friday was the second time i visited dominionsquaretavern and before i even got there, i was craving their fish n' chips. from my first visit, i remembered the delicious lightly battered and crispy fish. this time, the fish did not disappoint and i was surprised by how good their french fries were. i cleaned my plate! there literally wasn't a single morsel left on it by the time i was done. so much for eating "light"… oh well! i'll just slip in one more hot yoga class this week i guess. light and crispy batter and tasty dark french fries. with a side of tartar sauce, what more could you ask for? mat had a pork sandwich. when he asked the waiter if it was pulled pork, he said yes but that was b.s. it was good, but no pulled pork, buddy! it was more like a pork roast sandwich with old style mustard. after he readjusted his expectations of his meal, mat said he enjoyed it. plus he had a huge mountain of the same tasty fries as me we were headed to the movies on sainte-catherine (we sa

east side dominionsquaretavern is a popular meeting place young professionals, older professionals, university students and those who work in the downtown area. getting a table during the week during 5 a 7 is nearly impossible - reservations are highly recommended, especially for larger parties. with an affordable menu (super filling and delicious pulled pork sandwich is $16, equally filling but lighter beet salad is $14), a veritable selection of cocktails, wines and beers and a very friendly staff, the vintage atmosphere is unique and fun. i went with a friend on tuesday night for drinks, and the barmen were lovely enough to make us drinks off of the regular menu. sidenote: baldwin's barmacie and the whisky cafe are sister bars to dominion square. the resemblance in terms of attention to decor and ambiance is obvious. jquery(document).ready(function(){ jquery("#gallery-a8b9e203 .flickr-thumb img").flightbox({size_callback: get_sizes}); }); //--> view larger map view larger map

dominionsquaretavern served the best meal i had during my visit in montreal, with a great city centre location to boot. i highly recommend it not only for the food, but for the pleasant atmosphere and beautiful decor (check out the tiles!). i really enjoyed the upmarket pub ambiance, and my favourite part of the meal was the goats cheese stuffed roasted cockerel. it served four of us as a main perfectly, with the succulent meat, generous portions of roasted vegetables served in a sizzling pot full of flavour. you can't go without ordering the bone marrow either! it was massive and the oily bone marrow was delicious. apart from the two outstanding dishes, i really enjoyed everything else we ordered as well. you can't go wrong with this 20s-style pub as prices are great for the quality that you get. it's a restaurant during our trip we won't forget!

the dominionsquaretavern offers a great ambiance and decoration, and the food is very tasty.

but...
in this day and age when more than half the population has food intolerances, allergies or follows specific diets, there needs to be some flexibility with the dishes...
refusing to change the sides of a dish to another one for cost reasons is very disappointing. the prices are not through the roof, but not cheap either. i do not think switching the 'mashed puree with cheddar' to the 'kale and carrot puree' makes such a price difference, and that the waiter should talk down with attitude to me to say no, the chef is very rigid on that when i am asking the question.

i have heard this refusal of changing the sides before once at another restaurant, and the reason mentioned was food paring and taste concerns. if this was the case here too, i can understand, but maybe the customer should just be warned that it might not be the ideal match, and left to decide what they eat.... i am paying for this meal after all, and i would like to choose what i eat.

i will mention that i was offered a choice of a salad to replace the side, but when i go to a high-end restaurant to eat braised beef, i am not looking to eat it sided by a salad... i expect to be offered a full warm meal, and to be treated like my business matters, and that something will be done to make sure that i get something that will make me leave satisfied.

i am the one who suggested to a group of 5 to go to this restaurant. when i am not happy, next time, i might take my friends elsewhere...

customer service and satisfaction should always be a restaurant's number one concern, above even food taste and quality, and ambiance....

so after quite a bit of time going back and forth trying to figure out where to meet up and enjoy some good food my dear son cory (i know he hasn't had much playing time on this blog compared to his brother nikko) recommended the dominionsquaretavern as he has been wanting to go there for bone marrow.  bone marrow?  i was totally in!  boy, that boy has definitely grown in to his mother's son!!  from his early days when he would only eat eggo waffles and cereal, to his teenage years when his idea of being a vegetarian (which he claimed he was) included burgers, hot dogs and chicken nuggets (cuz he just didn't want to eat real meat) to his first year in residence when he realized that to get the $3.99 breakfast deal at the university you had to eat eggs and drink coffee to take advantage of the full meal deal - and that's where it all began to grow.  now he is probably more eclectic and extravagant in his food tastes than me!

