disappointing sushi. had vegetarian ramen which had a nice assortment of veg in some mediocre soup.

their bc rolls were a disappointment. only a sliver of salmon skin but with rice and cucumber to make it a decent size.

bad ramen. i heard that the owners of nomiya is a chinese family. and the head chef is japanese but only in charge of everything except the ramen noodles. i've been to nomiya a few times now and to tell you the truth i enjoyed everything except the ramen noodles. the appetizers are great, some different dishes, never had it in edmonton before. the sushi is okay, little more on the fusion side then authentic. ramen, not something i would pay money for. i'm a japanese/chinese so i know what ramen tastes like but this place is more like chinese noodle place. bottom line: chinese shouldn't try making japanese ramen.

it's alright. if you're going in and expecting good quality at least vancouver quality then turn away. of you've eaten the good stuff before, this is going to taste not good to you. not very many choices, the shoyu and shio tasted the same. and worst of all, the ramen was not hot, one of the most horrible things ever when you want to eat a big bowl of noodles and the soup is not piping hot.

delicious ramen!. fantastic, fantastic broth. the spicy ramen is amazing.
it was a small, busy restaurant, and we had to wait about 15 minutes for our table, but it was well worth the wait. it is rare to find a ramen shop this good in this part of the world. they also have a great selection of other tasty japanese foods (including japanese curry which i'm so excited to go back and have next time). i've been searching for good, authentic ramen in this area since my husband moved home after living in tokyo a few years ago.

as far as portion sizes go, one bowl of was quite filling for one person. it would have been too much for me if we had ordered appetizers and then the ramen. i would have liked to have had more than just pork in the bowl, because i'm not a big fan of pork, but, it was delicious either way. well worth the $10.00 for the spicy ramen.
also, the service we had was great. they were really busy but in the hour and a bit we were there we had several different servers check in with us to see if we needed anything and if we liked our meals. the servers were helpful in providing recommendations and were very friendly.
bottom line: go and eat there!!

bustling restuarant fizzles out. honestly, i've never had ramen noodles in my life before. going in i didnt' know what to expect, perhaps plesantly surprised? however, the ramen noodles tasted just like instant noodles! seriously, whats all the hype about? the maki was unique however, unlike ones i've tried at other restaurants. and the other appetizers were pretty good too.

major disappointment. first off, the service was awful. they forgot our food order and then gave our next order to another table. after approaching the staff to ask about whether or not our order was still coming, we finally got our meal.
i have had ramen in japan and in vancouver so i have something to compare it to. this ramen tastes like..... instant noodles. actually, i think my instant noodles have tasted better than nomiya's. i ordered the spicy miso. the soup broth was very plain. the ramen noodles like i said tasted like instant noodles. the meat was overcooked and tasteless. i did enjoy the sunrise roll though.
after my first experience with this place... i decided to give them another try. this time i ordered the shio? soup. once again, the broth did not have much flavour. the noodles tasted like the instant noodle noodles... again.
service was ok. the sushi chefs were very nice. the servers seem to be flustered and lacking organization. maybe with more time and experience they will improve.
i definitely will not be going back to this place though. i was disappointed both times.
someone needs to open a good ramen restaurant in edmonton. please :)

