worst first experience ever. it took them 57minutes to bring our food to us, when the food got to the table the baked beans and the mac and cheese was cold, my ribs were burnt and our waiter was not professional at all. i do not recommend this place,i wouldn't even feed it to my dog. if you are looking for agreatbbq spot i recommend shack in the back the food is way better, it's is also cheaper and the staff are very polite.

great location andgreatfood. i wish there was a 4.5 option like there used to be on urban spoon... cool bar downstairs and nice seating upstairs. food is predictable. :)

on my first visit i tried the brisket, pulled pork and wings. all was wonderful and with the right taste. i don't claim to know who has the best bbq, but i can say i've had some of the best. momma's would fall into that category. brian, was agreatserver and all-around can-do person while i was there. very friendly and professional. if i owned a business i would want him to be on-board. momma's isn't the most coziest of bbq restaurants concerning atmosphere, but the food is spot on.

we stopped at momma's for the first time while traveling through louisville. we heard about momma's on food network's diners, drive ins, and dives. somegreatoptions to choose from. normally i would have tried their smoked meat by the pound or huge beef ribs. however, i wanted to try a few of their options. so, my wife and i got three sliders (pork, brisket, and chicken), an order of their fried pickles, a side of cheesy corn, and i added four wings. every thing was great.
their meat is all dry rubbed and smoked. the pork, chicken, and brisket were perfect. this was my first time tasting smoked wings, and it won't be my last! the fried pickles (which were made using sweet pickles) were great, and i hate pickles.
we will be stopping back at momma's on our way back through louisville!

i stopped by for a quick carry-out order, so i can't speak on the actual dining experience. the environment was very relaxed. almost a little too casual. several employees were cursing and talking loudly about politics, which was a little off putting.

the food itself was excellent. the sides were definitely hit or miss(aside from the fried pickles, which are the i have ever had), as tends to be the standard with bbq places. the meat was obviously the main focus. it wasgreatand the portions were huge for the price.

reallygreatbbq and awesome wings. the only disappointment was the service. i understand if someone is busy but our server didn't check on us once after delivering our meal, not to inquire about refills or to see if we needed anything else. nice but a bit negligent is the best way to describe the service side which at times was hard to notice because of thegreatfood.

louisville has manygreatbbq joints in town. momma a does a good job of standing out in the pack but feast smoke town and fabd still hold the collective titles. the brisket is top notch with lots of flavor. the ribs were disappointing as they were to dry for my taste. that being said i've been there several times and the service is great. the bbq is really good and this place is certainly worth a visit. oh and the beer menu isgreatlots of local options so that's a win.

atmosphere was typical of a barbeque place and was nice. the service wasgreatand the staff very friendly. the price was average. the food was mixed. my friend had 1/2 chicken, fries, and slaw. the chicken was moist and had a good smokey flavor. the fries were really good with a seasoning on them. neither of us cared for the slaw. it was a vinegar base and we both prefer ours sweeter and creamy; it was neither. i had a pulled pork slider, brisket slider, baked beans, and potato salad. the pulled pork was good. it was already sauced (not how i'm used to it since i'm from alabama) but it was smokey, moist, and i liked the sauce. the brisket was disappointing. i love brisket but it was too dry for my taste. the baked beans were good but i added some bbq sauce at the table for extra flavor. the potato salad was not for me. it was mustard based and i like that but it was missing something, possibly sweet pickles or relish. we also had a order of wings as an appetizer, and they stole the show!!!! they were hands down, the best wings i have ever eaten. they appeared to be smoked with a dry rub (?) and then fried. they were perfect. they were crispy, smokey, and yet tender and juicy. i sauced them a little because i really liked the two sauces at the table but they did not need sauce. if i was a tad bit underwhelmed by other items, i was overwhelmed by the wings. the pickles and mustard were also good. i will definitely go back to this place, but next time it's strictly wings, fries, baked beans, and sweet tea (which was good as well).

loved it hated it!. the first time i went to mama's i went with my co-worker for lunch. we had agreattime. the food was fantastic and the service was very good. our waitress took care to explain the choices and guided us to the right choices for our tastes. plus the pickles and mustard were terrific and we loved it all. about a month later my husband and i were looking for a dinner spot and i suggested mama's bbq to him. he hated the sticky concrete floors. it's a little annoying to have your shoes stick to the floor. we wanted to order the burnt ends and our waitress said they were not available. she suggested another option. my husband ordered it and we had to send it back. i stuck with the grilled cheese and it was very good. my husband didn't like the potato salad. the potatoes were crunchy. i ordered the bread pudding. it might have been good but it was noticably microwaved. it had very cold and very hot spots. i wouldn't recommend it. it might be good right out of the oven though. our waitress was helter skelter. she didn't refill our drinks or check on us at all but hung out at the bar. people came and went that got there after us. we had to ask for our bill and she never came back to cash us out so my husband had to go to the bar cash register to cash out. when she finally came back i asked her about the pickles and she said oh i forgot them. hum. i am pretty sure we won't be going back to the hurstbourne location. location is questionable too for a family style restaurant. i give it three months. adios mama's.

