good food, horrible service. the iowa roll is delicious, and also really pretty to look at.. but every single time i have been there the service has been bad. very slow, they never come back to your table to see if you need anything.

some different things.... they had the usual sushi plus some interesting specialty rolls. the owner, tim, was really friendly. he could probably talk all day about his restaurant, but it was nice because he had real pride for fish and sushi.

had the best 'live' oysters ever at samurai!

samurai is relatively new to des moines, located near the jordan creek mall. the dining area is two separate spaces - a sushi/bar area and a hibachi grill area. for those of you not familiar with habachi i suggest you watch "a benihana christmas"...wait f

samurai sushi and hibachi. overall, i really enjoyed samurai hibachi and i thought the food was great. there were two different chefs who would come around to everyone's table and make the food in front of you, which is a change from most restaurants. once they got started, the food was prepared pretty quickly and i would definitely come back in the future. i would recommend almost anyone to this restaurant because the menu is fairly simple, but still enough options to choose a great dish. the building did not appear that big at first and was a little difficult to find, but once you go inside it seems way bigger than it did from the outside. they mainly serve sushi and at the hibachi they serve meat or vegetables with your choice of noodles or rice. they had some different drinks like cranberry juice, but also had regular drinks we see in most restaurants. there wasn't any music playing in the hibachi part, but there was pretty low lighting and minimal decorations. this demonstrates their culture we have been studying because it is pretty laid back and simple and the chefs do need to concentrate! i really liked this restaurant and i would definitely come back again soon.

went into tonight, there were three of us and we planed on drinking order sushi to split and maybe a hibachi dinner. the server who sat us was extremely rude from the get go, not friendly and barely said two words to us. my friend unfortunately misplaced his id so he just ordered ice tea. after the sever came back with the drinks he found his id and ordered a beer. the server looked at us and just smiled smugly. he brought back the beer and then requested my friend take a drink in front of him. of course this seemed suspicious so he refused. he then accused my friends id of not being his (we're in our late twenties). he claimed that if the cops walked in it would no longer be his fault, which technically is not the case... but i digress. we approached the manager, and he was apathetic. the whole while the server begins talking back and the hostess is laughing at us. we planned on spending $100+ and we always tip well. unfortunately i didn't get to even finish my martini... i will never return and i highly suggest they hire quality staff with customer service focus. i wish i could say the food was good at the very least but i never even got the chance.

great. my father took my husband and our 3 year old and myself out to eat here. he eats at the one in davenport frequently and knows the owners. we had a wonderful experience. the hibatchi grill was awesome and our son loved it! the waiters were pleasant. we will come again soon!

unhappy experience. i was a regular customer of samurai sushi, i even knew the owners when they owned a restaurant back in davenport. i went in tonight with my family and ordered their "crab crunch roll". i was rather surprised to find my entire roll was deep fried with a batter on the outside of the roll. i was very disapponted and ended up not eating it. i later suggested to our waiter that the owner clarify in their menu that is was indeed deep fried. i further requested for the roll to be removed from my bill which was over $100 (the roll was $8)

the waiter went and asked for it to be removed from our bill, only to return explaining to me that in the menu it has an asterisk on it, which means that it is "cooked". i agreed, it was a crab roll, i expected it to be cooked, just not fried. the waiter went back to the owner again, only to return stating he was unable to deduct that roll from our bill. the owner never came to our table to talk to me, even though i have been a customer of theirs for 8 years if you include the time in davenport. sadly, tonight was my last visit to their restaurant. i do not like my sushi to be deep fried, would have never ordered it had i known it was deep fried.

there are far too many sushi places in west des moines/des moines area to be treated the way we were. i ended up paying for something i would not eat. further, their sushi has never been great, nor their service. i usually only went their because i knew them back in davenport and tried to be a regular patron for them. my loyalty ment nothing to them, so i shall take my business and loyalty elsewhere.

hibachi isn't ever terrible, but this one has to be the worst. as mentioned, i don't know that i have ever had "terrible" hibachi. most places are consistent with the steak/chicken/fried rice ordeal. however, i've got to say this one seems to be the worst one i've had for some reason. i'll also make mention that the service isn't always the best out of the three or four times that i have been. i won't go back on my own dime, only if someone else is footing the bill.

the sushi has gone down hill. when samurai sushi opened up i remember it being great. however lately the quality of the nigiri has started to go down hill. the specialty rolls (aka amercanized stuff) is still good and i can't comment on the habachi as i've always only come for the sushi.

esthtically it's pretty much your typical middle range sushi place in a strip mall, but on the nice side of town and a short walk to the jordan creek towncenter if you wanted to go to the mall or stop by during the summer for the free concerts at the towncenter.

poor service. i have eaten at samurai several times and the food is always good. however, the service is very slow and staff can be unfriendly. with all the other options in town, i will not be going back here.
