it was my first time to waiheke island and i was definitely very impressed with mudbrick vineyard & restaurant. this was one of very first winery/dining experiences that offered fine dining and i was very happy with the service, quality and presentation of the meals and the stunning views that surrounded the estate.
the first dish on offer was their complimentary bread. it was amazing, it was freshly baked, and the cream and oil tasted wonderful together. the wonton chip was interesting and added a unique taste and texture with the other surrounding flavours.
my first entree from my selection of the 3 course a la carte, however, was brought out much faster than expected. i was in the middle of eating my bread, and the bread was very filling, when my oysters were brought out. it would have been nice to have a rest of 25-30 minutes in between just allow for proper digestion before the next dish arrived. i did mention this to the waitress, who was super lovely i think she said she was from belgium, had a lovely sounding french accent, and she was more than happy to accommodate this and check in with me for the remainder of 2 my courses :).
the oysters were incredibly tasty and super fresh and creamy, the vinaigrette with the thinly sliced onions were superb and together with the freshly squeezed lemon made it spectacular and a divine treat. this was definitely my favourite!
i had about an hours rest before moving on to the next portion of my a la carte.
the next complimentary dish was their raspberry sorbet with their house wine. this was very refreshing and cleansing for the palate.
the second choice of my a la carte was the long line caught fish of the day. this happened to be their snapper so i was excited as i haven’t had snapper in a long time. the presentation was nice, and had some really great textures and colours however the sushi inspired spring roll wrapped prawn threw me off a little, it was crunchy and great but i’m not a fan of deep fried foods, so it would have been nice to have an amazingly cooked fresh prawn with a nice tartare sauce and lemon on the side. the snapper was a little over cooked but the sauce was a nice consistency, however, a little bit salty for my liking.
the third and last course, which i requested for another hours wait, was the clevedon buffalo cheesecake. i was super impressed with the presentation, although i had initially thought it would be a slice of an actual cheesecake, but the portion size was just enough as it was rich and packed in flavour, as well as crumbly and creamy with the different textures and elements. the aesthetics of the dish looked really nice, but i wasn’t a huge fan of the beetroot, much rather for someone who has an acquired taste to enjoy the dish as a whole.
overall i was certainly impressed with the lovely and relaxing atmosphere, to the lovely wait staff, who were very patient with me. they were also quite attentive considering it was a really windy day to help set up the shade umbrellas for their patrons, and still give full table service and attend to our needs. the presentation of my dishes were immaculate and the food was very much enjoyable. i would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone who is looking for a relaxed, and sophisticated dining experience in new zealand. i also don’t consume alcohol but bought the mudbrick pinot gris as a gift, which i tasted and thought waas heavenly. it would have been a perfect match with my very tasty oysters :). a very romantic setting, i would love to comebackagain!
