disappointing. my husband and i are big fans of indian food. being british, where curry is considered to be a national dish, we've eaten and enjoyed many indian meals. we've lived in savannah for 18 months, but had never tried taste of india, mainly due to a mediocre review from a fellow ex-pat. but as we were in the area tonight, we decided to give it a go.
the menu looked interesting, with a wide selection of entrees and sundries. the reception area was also adorned with a selection of best of savannah certificates hailing toa as the best indianrestaurantfrom 2009 to 2012.
we ordered raita, papadums, and a masala cream cheese stuffed naan, and for our main courses, i went for the chilli paneer and my husband opted for the lamb pailtia. we had at least a 20 minute wait for our food, and in that time we were asked by at least three different staff if our order had been taken yet!
our food smelled promising when we unwrapped it at home, but sadly our enjoyment was purely olfactory. my paneer dish was dry and bland, and my husband's lamb was, in his words, "disgusting", and it disappeared down the waste disposal after a few bites.
even the sundries were below average. the raita had the consistency of milk, rather than rich creamy yoghurt, the naan was undercooked and doughy, even the papadums were less than satisfying.
our takeaway for two was $40, so i expected a lot more than we got. in fact, if we'd eaten in the restaurant, and the quality had been the same, we'd have sent it back.
to summarize, any indianrestaurantthat can't cook lamb, or get flavor into highly spiced dishes is doing something wrong. oh and to clear up the disparity between the food we ate tonight, and it's various accolades, it's only one of two indian restaurants in savannah, so i guess it always has a 50% chance of coming out on top!
if you're looking for something flavorful with a bit of heat, try fire or the king and i. both offer thai rather than indian curries, but deliver on taste.
