i ventured to this quaint place due to the intrigue of the mirliton soup. i ordered a large mirliton soup, a small potato soup, and navy beans and rice with chicken tenders. the mirliton soup tasted gritty like broccoli and cheese put through a food processor. there wereshrimpin the soup as well. i did not like it at all. i looked up the mirliton and it is a vegetable related to the gourd family like a squash and cucumber. so, this may be why i didnt agree with the soup i dont like any of those veggies. the star of the show was the potato soup! it was sooooooooooo good it made you want to slap your mama! the chicken tender were fried properly but there was no flavor in the breading or the actual chicken. the white beans and rice were on point. i would like to try the ray ray sandwich, so i might come back here.

greatshrimppoor boy's but costly for the price .. greatshrimppoor boy's but i tell you now you can't be poor if your going to order ashrimppoor boy or oyster poor boy because it's going to cost you around 17 dollars just to get it dress / oyster lol close to 19 dollars extreme prices , i've gone to sammy's for many years i've watch it change along with the prices , after katrina they repair in a timely manner after that the prices went out the roof and that's because they were to only one's open in that area , all poor boy's are 6.99 for 4 inch and average 9 dollars for the 10 inch before being dress , even a ham and cheese will run you 11 dollars after being dress why " i don't know , also the pickles are mainly cucumbers and the lettuce is romaine that kills the sandwich for me, i prefer shredded ice burg lettuce and regular pickles like a real poor boy don't make my poor boy's fancy , ' are the poor boy's good " hell yeah they are " , the wait be prepared for a wait to order and also for them to make the sandwich , a good 35 on up , there is always a line so if your in a hurry good luck there's always a lunch crowd , so if your going to get a medium fountain drink fry's and a poor boy you better bring more than 20 dollars this is why i only eat there once in a while, but i do enjoy it .

i went in and purchased ashrimppoboy and a stuff bellpepper. i waited almost 30 mins for my bellpepper to come up to the window while my poboy sat on the corner becoming cold, fine. my order is finally up, i thank the cashier and go home. i get home open my food and my french bread is extremely hard, i bite into the sandwich it's now cold and taste like nothing but cheap hot sauce. i open the container for the stuff bellpepper, it's loaded with only ground meat, which throw me for a loop because it's should be called stuff ground meat pepper. the pepper was disgusting and the flavor was terrible. i pack everything up and goes back to the restaurant. i walked up to the counter and a lady asked me what's wrong, not how may i help you but what's wrong. i stated i would like my money back, she asked why, i said its nasty. she looks at me and with the nastiest and a rude attitude proceeds to tell me "it's not nasty you just don't care for it." i'm shocked because i am the customer. she turns and say what's was wrong with it, i simply replied hey you know my taste buds i didn't care for it, wasn't that what you just told me. as the cashier gives me my money back i asked is that the owner, she states yes. i will never return to this establishment and when my out of town family return we always eat at sammys, never again. i may expect rudeness from an employee but never from the owner. not one time did she act professional, nor did she apologize for my inconvenience or my experience. thanks but no thanks

better than it has to be!. this place is definitely in my nola top 10. everything's great here. fresh and homemade. i never pass up the mirliton seafood soup or the okra andshrimpstew both of which are full of fresh seafood and very rich. i always get the mustard greens which are pleasantly bitter and full of lean smoked pork. the only side i don't like are the carrots which are those weird baby carrots in a slimy sugar sauce. deserts are diner style but better -- sometimes with homemade strawberry sauce. if you go during lunch rush you have to wait in line but it's always an amazing slice of new orleans, more varied and integrated than just about any place in town. and if you go after 2pm you can have the place almost to yourself. (note to sammy's you make my blood boil by your refusal to serve free water -- if you were not as good as you are i'd boycott you for this reason.)

the only bad thing about this place is the line, but after you try it you will understand why there is a line. theshrimpin the po-boy have a unique batter that is excellent. the special's and soups are great. don't dress up and if you only have time for fast food don't even attempt it.

hidden jewel. somewhere you would not expect to get quality food. great po-boys and burgers, however, go for the daily specials. better crawfish monica than you can get at jazz fest. as good of stuffedshrimpas anywhere in town. fried chicken cooked to order. don't go in if your in a hurry the service is slow, but friendly.

better than it looks. in hood, but clean and pleasantly appointed if soulless. decent parking, but crowded. good gumbo. stuffed fried jumboshrimpfor lunch ($11 w/ 2 sides) are good, but rich. i could only eat 3 of the 5. fries are perfect: thick, hearty, slightly crispy, lightly seasoned. cornbread dressing side is small but brilliant and savory, with bits of turkey in it.
