nomiya: tapas sushi and ramen

went to this ramen joint with a couple of my friends, my friends ordered the tan tan, spicy miso, shio and shoyu ramen, i myself got the seafood ramen. we also ordered the black dragon and dragon roll. my personal opinion about this place is that it’s one of the better (not the best) ramen place edmonton has to offer.

lets start off with the rolls, it was a little disappointing to me as the first touch from my chopsticks the rolls fell apart, it was very difficult to pick the pieces up. after the struggle of bringing a piece to my plate, the taste was alright, the black sesame sauce on the black dragon wasn’t too strong, which gave it a great touch. onto the ramen, the broth was a little salty for my seafood ramen, and the shrimp that came with the ramen still had the shell attached (personally i would rather it came without the shell, mostly because i’m lazy and don’t like peeling shrimp) which made it difficult to not make things messy. other than those two things, the ramen was pretty good, the noodles were very al dente, and the portions were enough to keep your tummy happy.

overall i would give this place a 3/5, i for sure will go back when i’m craving ramen, well...at least until i find a better place for ramen anyways.

good food, but weird after-effects.. i came here yesterday for a late lunch with a bunch of friends, and to be honest, i had a great time. the food was delicious, it came out on time and the waiter was very nice and hilariously sassy. but since last night and this morning i've been feeling super gross and bloaty, and i'm pretty sure it's from the food they served. i had tonkotsu ramen & one of the mini dons and they tasted amazing!
just not sure why it gave me pretty bad reaction afterwards. my advice is, make sure you have a strong stomach before you eat here, you never know what effect it could give you.

nomiya offers thoughtful and solid japanese food and ramen that should do for anyone in the craving for such. while the quality of their fish was a little suspect, they do supply a tasty ramen and made it up with an authentic take on century tofu. you will not find fine japanese food here but rather will find average japanese cuisine at a good value.

come here for ramen!. one of the few ramen shops in edmonton, it's delicious especially on a cold winter day to warm you up! i typically get shio ramen or the seafood ramen.

delish ramen. the sushi at nomiya is great but there are loads of sushi places in edmonton. if you go to nomiya, try the ramen! it is full of flavour and very satisfying. the service was friendly and super fast.

you know what's great about edmonton? it's always cold. and you know what that means? yes, you've guessed it! it's always ramen weather. when i was told nomiya was the best place for ramen in edmonton, i just knew i had to go and see for myself! the outside doesn't look like much, but it was it was packed with people slurping up bowls and bowls of steaming hot ramen. i couldn't wait for my turn to get my hands on a bowl. but first, some fried chicken. chicken karaage ($6.95): these tender pieces of lean chicken are deep fried till golden and is served with a wedge of lemon. they were incredibly crisp evident from the loud 'crunch' when everyone at the table simultaneously bit into the chicken yet still very juicy and moist inside. it would have been absolutely perfect with a tiny dollop of kewpie mayonnaise but it was still a solid start to the meal. now for the ramen. shoyu ramen ($10.50): a soya flavoured ramen, this is one of our lightest soups. complete with marinated egg, this ramen is tangy, salty and savoury.  the shoyu ramen is light soy based broth loaded with sweet bamboo shoots, shallots, fish cakes, squidgy egg, tender fatty roast pork, crunchy wood-ear mushrooms, corn and a sheet of toasted nori. the broth is flavoursome, noticeably clearer and tasted extremely light. oh, if you like a little heat, generously sprinkle some shichimi into that broth for that extra kick. for those who aren't into collagen rich soups, this is perfect for you! but for those who are, feast your eyes on this next ramen. tonkotsu ($11.50): the heart of all our ramen! the many hours of simmering makes this ramen hearty and milky smooth.

craving ramen ?. this is the best ramen place that edmonton has to offer. of course it's not comparable to the ones i tried in vancouver but it's decent. i ordered the shio ramen, my favourite kind of ramen that i always get. the broth was creamy and rich and quite tasty, it wasn't salty or bland. the noodles were a bit too undercooked for my liking, if they were cooked a bit longer it would have been perfect. i was surprised that this ramen came with egg and corn, at other places i would have to pay extra to have these ingredients added to my ramen. it also came with slices of pork which was okay, but not as tender. i also tried the tonkotsu broth, it was a bit too sour for me. if you are looking for some decent ramen, i would recommend this place.

this place is not bad for what it is. do not expect this place to be like kyoto, mikado or japonais bistro. ordered dragon roll, chicken kara-age, and tonkotsu ramen. all dishes were presented well. the roll and ramen dishes were not bad. the kara-age on other hand, not so good.

nomiya seems to be the go-to place for ramen in edmonton since it's pretty rare here. seriously, can we get some more ramen restaurants around the city?! along with ramen, nomiya also offers sushi and tapas.

this place is a hidden gem! the staff is superb. the food is really really really good! they also have happy hour when you get to pay for a full meal that's like half the original price! this is gonna be on my list of go-to-restos in edmonton.

bad experience started from the door. firstly i have to say the restaurant looks clean and well maintained. first impressions are very important & my first impression was very positive. but unfortunately it was all downhill from there.
the service was ok, i was greeted pleasantly at the entrance but because i wanted to order a take away, i was left to stand and wait by the door for a while, even after it was blatantly obvious that i had perused & browse the menu to it entirety. the waitress even having the odacity to serve and sit 3 gentlemen who had walked in a considerable few minutes after me, while leaving me to stand there for a while longer. 2/10 for the service.
i proceeded to enquire some more detail about my impending choices on the menu and was just treated as though i was an idiot and had no idea about that type of cuisine. by then they had already soured my first nomiya experience.
i kept my cool, ordered my food and just left (no tip of course) after it came. but the final kick in the teeth was yet to unfold when i got home.. i was greeted with some kind of bad attempt at sushi rolls that flaked as soon as a chopstick touched them. needless to say, i won't be going back there again. better japanese cuisine can be had from edo (which in itself is not great either).
you might have better luck, but i won't be braving nomiya again. once was enough.

i have been to this place twice so far. the first time i came at lunch with my boyfriend and i ordered the make your own bento with saba - which was delicious, soba - which was awful and tasteless, could barely taste the ponzu, and the california roll which was amazing. the salad was decent and the miso was nothing special. my boyfriend had the katsu curry which we both really enjoyed however we both felt like they could have used way less rice and more carrots and potatoes. despite all that we decided to give it another try but during the dinner time. to our surprise when we came in they had an amazing happy hour menu that i was especially pleased with. we ordered the yam fries which were so amazing. the gyoza which was not bad. we also ordered the ramen which was disappointing as the noodles were undercooked and had absolutely no flavoring and were hard to chew. the service here was also mediocre as our ramen came last after a man received his before us even though we had ordered before him. and the server didn't really refill our waters. i don't believe i will be returning any time soon as i was disappointed by the food.

trying new things. i got the miso ramen but it was good and savory. my boyfriend didn't really enjoy the bento box though. the tempura batter was too thick and the chicken karage was a bit dry.
