture from.

tldr: you can get better executed food for better prices elsewhere.

teatro is probably one of the restaurants that are on my go-to list in calgary. i’ve been here several times in the past, for lunch and for dinner, and it was actually the first “fancy” restaurant i visited when i was still in high school, back in the day when dealfind still existed. i’ve always hadgreatexperiences here, and last night was no exception. our server was kind and polite (i even got a little stool for my bag), the food was delicious, the food came out quickly (so there wasn’t any major waiting in between courses), and it was pretty busy! a huge reason why i like teatro so much, is because of the venue itself, as it is housed in the historic dominion building in downtown calgary. the interior and exterior of the building is gorgeous, and there are high ceilings, an open kitchen, and is very spacious. teatro is located just next to olympic plaza, and so it is nice to take a walk around olympic plaza or stephen ave before or after dinner. during winter, the skating rink is available for use and easily accessible, which is a bonus.

my boyfriend took me to teatro for my birthday dinner. we were seated in a very nice booth spot and the atmosphere was great.

we had the calamari as appetizer and it was delicious. the batter was just perfect andgreatsauce to pair with it. for main, we ordered the daily fish - lingcod and beef tenderloin. the fish wasn't that great, it was a bit dry and i wasn't a big fan of the potato mash pairing. the beef tenderloin was cooked to perfect and was very tender!

service was good overall but our waitress didn't seem to professional for this type of restaurant.

teatro has been open for a numerous of years and their quality remains the same. prime service and anything on the menu is delicious. they have agreatwine list and their cocktails are dangerously delicious. if you're into history and character then you'll appreciate the decor as it was a former bank. if you come, don't forget to ask for a tour of their impressive wine cellar that holds 12,000 bottles!

this is agreatplace for a romantic date. while it is a little on the pricier side, it is worth the money. we managed to get in to this restaurant on a free event which was pretty cool. the food is presented immaculately, and tastes fantastic as well. the service is also on point. you get what you pay for at this restaurant.

from the moment i walked in i knew we would have a special anniversary night. i'm not sure why we waited so long to dine at teatro but now i just can't stop thinking about the meal we enjoyed there.
first i really want to say that this place is gorgeous! it used to be an old bank and there are several architectural features remaining from days gone by, like the large pillars and archways above the bar area. the tables are not set too close together, allowing for a bit of privacy whether you're on your first date or your 19th anniversary... but that kitchen! wow, it's a stunner. there are an italian white marble pass and gorgeous copper fume hood running almost the entire length of the kitchen.
service was excellent from the coat check, to the purse stool provided as well as impeccable timing and personality.
now for the food. i could have just sat there and ate the house bread and olive oil all night. it was that good.
we ordered the beef tartare and caprese salad to start. i thought it was nice that the tartare came preportioned on top of little potato crisps so we didn't have to worry about filling up on more bread. the tomatoes in the caprese were quite nice though i didn't think the micro basil had enough flavour on it's own. maybe add a basil pistou?
for our mains i ordered the dungeness crab risotto and was quite happy with all the chunks of crab involved. i didn't like the dehydrated cauliflower because i'm not really a cauliflower fan at the best of times. hubby ordered the agnolotti al plin and loved every bit of it. the pork ragu was so rich and the preserved egg yolk was a neat way to get that cheese flavour without adding cheese.
since it was a special occasion we decided to order dessert and cappuccinos. hubby had the house specialty tiramisiu which i think is quite popular..i saw more than a few of them being ordered throughout our stay. i went with the rose water creme brulée. i thought it was a reallygreatidea to serve it in such a shallow dish because that way the torching warms up the entire custard. it was delicious!
we have a theatre subscription again this year and i'm hoping we can visit teatro again on one of our theatre evenings.

wonderful choice for a special meal. elegant atmosphere. good service andgreatfood. my scallop entree was a little piece of heaven. rob's beef was melt-in-your-mouth good, he said. the calamari and risotto are always can't-miss good. teatro is still one of our favourite places in town. prices a tad high, but a good place to splurge.

the menu at teatro focuses on traditional italian flavours using regional ingredients. dishes like steak tartare, gnocchi and braised pork shoulder were prepared with a high degree of refinement making the meal as a whole both comforting and upscale all at the same time. our five course gourmet menu started off with carrot and saffron velutatta with watercress and a house cured bresaola with pickled apple and shaved foie gras. the velutatta was a deliciously rich carrot soup perfumed with the aroma of saffron and our favourite of the two starters. the bresaola was delicate and cut paper thin however we found the shaved foie gras did not add much in the way of flavour. blurry due to the 'hangry' shakes  the second courses included one of the best beef tartare's we've ever tasted and a comparatively underwhelming marinated eggplant terrine. the tartare was perhaps the star of the night, tasting of fresh beef chopped with just the right amount of texture. the potato and sunchoke crisps nestled amongst the beef addedgreatcrunch to the dish. we could find no fault with the pasta course. the thyme gnocchi were light and airy and matched well with the earthy wild mushroom bolognese. the sweet pea and pancetta risotto was executed perfectly and struck the right balance between buttery risotto rice, rich bacon and fresh sweet peas. our mains continued the delicious progression of courses. the coho salmon was moist and flavourful and served with a tangy preserved lemo

the bank! not even kidding its in a old bank!. a little pricey but so worth it. romantic and lovely!greatfor an intimate date! service is fantastic and food is superbe and delicate! definitey a place to step outside your comfort zone for favourite dishes and order something different, get a little crazy people, you wont regret it. ordered the bc stergen (fish, i know its not super out of the box but i dont order fish ever because its always terrible) i dont think i have ever had fish that soft, and amazing tasting (fish is suppose to be unseasoned.. who knew. that worried me but i didnt even notice it was that good) it melted in my mouth. i wish i would have written this review right away because i cant remember what it came with but it was crazy yummy nontheless. first time i ever tried duck as well, my husbands dish and it was pretty amazing, strange meat thats for sure, was soft and savory! a fantastic surprise! dessert was beautiful, very filling, apple tarte is a full cooked apple and sweet, something to share, unless your willing to take on the challenge.

wouldnt recommened for a party over 4, its a little too intimate for big parties, just my personal opinion though!
