papa turney's old fashion bbq

bbq with live music overlooking a boat dock. can't go wrong. the pulledporkwas good, but the small upstairs restaurant with old photos lining the walls made it welcoming if not somehow familiar. the cole slaw is sweet and the macaroni baked. i felt like family.

tonight i had a strong urge to eat chicken wings. i considered a chain but really prefer local shops. i remembered this place was really close to me and the reviews were good so i thought i would give it a try. it's out of the way which in my book is a plus. it's a colorful oasis at the end of a long dark drive at a marina. nice. the place is small with dueces and longer communal tables. there was a band setting up and since i value my hearing i decided to place a to go order. smoked wings were 86ed along with a few more items. bummer. so back to basics. pulledporkplate with macaroni and cheese and coleslaw. nine bucks and change. the service was pretty fast and pleasant. the meat had a good flavor with a bit of char and hardly any fat. for a dinner plate it was still moist considering the meat was probably pulled earlier that day. coleslaw was nice and sweet. a little watery by good. the mac & cheese was so good though, i saved it for last. it had crispy parts like a baked dish and a really strong cheese flavor. overall, a good meal.

excellent bbq! beautiful setting at the marina. pulledporkwas wonderfully tender and nuicy and perfectly smoked. came on a sunday evening, nice music.

what's not to love about papa t's?! no matter what you get you can bet it's going to be awesome. my personal fave is the brisket. no fat on it. it's chopped to perfection. you don't really even need sauce. theporkis amazing too. if papa is there you can be the will come to your table and personally thank you for coming in. when you walk in there is a sign hanging that says 'welcome family' and that's exactly what you can expect to be treated like when you visit here. my fiancé and i plan on using papa t's to cater our wedding next fall!! if you want amazing bbq, homemade sides, and dessert. this place is definitely worth every penny you will spend!!!

good bbq and great owners. i had heard about this place for quite a while before i finally got the chance to try it. the owner was working the register when we came in - very friendly guy and quick to answer questions or offer suggestions. anywhere but tx,porkbutt is my bbq meat of choice so that's what i ordered here. it was very good with a nice, smokey flavor. there wasn't a whole lot of bark and the meat was a little overdone for my tastes but i would place it solidly in the category of "good bbq".

the sides were even better than the bbq. the greens were really meaty and smokey and the mac n cheese was some of the richest and creamiest i've had. almost all bbq places i visit on a regular basis have good and bad days. maybe today was just one of those days where theporkgot a little overdone. and, really, it's just a nit-pick . .theporkwas really delicious. i will definitely be back again to try some more.

once we got to nashville i had a serious craving for bbq so we went to top rated papa turney’s in hermitage. these guys started out as a food truck but now they have two brick and mortar stores. the bbq was off-the-hook good. the ribs were tender, pulled off the bone and melted in my mouth. the pulledporkwas equally good and kim really liked their smoked chicken. i will admit that this was a first for her because she doesn’t typically like smoked meat. some barbeque just knocks you over with smoke or the meat rub but the amount of smoke flavor/smell was just right. add their spicy barbeque sauce to the mix (oh yeah, nothing was drenched in sauce which was a plus!) and we were both cleaning off the plate. we read reviews about their smoked cabbage and thought there was no way that it could be any good, but we were wrong again. it was tender and tasted like it was marinated in a perfect minestrone soup broth.

the biggest jewel of nashville.. i want to begin by saying that i am not a barbecue fan. i had a friend who found this place on urban spoon and wanted to try it. he is a big barbecue connoisseur who travels all over the country to eat barbecue. as soon as we got done eating, he looked at me and said this was by far the best barbecue he has ever eaten.

i like it if it is good but i don't ever crave it like he does..... as soon as we walked in, we were greeted by everybody in the kitchen just like we were life-long friends. he got the rib plate and i got the pulledporksandwhich. i scarfed mine down in a flash and he shared me some of his ribs and it truly blew my mind how delicious their food was. you can tell so much love and care was put into making this food, just like the food you would eat at your grandparents as a child. we even ate some of mama zeke's pies which are totally out of this world.

mike and his wife really have something so special going on here. i have never been in a restaurant where i feel so welcomed by the staff. you can really tell they love what they do and they really do know their barbecue. since then, i've been back once a week with my husband and now they all yell out our names with smiles when we walk in the door. we will continue to come here as long as they are open for business and i will continue to brag about them.

please do yourself a favor and drive to eat at this sweet family's amazing restaurant. you will not regret the drive or the money you spend whatsoever.

best pulled pork....ever!. best pulledporki have had! can't wait to go back and try the chicken and smoked bologna sandwich!!! very friendly and helpful staff. glad they are in my neighborhood!

local treasure for great barbeque. tried papa turney's for the first time today. the choppedporkwas "melt in your mouth" tender. i've eaten a lot of barbeque in my life, and this is the real deal. can't wait to try theporkribs and beef brisket. what also sets this place off is the folks who run it. truly friendly and really seemed glad i was there. a family business and it shows.

amazing food only surpassed by the people!. met at the door by the owner mike turney, he quickly welcomed my wife and i in and introduced us to his son and nephew who were working behind the counter. never have i experienced such hospitality at an establishment. the folks running this place are extremely genuine and it wasn't long before my wife and i felt right at home.

i ordered the dry rub rib plate and my wife had the pulledporksandwich. the portions were large and very generous. my wife was pleasantly full and i was stuffed by the end of our meals. the ribs were absolutely amazing. i grabbed a bone to pull a rib out and all that came back was the bone! the meat was seriously falling off of the bone and the flavor was so rich and smoky.

i've always heard about great barbeque, and i thought i had had it a time or two. it wasn't until today that i realized i've never had great barbeque at all. this is food cooked with some serious time and love. if you love barbecue and you're in the nashville area, do yourself a favor and try papa turney's. you won't regret it!
