**update: the wife and i returned to give this place another shot, this time for brunch. we both chose to do the brunch buffet which included pancakes, biscuits, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, jalapeno & cheese scrambled eggs, and fruit (and maybe some other stuff, i cant remember). we came in with lower expectations than last time and we were pleasantly surprised. the food was very fresh and hot, you could tell they did not let these buffet items sit for very long. although they didnt have to because the pans were cleared out of food within minutes of being served. we have definitely found a cheap brunch spot for those lazy sunday mornings when you dont want to go to a hi-tone brunch spot or spend $30 at a steakhouse brunch. however, i should warn you, we are not the only ones who like their brunch because it gets packed, so definitely be prepared to wait if you get there late. **

the wife and i tried it out for dinner. love the atmosphere and decor. we sat at a table right in front of the big windows next to the street. it was a quiet rainy evening and it was very nice to watch people stroll by as we relaxed. the service was prompt and polite and professional. the food was decent for the price. we started with a pick two appetizer. fried pickles had too much reading for our taste but we also had the black pepper fries and those were amazing. i ordered the chicken fried steak with mac & cheese and mashed potatoes. everything came out fresh and hot. the chicken fried steak was thick and seasoned well. the mac and cheese was creamy. my wife had the chicken tetrazzini and it was dry with little flavor. we didn't order dessert even though the key lime pie looked delicious. i think next time i will try their breakfast. overall it's agoodplace to eat dinner, just don't have very high expectations.

great place with a great atmosphere! everything i've tried on their lunch menu is wonderful, especially the fish tacos with yhe jicama slaw is super tasty as is their soups! the king ranch casserole is a hit as well. been here for breakfast several times and the service is fast. they offer a buffet for breakfast which is nice but i didn't find the flavor to be asgoodon the buffet as i did on the reg menu items. cappuccinos are an absolute must! on friday nights they have live bands come out and the place stays pretty packed so you need to allow time to eat before closing time on the weekends! they have a great outside patio roo that's great for people watching and enjoying the weather when it's nice! i would def recommend this place if you're ever in the area!

this visit and every other visit to spoons cafe has been a pleasant one. we were starving when we arrived and the food really hit the spot. although i would have preferred more deli meat on my club, i though the food wasgoodoverall. the service was commendable and our waitress was very friendly. spoons cafe is always a reliable breakfast and lunch destination for me and my family.

good downtown spot. so, first off, if this place was in a strip center it wouldn't be any good. yet, the food is prettygood(b-fast) and the deserts are top notch with the bakery inside. o/w, it's standard fair. the interior and setting makes this place and with addition to the back room it has improved. you should expect a wait during peak times but it goes fairly quickly.

the patio is nice and is in agoodspot.

repeat business. been eating here for years now. food has always beengoodevery time i go there. service can be a little lacking at times but that's no different anywhere these days. the sweet tea is alwaysgoodunless you get there just before closing. i'd say i almost always get the same thing every time i go there, which is the 'baked spaghetti' and has always been good. it comes with a caesar salad and a piece of toast for $8.95 (drink extra).

many people come late at night or just after eating lunch for a dessert, of which there are plenty to choose from. the chocolate cake can be slightly addictive and i have had many of my family order a full cake multiple times for that very reason.

the location is great, right inside historic downtown mckinney, which is great for a night out with the kids or to bring a date to! on the weekends, spoons will also have live music playing. usually this is just a solo act but there have been duets and even multiple acts following each other in the times i have been there. even in the texas heat, mid-day, sitting outside is bareable under their canopy.

good food, pleasant staff. for breakfast:goodfood, pleasant staff but when the place is hopping the food delivery is very, very slow (35 min wait for eggs and toast) - granted it was labor day, but still. i don't think the coffee is the worst i have ever had but it certainly is the weakest and taste like leftover grounds. worse, my coffee cup had a green "something" stuck on the inside - i did not see it until i drank enough coffee to uncover it. waitress's response - take the cup away and fetch another cup of coffee. i would have called the manager over but, based on the food delivery time, i did not have the time to wait.

charmer on mckinney square. service - 2 stars
food - 3 stars
cuteness and city square factor - 4 stars
really ugly courthouse on the square - 1 star

historic mckinney downtown. really cute, except they could use a better looking courthouse. the are some really great looking courthouses in texas, this isn't one of them.

this place sits on the southwest corner and you should know there are free city lots about a block off the square in almost any direction, because there's not much parking on the street.

nice little place, sat outside under an umbrella at a somewhat rickety table and watched the crowds come and go. this place was packed all morning and into early afternoon. so it was certainly popular and probably doesn't need a review from me to stay in business. however, i intend to have my say, anyway.

my wife just had a scone, they had several flavors available. she said hers. a brown sugar cinnamon, was delicious.($2.50). sometimes they are too dry, but not this one. moist throughout. my wife could have eaten a hundred more. (i'm a little skeptical, 90 maybe, but a 100?)

i had a three-egg western omelet ($7.95) that was very tasty, and came with a few cottage potatoes and a pick-your-bread side of toast. the pan-fried potatoes had agoodflavor and nice seasoning, but i had to catsup them up, nonetheless.

my son had a breakfast taco of eggs and migas inside a large flour tortilla, ($8.99) and thought it a bit spicy. hey, they're migas! they're supposed to by spicy, right?

they are a bakery and had all kinds of cakes and pies and stuff. we had the coconut cream pie $3.25) and the strawberry cake ($4.25). the very large slice of cake was almost too sweet to eat and had lots of frosting. needless to say i loved it! the coconut filling in the pie was awesomely custardly coconutty. wasn't thrilled with the whipped cream topping because it wasn't sweet enough to pair well with the custard. the crust was good, though.

now what keeps this place at a three star instead of four? the service. i really don't think it was the waitresses fault, but they seemed overloaded and we had to wait for more coffee and tea. maybe it was because we were outside. i wanted butter and jelly for my toast, but gave up waiting and ate it dry. same problem for my wife with her scone. can't they bring butter in a little dish or some preserves? if i have to wait to ask for them the stuff, its too late! eggs cool down quickly, you know.

all in all, we liked it and will go back again but hope for more waitresses or will sit inside.