march 1, 2015 / by zuuchini / in food , montreal , restaurant review / post comment if someone asks me where to grab a drink in downtown, my immediate response would be “dominionsquaretavern”. with its enriched history and enchanting decor, it is not difficult to comprehend dominionsquaretavern’s charm. recently, my long time wish to dine at dominionsquaretavern was not granted instead a lunch opportunity was presented. with a unique special on every day of the weekday, i fell upon a day in which the special did not pick my curiosity. so, i had some mussels. the mussels were cooked with bacon and cider. they paired nicely with the salty canadian bacon. it was expected that the portion was generous given the steep price for a lunch during work days. the fries that came as a side dish were a nice touch too. a little crunch, yet full on starchy goodness once bitten. dominionsquaretavern, i shall see you again for dinner.   zuuchini share this: facebook twitter email like this: like loading...

since i hadn’t eaten since lunch in preparation for our late dinner reservation, the wi-fi also distracted from my stomach grumblings. while planning this weekend, i had asked a couple of montreal food bloggers for their recommendations. tavernesquaredominion was one that made the cut for being close to the train station, having rave reviews and still serving dinner at 10pm.

fancy a date at a charming 'taverne'? a place to grab a refreshing pimms cup with friends? or what about a sunday roast? thinking you're going to need to take a flight to the uk to experience one of the above? wrong. brought to you by the same group who brings you baldwin's and whisky café, i can assure you that you will find something to love about tavernesquaredominion. the people who frequent this place can't get enough. i am frankly obsessed and would go as far as to call this one of my favourite spots in the city. if this is the first you're hearing of it-  fear not, it's located right in the heart of downtown montreal on metcalfe...so you have no excuse to skip out on this one! if not for the food and cocktails (all crafted with a british-flair), then come for the ambience. there is nothing like it. it is visually stunning and brings you back to the roaring twenties. grab a seat at the bar, or make a reservation for dinner. the dimly lit space is both romantic and fun and if i haven't made it clear enough already-  you need to go. pimms cup (right) what you'll find on the menu: we started with a scotch egg: followed by some 'moules au cidre & bacon': the special was a bavette steak atop a turnip puree (perfection):

yet another bourdain venue during his 24 layover, i'd read much about tavernsquaredominion as a drinking venue but wasn't sure what to expect of the food.  there's a long bar running the length of the dining room, it feels very 1920s that's clearly the vibe they're going for, prohibition speakeasy type thang.  it feels a bit like london's zedel, which makes me very happy. for some reason i have issues arranging these 3 words properly, dominionsquaretavern seems to make much more sense in my head so this is what i call it.  anyway, i don't think people care really, it's called both.  the building harks back to the great depression era, when it was first built and was a hotel, it's been a restaurant since 2009 having gone through various changes in between.  i loved the feel of the place.  they offer a completely british menu, including bangers and mash and a roast on sunday, will definitely be back for that come winter. i had to order the scotch egg ($14) to start, i miss scotch egg

after our terrific experience at tavernesquaredominion, i would certainly recommend it to everyone. the dim (read: flattering) lighting would definitely be the perfect ambience for a romantic date night ;)

looking for an evening out with friends? a great date place? a place to pick up after work? dominionsquaretavern can meet all of those needs– and more! as soon as you walk through the door, you feel like you’ve been transported to a different time and place. the restaurant has many original elements that date back to its original incarnation during the roaring 20′s. if you have a minute, we encourage you to read about it here . finished? our city is so fucking cool. the tavern, which offers “bistro-style dishes with an accessible french canadian palate [...] is also notably infused with a british sensibility.” it it ever! white uniforms, aprons, black vests– lovely! we were a group of 5 last week and as we were celebrating a dear friend’s upcoming nuptials, we weren’t really being budget-conscious. appetizers range in price from $4-$22 and mains from $15-$42. they also have an amazing cocktail list and pretty much anything else you might be looking for (of the alcoholic variety). fo

dominionsquaretavern is one of downtown montreal's greatest additions in the last five years or so. the food and drinks are solid, the vintage decor is unique and the mood is trendy/smart, be it for dinner or drinks at the bar. we've been enough times not to let tonight's misses skew our overall appreciation of the spot.

we wanted something new… and instead we stumbled upon something very old. we entered dominionsquaretavern and were immediately wowed with the spectacle before us. built in 1927 as a hotel tavern, it is reminiscent of a 1920s speakeasy right in the center of the shopping district of downtown montreal. how had we missed this hidden gem nestled below st.catherine on metcalfe?  we opened the thick wooden door, saw the high ceilings with metal chandeliers and tiled walls, and felt transported back in time.

we had been looking forward to spending an evening at dominionsquaretavern for a little while now and we're thrilled to let you know that not only did it live up to all of our expectations but it exceeded them. looking around the restaurant as we followed our waitress we couldn't help but feel as though we had taken a step back in time. surrounded by salvaged finishings that you don't need a very keen eye to tell are made of quality materials you're effortlessly transported to another era.