very disappointed!. i went to nomiya for lunch with my two young boys as i understood it was a family friendly restaurant. being japanese i was looking forward to my meal since good ramen is hard to find in edmonton. also, i was watching for presentation, within the restaurant and the food, as well as service because that is what can make or break an authentic (or close to) japanese dining experience.
when we walked in, we were asked to wait even though there were a few tables open. i also asked for a highchair. while we were waiting, i took a moment to look around at the surroundings. the establishment looked clean (if you don't look at the floor) but a little crowded with 3 or 4 (strained looking) servers running about. there were small, red (bathroom?) tiles along a couple of walls which took away from the rest of the, passable as japanese, restaurant. we were seated at a booth and given a booster seat. there was nothing to strap the seat to so my 20 month old sat precariously at the table. the table looked like it had been wiped but did not look cleaned. there was confusion as to which waiter was going to serve us. we waited 8 minutes (timed) to receive a menu and a waiter came to take our order less than 2 minutes later (not enough time to look at the menu when trying to settle your children). the waiting staff seemed inexperienced and unorganized.
we ordered a pot of tea, shoyu ramen, chicken kara-age, and tendon (tempura rice bowl). i also asked for a child friendly bowl and fork for my younger son. a waitress asked if i wanted a glass bowl or a plastic bowl. (do you really need to ask?) she came back with a small but deep bowl and a very large fork...
the genmai tea came in a lovely looking pot meant for black tea. too much tea leaves had been added and the tea was strong when it arrived. of course, as the pot sat throughout the meal, it became even stronger and therefore too bitter to drink.
the kara-age came first. there were 5 medium pieces in a large square wooden bowl. it came with a sliver of lemon and a touch of parsley. the bowl itself was beautiful but the contrast of brown fried chicken in a brown oversized bowl with a touch of colour was not too appealing. the dipping sauce that the menu spoke of was nowhere to be seen. the chicken was flavourful and juicy, perfectly fried.
next came the shoyu ramen. the bowl itself was (too) heavy, thick and shallow. the soup was black with a thick layer of oil on top and there was chashu (flavoured pork slices), a few strands of green onion, same amount of young bamboo, and half a dozen floating corn niblets. (nothing like what the menu describes.) when i stirred the soup the bottom half of the noodles were a semi-solid lump. the noodles were a little too hard and the soup was very flavourful but too salty. the soup sppon/ladel was nice to look at but not practical to use. the soup was not hot as it should be, so much so that i didn't have to cool the food for my youngest.
the tendon came a few minutes after the ramen. the tempura and rice already had sweet sauce on it but for some reason it came with a small bowl of tempura tare (dipping sauce). the bowl was very simple and did not add or take away from the presentation. the tempura was light and crispy. there was more rice than topping but the sauce was flavourful enough to compensate.
my youngest was very frustrated by this time, trying to balance on the seat without falling off and trying to dig his food out of the bowl with a too large fork.
the bill came shortly after and when i flashed my debit card, the waitress came immediately. she asked how much i wanted to leave as tip (!?) then punched in the total amount including tip into the debit machine (!?!?) i canceled the transaction - because tip should be entered separately. another waiter came and told me the transaction did not go through. i explained to the waiter what happened and he corrected it. after paying for the meal we got a strong impression they wanted us out of there as there were people waiting to be seated at the entrance.
we left with full stomachs but were thoroughly dissatisfied. the kara-age was good, the tendon decent, but the ramen undesirable. the experience was not worth the $30 and i will not be going back anytime soon. i would recommend you go to a different restaurant for authentic japanese food even if they don't have ramen.

i was really, really looking forward to sanpachi opening since first reading about it over on foodosophy . for whatever reason, the construction seemed rather slow and even after checking on the site in the middle of february, the building was soon opened and re-branded as nomiya -tapas sushi ramen . wondering if edmonton's first real crack at ramen would be lost in the new venture, i decided to wait a few weeks before attempting a visit. so even though it was a bit earlier than originally planned, sarah and i headed over to nomiya to meet with the captain and bp when our first option was closed. the small, clean space was relatively empty when we walked in, which meant we had our choice of tables. taking a spot along the wall, across from the kitchen, we scanned through the diverse menu. and diverse it was, with everything from ramen, to creamy new-wave sushi, to skewers of various meats. as our pot of tea and glasses of water arrived, we slowly

hit or miss. tan tan ramen is quite good, no veggies in it tho which really made it full of pork and spice flavor, pretty good though if you like noodle soups. 5/10 for how filling it was

had some spicy tuna sushi and the portions were tiny, the rolls were mainly rice and although the filling as tasty the whole dish was way overpriced. 1/10 for how filling it was

the chicken karaage was the highlight of the meal, pounded out chicken with a slight breading and some sauce for dipping, a nice light snack. 2/10 for how filling it was.

