when we visited red gravy, we left the extremely long and blistering hot line at jimmy j's. redgravygreeted us with no wait, however the wait for our food once sat was over thirty minutes. the mimosas and almost everything else was overpriced. $91 for brunch for two? no thank you. the meatballs are what they are known for and they were definitely the best part. the grits were some of the best too but our omelette, breakfast potatoes and breakfast sandwich were certainly nothing special, especially for the ticket price. we wouldn't return for breakfast. dinner might be worth checking out since that is more of what they're known for and the meatballs were so good. keep in mind when ordering them that they are huge! i will say that our service was great!

i ate at redgravyat the recommendation of a friend. well, after the meal, she would not recommend it again. the waitress was rude and abrupt. she gave us little time to order, and seemed uninterested in explaining menu items. this is the type of service that i have come to expect in restaurants such as this that charge a 20% gratuity on parties of five or more. the food was cold, bland, and overpriced. the meatballs that they feature were full of gristle. we had to ask for salt and pepper shakers, and they apparently had just one set for the whole restaurant, because they shortly took them to another table. there are far too many really good restaurants in new orleans to waste time at red gravy.

deliciously amazing food, we heartily enjoyed it! it was a bit pricey and the wait was a bit long, but the service was attentive and friendly. they had great tea, and the redgravyand bolognese was just perfect. handmade, and definitely could tell the difference!

this small 'italiany' restaurant was highly vaunted in the local travel media as an outstanding brunch destination, while not being an old standard. the location of redgravywas certainly convenient, being across camp st. from the sheraton & across canal from the fq. there were trendy & eclectic lighting & decor throughout, but the comfort of the seating was diminished by the close proximity of the tables to one another. too close for my comfort anyway.
for a late am brunch i wasn't feeling any of the heavier pasta entrees, tho these seemed to make up about half the one page menu. i chose the sicilian egg pie, a meatless entree well designed & presented in a medium sized ramekin. it was good but nothing more than that. the service was accurate, but the eggs were a bit long in arriving. not a bad choice depending on what you're hungry for, but be prepared for the traditional new orleans a la carte brunch to add up quickly if you're very hungry, here & at many other venues.

redgravyis just a quick walk off of canal street and nestled between larger businesses. but don't let red gravy's small size deceive you - inside you will find everything fro

after reading some of the negative comments and then reading the owners thoughtful and measured responses i told my wife we have to eat at redgravyto support this business owner.
we own a busy retail store and we know the challenges of such an endeavor.

we were greeted by roe herself and seated. she took time to visit with us despite how busy they were. the owner is driven by a passion for delivering the best food and service possible. doing this in a small space only makes her job harder. would you rather eat in an empty restaurant with lots of room or in a restaurant jammed with people. i'll take the busy restaurant as a sign of great success. honestly, if "technically it was a few minutes late in opening" and that just ruins your day you don't belong here.

we started with irish coffees which were incredibly good and we listened as roe patiently explained to the bar staff exactly how to prepare them. she does this because she cares.

we had a meatball &gravyfor an app and both were superb. we can understand the title of best italian.

my wife had sicilian egg bake, eggs in a puff pastry that were impeccably cooked and presented. i had the down shore, an italian sausage omelette covered with gravy. very delicious.

we both had grits and i have no idea how they make theirs but it was no surprise that they would be the best grits i have ever had and i live for grits.

it's so refreshing to see an owner take that much pride in her business. roe has the courage of her convictions and she does whatever it takes to put it all out there everyday.

god bless & carry on!

been twice now. after the first time we swore never to go back. we were nickel and dimed for dinner: charged for each sprite my 11yo step daughter drank (small glass too!), had terrible muscles and were charged even though i sent back, and worst of all was charged for extra redgravywhen my mom asked for some due to her pasta being too dry. terrible experience!

then we went back again with extreme trepidation on their third anniversary for brunch. completely different experience! service was wonderful and we were even treated to free cake. maybe this was due to their 3yr anniv, so i may change my like rating after a third visit.

now for the food. hands down the best redgravyi've ever eaten. after our first bad experience, we all agreed that the food was outstanding but we hated the business practice. lasagna is incredible! for brunch, the meatball and fried egg sandwich was great. i really do love the food here.

i really hope the first experience was a fluke due to bad server and not the normal practice. fingers crossed

food was fine, very disappointing service. i've worked in several restaurants and i understand the challenges these small business face.

when we arrived, there was almost no one in redgravycafe and they seated us right next to another couple. i was surprised - didn't see the need to crowd customers.

we ordered from the regular breakfast menu and asked to leave out onions, "oh, there are no substitutions, and the vegetables are already mixed." ok, again, no one in the restaurant, but i'll accept that.

then i asked for the waffle with strawberries and blueberries (as listed on the menu). "oh, we don't have strawberries and blueberries. it's whatever we have - peaches and apples, or mangoes, whatever we have..." it took everything i had not to say, "i'm sorry, no substitutions."

