smokeys bbq

the cool hand luke. first time eating at smokey's.
ribs were meaty and tender.
brisket moisture was perfect and tender.
sausage had just the right amount of spice.
beans were cooked perfect and had a lot of meat mixed in.

it was agreatlunch i will be back!

consistency is the issue. eddie deen has a winner here, and please don't judge this by the former sets of owners. deen makes consistently average, serviceable barbecue in dallas focused on catering, here the issue is inconsistentlygreatbarbecue.

when it's good it ranks with the best. silken brisket sliced thin, with requisite smoke ring and cookie, tender and redolent of smoke. ribs are very good for texas, heavy on the bone and slightly glazed.

sides are all kick ass, including the killer grilled bread and custom buns. beans are laden with sausage and cooked down, slaw is near perfect. i like a finer shred but a lot of folks like this style.

the issue here is consistency. sometimes great, sometimes average. i dig it.

5 days in texas. on a trip all around texas and everywhere we go our group has been treated to meals and many of them have been bbq. by day 5 i was dreading doing bbq (there can be to much of a good thing). so we pulled up to smokey's bbq and was less then excited. i had heard that we were not in the best area and there were 2 police cars in the parking lot. well what they say about what's in the inside is what counts about people the same can be said for smokey's. if i hadn't been told by a local guy i would have drove right by it, but there i was. turns out the police were there by choice to eat and i had one of the best meals i can remember. agreattaste of local flavor all around and the staff made me feel like family. if and when i pass by this way again or even if i have to go out of my way, i will eat at smokey's again! - ps - it was hard to do but it was worth saving a little room for desert! nick kraus - wwp soldier ride
