very french, very good. two of us tried our crepes for lunch yesterday, and both of us enjoyed it immensely. the portions were smallish, and the preparation somewhat understated - both very french, we agreed. americans might be used to more food on the plate and more embellishment on the food, but it turned out to be just the right portion for lunch, and excellent food.
i had the la forestiere, chicken with mushrooms and onions, topped with whipped cream. the crepe is enorrmous, but of course very thin, and folded into a flat square the size of the plate. it looks deceptively small, and the filling appeared drier than i expected (my american propensity for saucy food, i guess) but it wasn't dry at all, and it was very tasty. the whipped cream was a smallish blob, and it melted quickly so that it was more garnish than ingredient.
my boss got the quebec, which would have been my choice as well if she hadn't ordered first, and it too was excellent. smoked salmon, sour cream and chives, with the same little whipped cream plop, and a nice fresh lemon wedge. i will order that next time, for sure, and would really like it if they could throw in some capers.
the menu says the crepes include a small salad, and we expected some greens on the plate, perhaps. what we got was the shredded carrot salad from the menu and while i was slightly taken aback, it was very good and i would get it on purpose again. it had a slightly nutty flavor, perhaps walnut oil in the dressing. i also got the nutella ice cream, which was very nice.
the atmosphere is interesting - an old schlotzky's not extensively remodeled. you wait in line to order, then get your drink, seat yourself and they bring the food. i didn't count, but i'd say it wouldn't seat more than 30, and it was about half full toward the end of lunchtime. there are a number of two-tops and some four-tops, and a high bar table or two as well. we sat right up against the glass window, but even as hot as it's been there was no discomfort. everyone there, including the owner who took our order, was veryfriendlyand attentive. i hope they will include the ability to add a tip to the credit card, as i tend not to carry much cash. i will definitely eat there again and recommend it to my friends - even though i am widely known as a non-fan of french restaurants.
