a respite of bbq comfort food. we rescued a friend from sitting bedside in st. vincent's hospital icu and took him to mojo no. 4 for some comfort food and fellowship. just down st. johns avenue in avondale, you get a whiff of the tasty bbq as you approach the restaurant. this was our first visit and we were pleasantly surprised with the atmosphere and the grub. we started off with mojo's famous onion rings appetizer at $8. the portion size was large, in fact, the waiter thought they might've shorted us a few rings so a manager brought us out a few more. wow! the rings are double breaded and served with a buttermilk ranch dressing. one in our party ordered the mojo smokehouse chicken ($15.00) with cheese grits. the grilled chicken breast was topped with mojo bbq sauce, sauteed onions, bacon, cheddar and jack cheeses. he said it was really good. it was served with jalapeno cornbread, which was different and delicious. my hubs had a bbq reuben ($9.50) which was brisket, slaw, jack cheese and 1000 island. he loved it. i tried the buttermilk fried chicken ($14). they gave me two large breasts of chicken (one to eat and one to take home) with mashed potatoes, all topped with cream gravy. i'm not normally a cream gravy girl as it's usually too starchy but this was light and delicious. our guest ordered a pulled chicken jumbo bbq sandwich ($9). he enjoyed it. a surprise for all of us was that mojo no. 4 serves cheerwine, a cherry soda from the carolinas ($2.59 a glass with refills.) the only side that got mixed reviews was the baked beans. two among us didn't care for them. i thought they had a strong flavor of ketchup, and were different, but i'm a bean lover so i enjoyed them. we had an awesome waiter, jaron, who made our experience all the better, suggesting patron favorites, refilling drinks and offering menu suggestions.
