satay brothers

4/5 for satay brothers. here's what i've been able to gather about satay brothers on my own: this restaurant started out as a food stand in the atwater market, one of the city's biggest and best farmers' markets. it was opened by two brothers and people loved their take on singaporean street food. finally they opened their own restaurant only recently in the sud-ouest. in fact, it was voted as the #4 best new restaurant 2013 by cult mtl, which is how i heard about it. i've gotten the impression that the public was very excited about their transition into a real brick and mortar location, but i am also to believe that the atwater stand is also still operational, at least in the summertime. unfortunately for me, i missed all of this hype and simply strolled into the restaurant without all of the excitement and anticipation behind my visit.
the location isn't anything glamorous from the outside and there really isn't a lot else located around this spot. the tip-off that you've found the right place is the red lantern hanging outside above the front door. once inside, you're greeted with a warm and friendly room, bright with red paint and decidedly tropical and asian in it's theme. we were seated at a table for two by the window and began to take in the chalkboard menu on the wall. the selection is small and the prices are quite low - it's also important to note that they only accept cash as payment. while there are only a few key dishes on their menu, the variety is quite impressive, with each dish being completely different from the last.

i got a coco pure ($2.61) to drink which arrived in a can. in my opinion, coconut water is just as refreshing as plain water. you can't go wrong with this sweet and nutty beverage. they also offer other tropical fruit juices such as lychee and passion fruit, which would be equally good choices.

asian food is typically best consumed family-style, so my husband and i selected four of their dishes and were told that we should have enough food for both of us. the food came up after only a short wait and the first to arrive was the laksa lemak ($9.13). beautiful, red-hot and dangerous. laksa is a popular spicy noodle soup in south-east asian culture. lemak style refers to the use of coconut milk in the broth. they also make their own sambal (chili sauce) in-house, which i found very exciting. the soup consisted of a tangle of noodles and bean sprouts with a few garnishes on top including a quail egg. the flavours were hugely spicy and sweet, holding nothing back. certainly the correct bowl to warm you up on a cold winter's day. next time i'd be interested in trying the mee goreng instead, a fried noodle dish.

next was the green papaya salad ($6.09). this was an excellent way to bring some freshness into the meal, and i'd always wanted to try this type of salad. the twirl of long strands of shredded papaya were a lot more vinegary than i'd expected, almost as if it had been pickled. the dish is slightly tangy, with the fruit remaining quite crisp. i enjoyed the crunch of the peanuts as well.

surely we wouldn't visit a restaurant called "satay brothers" and not try the satay. satay du jour ($6.09 for 3). the name of the dish suggests that they offer different takes on satay each day, possibly with different meats and/or marinades. the three skewers of cubed chicken arrived with house-made peanut sauce and some crunchy cucumber. to be honest, i've found satay to be quite boring in the past. but this satay opened my eyes to what it could be when done well. the meat itself was gorgeously tender and expertly seasoned with a caramelized, glaze-like coating. delicious grill flavour was evident and they tasted perfect when coated in peanut sauce. if you need some satay convincing like i did, let the brothers of satay show you the way. ;)

lastly, we had the steamed pork buns ($6.96 for 2). this was a bit of a funny coincidence for us because we had just been listening to a podcast where the hosts were talking about how much they love pork buns, and were remarking that we'd never tried them. i sure am glad that we've been let in on this delicious secret! you'll often see these buns enclosing the meat completely, almost more like a dumpling, whereas these ones were served a little bit more like a taco. instead of the meat being shredded up inside, this was a gloriously saucy and savoury slab of pork, cushioned inside a pillowy-light bun and alive with asian flavour. so simple and certainly street food, yet so impossibly delicious. these are a must-try.

i would still love to visit their stand at atwater to compare any differences, but this singaporean food was huge on flavours, low on price and boldly exciting. they already seem to have a vast amount of loyal followers and will surely continue to do well.

delish and authentic. it's not chinese, it's not thai so if people expect to have americanized teriyaki chicken with disgusting general tao chicken it's not for you.
yes it's a bit of a wait but i think it's worth it. i happen to live very close so i pass by often and i enjoy the casual but friendly service. there isn't going to be a waiter up your ass asking if everything is alright every 5 minutes- if thats what you want go somewhere else. the menu has constant items like satay and mee goreng and they also have weekly menu items that change. these guys use local ingredients and are very knowledgeable and proud in the food they make. try it!

did i like it? no, i loved it!! pork buns are simply the best, great satay with the perfect sauce, very tasty laksa lemak. i will certainly come back many times here. it reminded me the delicious food i eat when i travel in asia. it might be far from mile end, plateau but as the people next to us were saying "it's worth taking a cab to have lunch here" :)

great date spot. i walk by this little gem everyday and never thought to try it out. i decide to go in today and see what all the hype was about. on the outside it looks very inconspicuous but as soon as you step in, the charming ambiance and the different oriental fragrances take over your sense. although its very small (and i hear theres often a long line up), the friendly staff and the delicious food make it an instant favorite. we had the vapour buns, the laksa, the chicken skews, the papaye salad and the coconut rice desert. everything was delicious. however, the food is very spicy, so sensitive stomachs beware!!
10/10 would recommand.

overhyped!!. i've been to satay brothers a few times, and i have travelled all over south east asia extensively just to eat the food over there.
satay brothers is way overrated.
the food is nothing like what you find in south east asia, especially what you find in singapore and or malaysia. it's flavourless compared to what you find in asia.
the best thing on the menu are the satay skewers.
the papaya salad is just ok and that's not cool for such an important menu item.
oh yeah ... the owner and some of the rest of the staff are a-holes.

average taste, kind of pricey. very busy on a sunday at atwater market. cashier was very charming but when it came down to being served, i waited 20 minutes before the cashier noticed me and handed over my order that was starting to go cold. server actually argued with me about calling my name '3 times really loud' when i was anxious waiting to hear my name being called not 10 feet away from that spot...will not be going back.

yes, it took me three visits before i get to eat at satay brothers. first time, it was during spring before they moved back to the market, full house. second time, everything was sold out. and i told myself, if my third visit can’t make it, i will totally give up! but yay, that didn’t happen! one thing i dislike about satay brothers is their attitude “i’m all that”. i felt like i should feel so fortunate to taste their food. if i walked away, they wouldn’t care at all. anyways, service could be ignored if food was fantastically and absurdly delicious. but… the famous satay. we had beef. my comments? taste like ordinary brochette with a layered glaze that was tasteless. the sauce that came with it did not add any bunch either. i was there clueless and wondering what is the line up all about? another thing. i found it a bit pricey 6$ for 3 satay. papaya salad. this one i loved! very addictive because i have a soft spot for fresh dishes. and this salad is exactly that. i loved how they we

while the food here is usually very good, today's laksa lacked some pizzaz. the broth was good but needed a burst of lime juice or some acidic flavor. i counted 1.5 shrimps, come on guys - lets not be stingy. and the pork puffs were stale. it was still good but could have been boomtastic.

très satisfaite de ma première expérience dans cet incontournable du marché atwater. j’y retournerai cet été et, dès l’automne, je ferai un tour au restaurant rue saint-jacques. la cuisine singapourienne, aussi savoureuse que son paysage.

not impressed. not sure what the hype is all about. they served me a sloppy sandwich with chicken that tasted like fish. furthermore the service sucks, not sure who these guys think they are. i waited 15 min in line while the server blatantly took the orders of select cute girls both in front and behind me. once i placed my order, i had to wait 30 minuted to get my measly sandwich. i get that these guys are hot right now, and i'm happy for them but they can't let it get to their heads.