the food was fine - nothing wrong with it, but nothing special. it's obvious that everything is pre-prepared.

i wish i could recommend this restaurant, but cannot.

who has heard of italian food for breakfast in new orleans? not me? i’m usually a chicory coffee and beignet girl myself but i could not ignore the raves about this new restaurant in new orleans. i tend not to venture too closer to the quarter just because parking can be a headache, but this place was well worth it. when we walked in we had our first choice in tables, it wasn’t until after we ordered our food and was chatting when another customer came up to us and asked us to move to a table in the back so that they could push 2 tables together for their group. i told him that i was there to photograph the food and we had purposefully selected a table by the window for ambient lighting reasons. they hovered around our table, with mean looks from the guy’s wife, until we agreed to move. geez! meatball since this place is known for their meatballs and redgravy(marinara sauce). the meatballs were ok (they’re massive! ordering 1 each almos

redgravyis a small place, and only a couple tables were seated when we walked in. that didn't last long; people started wandering in right behind us. inside redgravyis whimsical and fabulous. there are bright colors and touches of a fantastically flamboyant personality on the tables, walls, even hanging from the ceiling. it was nice to see such bright colors in such a small space. everything was bright, even the plates and mugs. we sat ourselves in the center of the raised area, going for the table with the liveliest flower. our server was super nice and patient with us, explaining specials and making suggestions.

couldnt get pass the poor customer service. on feb 11 i was in that party of 8 and i was disgusted at the lack of professionalism from the owner and her general lack of regard for common courtesy. as mentioned in a previous post our party came in, placed our order, enjoyed each other's company and then was asked to leave. the details are spelled out in another post, i want to hit on the owner. if you had any ounce of common courtesy, professionalism, tact, or shred of decency you would have come to our tables to address the alleged issues you had with our party. instead you opted to stand with your staff by our table and talk about us.... what are we in middle school, going to just stand in the corner and talk about the people in your restaurant? well it was obvious that one member in our party could hear you and i do believe he approached you privately about his concern... you in turn loud talked him and disrupted the entire restaurant. your offer for us to leave, your comment of not getting water on your floor, your assumption that we were not going to pay your wait staff were all insulting. your complete lack of regard for the others in your dining room demonstrated your ignorance and you comments once you opened your mouth confirmed your ignorance.

thanks for covering the bill....we should have however done a collection for you so that you could take some classes and educate yourself on business etiquette, human relations, customer service.

nola has a lot to offer-- we were in heaven-- thanks for the reality check--- unfortunately we had to deal with whatever your issues were that day---not to worry-- huck finn's found us simply delightful and they enjoyed a big tip!!!!

since you were sooo concerned about us tipping you here are some tips

1- don't tell your customers when there is a torrential down poor outside not to get your floor wet-- ( well at least don't just tell the customers of color)

2- stop referencing your restaurant as having sections... or at least narrow it down to 2 -- the balcony and the floor--your not that big-- it is kind of funny

3- stop intimidating your staff

4- have some self respect and maybe you will begin to respect others.

the word about the redgravyis out---you can't fix this--- even if you wanted to -- you can t give us a free lunch or dinner like you did the other unsatisfied customers, you can't give us a discount-- you've done all you need to do for us-- you have made us as committed as ever to take a stand and let others no to avoid the abuse they can get from red gravy!!!!!

the worst dining experience. this was the single worst experience we had during any of our visits to new orleans. we were looking for a place near our hotel for breakfast and was recommended a cafe near the red gravy. interesting they did not recommend the red gravy.....hmmmmm..... this other place was packed with a waiting list so we thought we would try the redgravybecause they had tables available. we were greeted well but things went downhill from there. we knew we were in trouble when we sat there for 20 minutes after which the waitress finally gave us our coffee and took our order. you need to know they will not substitute sausage for bacon. a relatively simple request you would think. then it took over 40 minutes to get our order. we were not pleased when two other tables received their orders before us. the waitress obviously told the owner/chef because she came out and the first words she said in an unfriendly tone not appropriate to a paying customer was "do you have a problem here?" we were appaulled. her attitude is not typical of the good business practice from any restaurant/cafe owners. she made unacceptable excuses.....too busy....not a fast food place....said it took 25 minutes to cook the biscuits.....any other place would have informed you that it would take longer because they had to make more biscuits and given you the option to change your order. it was a lie because the biscuits were cold! so be warned you will be treated rudely. we were an elderly group and to be spoken to in such a disrespectful manner was totally beyond our scope of acceptance for a simple breakfast experience. when we walked out the door another group looking for breakfast asked how it was. we had to tell them the truth that it was the worst place for service and treatment. they originally thought we were kidding and we told them we were not so they walked on. i am glad others had good experience at this place. we were by no means difficult customers and completely understand the reviews from others who complained about the rudeness and inappropriate behavior. our mistake was not checking the reviews beforehand. there may be a response to this review with more excuses, however, there is no excuse for bad business practice. they may have this attitude in new jersey but if she wants to be successful she had better go back to school and learn people skills and better business sense.