the vegetable ramen was alright, very subtle flavours almost boredering on tasteless, but the mushroom flavour did come through because of this. lacked flavour and substance. 1/10 for how filling it was

overall: 5/10 - slightly overpriced ramen, that is tasty (tan tan) noodles seemed under cooked and too hard, flavorless...mite buy ramen again, not very filling though
sushi was tasty but rip off.
chicken karaage is quite good and definately will have this again.

my first impression about nomiya is very positive. the decor is very nice, new, and the color scheme is quite relaxing. the place is quite small (sit about 30 people or so). i got there are 7pm on tuesday night and the place was still packed. luckily my friends were

i had it today and it wasn't the best at all. the smell and the look was there but it tasted dull and with out a punch. the noodle was hard but not the good way and won't hold the soup taste, the noodle doesn't taste any special. over all if you go here don't get the noodle go somewhere els like calgart

-----27 mar, 2011-----

i lived in japan for 7 years and we drive for 1 hour to eat good ramen, sorry but this is not one i would drive to the south side for. i would drive to calgary and still do to eat ramen there. the smell and look is ramen but the taste is just not enough, it needs more after taste and a punch, which is just not there. i would still go back for the yakitori menu but i don't recommend the ramen at all.

love!!!!. this is my first review!! i love this place! i travel to and fro vancouver a lot and i have ramen every time i'm there, i've also been to japan three times and had ramen *every day* while i was there.
i can't believe this place has less than great reviews... i've gone a few times already with friends and the service was a little slow but they were really friendly... the ramen tastes really authentic and the guy told me it's because they brought over japanese cooks
i've ordered the shoyu (??) and shio (???) and they are so good. i'm not sure whether shio or shoyu is the miso-sauce one--- but i love the other one. i haven't even ordered my own miso ramen yet because i keep ordering the one i like a lot lol.
really recommend going to try it out.. and their location is really good (for me anyways) they're like beside beijing beijing?

there were a lot of confusions to what happened to ramen sanpachi that was supposed to open earlier this year. it turned out that sanpachi had pulled out and was replaced by nomiya sushi & ramen instead. there were also high hopes from ramen-deprived edmontonians that, perhaps, this place would be the first to offer authentic japanese ramen in the city. my edmonton correspondent had informed me of their experience at nomiya this passed weekend. the prices for ramen all range to about $10, a little bit higher than in vancouver. the portion is a fair size. the noodles used seemed to be instant rather than house-made, along with several slices of chasu pork, boiled egg and bean sprouts. overall, it definitely was ramen. shio ramen for those who have never tried ramen before, the selections at nomiya are not bad tasting. however, those that have tasted the ramen in vancouver would find that the edmonton location is still far from being comparable. starting with the shio ramen, while the in

horrible!. so i've had ramen from a few places before so i have something to compare to. first of all when you look at the pictures in the menu, they look huge with a lot of ingredients in it. when my bowl of ramen came there was next to no ingredients in it other than the meat. it looked like they took out half the vegetables that was supposed to be in it. the ramen was not fresh at all, tasted like instant noodles which i could make at home myself. overall for the price of 10.00 for a bowl of ramen here is not worth it. though the flavour of the soup was good.

ordered some chop chop rolls as well. it was more rice than anything, it was like i was at tokyo express where they pack in the rice and give you little to no little chop chop in the middle of the roll. was tasteless.

will never come back here again, just wanted to try it for the sake of it being new and all... there are better places for sushi

go for the ramen.... i'll give then a few weeks to sort out the issues they have between the wait staff and the kitchen. from the bar, we can see 8 people working in the kitchen yet very little food coming out. the only thing that was being churned out at record speeds were the sushi and 'tapas' the ramen took forever and the waiter kept trying to bring us the wrong order.

overall, the taste of the ramen is very good. the sushi, not so much.
