meigas cafe-try something new every time!. meigas cafe in ballarat is a must for everyone visiting ballarat who likes to try interesting, genuine and fabulous european fare with a rustic edge to it. jose and yamelly have created a warm, friendly, comfortable environment in this cosy cafe off the mall. there is always something new on the menu to try and jose clearly takes great delight in watching his customers' reactions to any new dish he trials.

the best thing about meigas' food is that is always made up of the freshest ingredients, which are usually locally produced (you can see, smell and taste how fresh they are)..... so even the simplest dishes are full of authentic flavours, colours and aromas. jose has a talent for making foods that you might normally not try very easy to enjoy, such as kangaroo, crocodile, black/white pudding or octopus. of course, there are plenty of more 'traditional' dishes including tortillas, chorizo, tapasand the incredible seafood paella..... or even just a sandwich! they're all good,

since i discovered this little cafe a few months ago, my partner and i have become regulars. the food is brilliant, the specials board always has something new to try, jose and yamelly always welcome us by name and spend time explaining the menu (including how to eat different dishes) and in terms of the prices, servings are generous and extremely good value for money!

for us, meigas is an easy choice when we feel like a satisfying meal, good company and a genuine, down-to-earth, easy dining experience. we're even prepared to drive an hour from melbourne to eat there!

if you're looking for an authentic, traditional, interesting and satisfying spanish food experience, you really need to give it a go. unless you just want manufactured french fries. then you should go somewhere else.

this is probably one of the best spanish food we have ever had! we had the garlic prawns, sautéed mushroom, fried eggplants and fried calamari from thetapasmenu, as well as a paella for 2 to share among the 4 of us. the ingredients are fresh (especially the seafood!), flavors are authentic and vibrant! staffs and chefs are very friendly and welcoming, we even had extra treats from the chef! we will definitely come back in the future!

extremely well decorated, great vibes. staff are lovely. food is nice, so much bread! olive oil is to die for. oysters are amazing!tapasstyle, great for large groups. if you're there you have to try the "feed me" options. they cater to special dietary requirements well.

food poisoning. went there for my birthday and had their prawn tapas. i noted the prawns weren’t fully cooked, but didn’t think anything of it at the time. well, time passed and i found myself hurling chunks of what was tastytapasinto my girlfriend’s toilet at midnight. food tasted great, but it certainly wasn’t worth the ultimate price paid. such a disappointment.

one night in ballarat and were recommended this place. weren't disappointed everything was genuine spanish and the place was buzzing on a tuesday night. went with a selection of smalltapasto share, white anchovies were gr8 l, small cheese plate included a reasonable manchego and the sauted mushrooms substantial. the calimari was a bit oily for crumbed but overall decor, service and food would get us back.

good service, average food

i went for lunch at meigas last month. the restaurant atmosphere and decorations is amazing. i ordered 4 differenttapasstyle for lunch but sadly their food was just ok. everything cook to perfection but there is no wow factor and a little lack of seasoning.

what a lovelytapasrestaurant in ballarat! we almost missed this place after visiting it's old address if it wasn't for the new address pasted on the window!

we came just for thetapason a thursday night and the place was busy with a nice buzz. the decor inside are is tastefully decorated with exposed plasters, old pictures and meat hanging above the bar resemblingtapasbars in spain. i liked the bar and the bench by the window which is great for a lingering drink or some spanish desert.

the waiters were friendly and kept checking up on us throughout the night to ensure we were looked after.

we ordered 6tapasbetween the two of us and it was enough. the highlight for me are the octopus which was lightly grilled and delicious with the accompanied sauce, the slice beef tongue with the cream cheese was absolutely mouth watering, the potato crochet had mash monkfish inside. the rest were great including the slice chorizo, spanish meatball and the lightly fried slice egg plant. only comment there is the sauce drizzle on the egg plant was a bit thick.

all in all a great find in this town and we will be back!

all in all, our meal at cafe meigas was really enjoyable. they were very accommodating in terms of their flexibility in serving thingstapasstyle rather than full-sized entrees, and the food itself was really well done. without knowing ballarat very well, i wouldn’t be surprised if it was one of the best restaurants in the area!

a wonderful spanish experience. we read good reviews about this place but could only get in at 4pm for dinner as they had a private function in the evening. we had visited spain in the previous year and went to a cooking class to learn how to maketapaspaella and sangria. we never got around to making it because it was quite involved. we allowed the chef to bring out a small selection oftapaswhich were delicious. the paella was perfect. it looked magnificent, smelt mouth watering and tasted very authentic. as for the sangria's they were delicious also. to top it off you couldn't get friendlier staff. thanks to all of you for a wonderful experience.

wow!. i'm spanish and have been already out of my country for a while... when i see a spanish restaurant i never go in because that is not spanish food!
meigas was several times recommended and so i gave it a try... and omg! thanks god i did! first ever time i have felt like i'm back to spain being so far away! food is just amazing and made me feel like in heaven but it is not only that! those guys are real spanish people and they have not lose their spanish essence... you can be there chatting for ages and do not stop laughing as i would do with my friends in spain in any bar taking my time to eat withtapasall sharing with beer, wine and delicious coffee....
my heart almost stopped when i knew they have churros con chocolate! went out of there thinking what would i order next day and with a big smile that is still on my face :)
thank you guys!

wonderful. wow... what can i say about this place?

let me start by saying that i am from melbourne and have visited amazing ballarat plenty of times. unfortunately for my husband and i, this trip was just awful! we stayed in really terrible accommodation that was like fawlty towers and a haunted house combined, and had breakfast one morning where my husband got a lovely cockroach in one of his mouthfuls of breakfast (from a cafe in central ballarat). we were so unhappy with other stuff going on but decided to stay on solely to try miegas, which had been recommended.

it ended up being one of the most lovely romantic nights we've had... a slow few hours of eatingtapasaftertapasand sipping velvety spanish wine, and being waited on by the lovely staff and a very accommodating chef. it absolutely saved the weekend for us. we had chorizo in apple cider, grilled prawns, black pudding and fish croquettes and more.
the food was so good, we went back the next day to have lunch there, some of their spanish rolls, which i highly recommend!! my baguette was so crispy and fresh i felt like i was back in france, and the filling was to die for - soft roasted pork, thick serrano ham, garlic aioli and roasted red peppers. heavenly, i still think about it!!

go for dinner and enjoy... but don't forget to try their lunch as well! yum!
