shady glen

things have changed at shady glen. i've always loved shady glen. i started going there with my parents as a toddler, brought my children and grandchildren but now i'll only go for their ice cream. the cheese burgers that made them famous are gone. the cheese it still great but their meat is now 3 (they say 4) oz before being grilled to death. $5 95 is too much for something to tough to chew. now shadyglenwill be a fond family memory.

shadyglenstill makes their own sodas the old-fashioned way, with flavored syrups and soda water, and amy decides on a vanilla cola. it is sweet and bubbly, and way better than the version coca-cola puts out. chris gets his favorite, a chocolate malt shake, and it is thick and frothy. then comes our plate of shady glen’s famous fried cheese. slices of american cheese are placed in a frying pan with a little pat of butter and cooked until the sides curl up and the cheese is melted in the middle while still slightly browned and crisp. four slices of this delicious cheese are served on a bed of lettuce with a pickle slice. this is the same cheese that comes atop their cheeseburger - more on that later.

stuck in a time warp. doesnt matter which shadyglenyou visit, they are fairly interchangeable.
same menu, same old timey waitress outfits, same weird fried cheese.
did i say weird fried cheese? yah, its like the signature snacking item at this place. you can get it parked on top of some old school prefab burger patty, or you can do what we do and just get the cheese. yes, you can just order that alien, standing up on its own, fried cheese, not fried to the point of crispness, but kinda solidifying, morphing into something not quite of this earth, with a pickle on the side. ( they lost their original cheese vendor once and the populace went bizerk till they found a suitable replacement.) i'll do that with a side of fries and im all set for a half hour. finish off the experience with a maple walnut sundae, mind blowing good, cant say ive ever ordered a maple walnut anything before, but i get it here, cus its really gooey, and creamy and. . . yah get one.

bad burger. i had heard so much about the shadyglencheeseburger that i decided i just had to try it. one of the biggest disappointments ever. the burger was overcooked and tasteless. the cheese tasted just like velveeta. the $1 mcdouble is a much better burger and costs a lot less.

shadyglenfries were terrible frozen french fries. you want fries, go to five guys. best fries going.

service was bad. the waitress almost didn't care that i was there. when i told her it was the worst cheeseburger i ever had, she just shrugged and took it away. i thought she might offer to reduce the bill or offer something to replace the bad burger.

all in all i rated shadyglen2out of 10.

overall experience. been going 2 shadyglen37 years now. atmosphere- ***** politeness/waitstaff- ***** managment- ***** prices-***1/2 (make sure u get platters for best value of $) cleanliness- ****1/2 (some tile floor/ceiling can b replaced) food- a.m. ***1/2 p.m. **** apearance of food-***1/2 am/pm overall -****1/4 stars.2 me th olde style dairy turned restaurant appearance is perfect. no menus, on th wall, allwats. so they have been green since they opened th doors, posably th 1st green restaurant. the icecream and flaves and tast and texture and price is a def 5 star. if u want a leasure meal, kick back enjoy a blast from th past this is where 2 go. and try th new ticket item, th colorado special. it is definatly worth trying once, and second... enjoy

are you kidding me!. we stopped at shadyglentoday on our way home from visiting rosewood cottage in woodstock, ct. my husband and i both agreed we could not recall the last time we had food that bad. his "platter" of whole belly clams consisted of a small portion of overdone whole bellies, what appears to be frozen and bagged krinkle fries(and tastes like them) and slaw. the slaw just bearly made it by as the best part of the meal. i opted for the "lobster roll" per the chalk board menu. i got a "lobster salad" roll with whopping piece of romaine lettuce that took up most of the roll. take $5 off the $12.95 price of that baby and you may get your money's worth on the mayo alone. not to mention the solo 1 inch pickle slice adorning my plate. another $3.95 and i got a side of frozen "krinkle" fries. last but not least our ice cream. with all else lost this was the best part of the meal. bottom line,save yourself $30 bucks when you stop here. nix the food and just get ice cream.

blast from the past!. get the cheeseburger - it comes with a "flying saucer" of cheese & it can't be explained. shadyglenis a no frills kinda place & doesn't take credit cards. great for a casual afternoon lunch & save room for dessert!