get there as fast as you can!. i just let this place on a food high - totally legit.
the bbq is slow smoked and spice rubbed. the sauce is deliciously balanced and complements the meat. i had the pork bbq ribs - falling off the bone!!! and i chewed on the bones... for the crunchy bits on the end because that was all that was left. the smokiness completely goes through to the bone - it's fantastic. the mac & cheese was deliciously creamy and rich and the baked beans tasted like my grandmas. no lie. i don't lie about food.
great location and charming venue. love the bar! knowledgable staff and super friendly and courteous!greatbeer list - the country boy cougar bait was fresh and crisp and left plenty of room for the fabulous food!
do not stop - do not pass go - get there as soon as you can. this is not a drill!
oh yea - pickles are fantastic too!

kansas style bbq - delicious. location:

my wife and i visited momma's the other week around 8. easy to find location as it's in between lexington rd and frankfort ave. when you walk up you'll see two doors, one to the left goes to the bar and the one upstairs opens to the main dining room.

food:

earlier we received a recommendation from the owner to try the wings or ribs. sadly, they were super busy earlier and ran out of wings (though i suppose that's good for them...plus i ended up getting wings later as you'll see). i ended up getting the half-chicken which was less than 10 bucks. it was so big i couldn't finish it (rare for me) and had the rest for lunch the next day. my wife had the smoked sausage.

first off, the flavor combinations are near perfect. there are sweet pickles and spicy ones. the way they taste matched with the bbq is hard to explain, but man it's good. the mustard they make in house, like the pickles, tastes a bit like stone ground mustard but better.

the skin on the chicken was crispy and delectable. the chicken itself had an ever so slight smoky flavor. it wasn't juicy, but it also wasn't dry at all. i really liked the balance and found each bite of chicken better than the first. again, mixed with the mustard, pickles, and those seasoned fries...it was hard for me to choose what to eat next, as i wanted each flavor in my mouth at the same time. the slaw was spicy, something unique i've never experienced before but enjoyed.

my wife's smoked sausage came with bread to make a sandwich if so desired. she loves mustard and pickles. my wife typically does not like bbq, but she couldn't rave about this enough. the sausage was very flavorful, smoky, and had the perfect meaty kick to it. she and i both had mac and cheese as sides, which had just the right amount of cheese...creamy, but not like cheese goop you get at some places.

and let's not forget the sauces. their bbq sauce lends a tangy, mouth watering sensation to the bbq. now, thegreatpart was that the sauce was not necessary, as it is with many bbq places which have dried meats. the "hot" bbq sauce wasn't too hot, though it had a good blend of spiciness which made it "hotter" than the regular sauce.

and lastly, we were able to meet chad, the owner. fun, friendly guy who noticed i didn't get the wings i had come for. it was quite a bit later in the night by the time we were done, so i'm guessing they had picked up more wings. he insisted we try them and special ordered them for us. they were piping hot, so we gave our thanks and ate them at home (about 12-15 minutes away).

back at home they were still hot, and oh my goodness were they delicious. i don't know how but they dry rub these wings with some sort of pepper/salt/sugar combo (probably completely wrong on the ingredients but that's how it tasted). when you bite into the wings you get that earthy smoky flavor you've always desired in bbq plus super juicy meat. so, somehow dry meets spicy and sweet plus smoky and juicy. i don't get it, but it happened. and again, my wife doesn't usually favor bbq, and she doesn't like wings, but she thought the taste was too good to pass up. looking forward to trying those wings again.

have eaten here twice-very pleased with portion sizes.first visit had the pork sandwich with mashed potatoes and coleslaw-all excellent-potatoes were a bit dry.a very good value at 8.00 including the sides.service was good-informal-which was fine.second visit today-had 1/2 rack of pork ribs with greenbeans and mashed potatoes-again the potatoes were a bit dry.the ribs were very tasty-they are a bit charry on the outside-but that is characteristic to the style of bbq-the meat was wonderful and moist-only complaint would be that the sides did not come with the ribs as did with the sandwich-but this leaves it up to you if you want to order larger sides.ribs with 2 sides came to $16.00- the sides being the small order-worth the price-reccommend going.also took home 2 pork sliders-good portion as well.the pickles and mustard were really good too and housemade-overall agreatmeal and will be back.
