2.5 out of 5 stars, best: seafood cooked perfectly, clean and trendy outside seating area, worst: service. heavily staffed, but weren't greet at the hostess stand, no one else was waiting, we were then left standing while the 2 staff had a lengthy and casual conversation about seating. shown to our table and before we could even sit down she said "i think this table is already sat." and took us to another table, handed us menus and said it was the *first day of a new menu. we took our time reading the menu and had made our entire selection, chatted, observed the layout and still no server. i had to get up to get one. she asked for our drink order, but we gave her our drink orders and i continued with our app and dinner orders as we had waited so long. server was stumbling to catch up, but did, wrote it down. order came out wrong. we both confirmed we had clearly stated the order, replaced without too much trouble.
calamari was very large rings, onion-ring sized, but perfectly cooked as were a grilled and fried shrimp and fried oyster dinner. sauce was limited to one; sundried pesto cream, which was good, but it would have been nice to have more options. there was no cocktail sauce, only a "yum" sauce which is probably catalina dressing, mayo and some spice flecks, it is good, but a little too sweet. the new menu may have been the culprit, but no apologies were offered and we didn't point out that the "wilted spinach salad and sticky rice" were neither wilted nor sticky, but plain, baby spinach laid under 2 larger scoops of mushy, cold rice. a small drizzle of the cream sauce was on one of the balls of rice. the 1/2 & 1/2 basket was 3 oysters and 3 shrimp and about 6 lbs of french fries which were either perfect or cold, indicating they had mixed a previous basket and not kept at temp. a request for cocktail sauce was denied, and further yum sauce was brought out.
the sun dropped, we moved to the fire pit because our server was, again, nowhere to be seen, and when she found us we asked her to split the tab down the middle. it took her 2 tries, but she did it. i admit that was a bit of a push, i truly was seeing if they had that capability, but when we signed the checks, she never returned to pick them up. we literally stayed at the fire pit, met 2 other groups of guests, chatted about the area, gave them tips for other restaurants to try and the server never picked up our check. we handed it to the hostess as we left, along with a comment card.
i would go back one more time, but if it is the same next week, i'll mark it down as a tourist one-off spot because it does have a great outdoor seating, slightly better than/trendier/newer than flounders and not for a regular dining experience. **second visit, service was good! food was still perfectly cooked.**
*disclaimer: i have worked front and back of house, i know a new, or expanded menu, can lead to some mistakes, but how they are handled is the true measure of a restaurant.
