dinner. i have to say this beats the places down on the river walk. the food overall was good, the chips and queso was very good and someone else posted that the flour tortillas are store bought??? they are definitely homemade as well as the butter they serve!

we would come back and try something different.

i recommend it!

la fonda special. excellent plate. 1 cheese enchiladas, 1 tamale, rice, beans, taco and salad.

2nd plate: shrimp taco with mango sauce

this was some of the best mexican food i have had in san antonio. very upscale place. chief visited our table to see how we liked it. service was impeccable. don't hesitate to visit this restaurant. 2 people + desert $45.00

the people were really nice & the drinks came quickly, but the food was not as good as the prices indicated. the cheese enchiladas were not fully cooked thru. at best, it's an "eh."

great food and atmosphere. we had lunch here and the food and service were wonderful. i had the soup and tacos, both were flavorful and delicious. my husband had cappy's favorite and it looked fresh and was also great. we sat inside but the patio looked very nice. our waitress was very attentive and kept bringing us more chips and salsa, which were also very good.

not worth it. the food was ok, but they didn't bring tortillas, we had to ask for them. then they brought us tortillas that tasted like mission brand out of a bag, not home made. you can get away with that in other cities, but not in san antonio, i can get a homemade tortilla in a $.99 breakfast taco for god's sake.

spinach enchiladas. i decided to pass, for a change, on the filete relleno that i usually get these days at la fonda, and went instead for the spinach enchiladas that i had on my first visit there after the lawtons bought the place and made it so much better.

the enchiladas were full of cheese and spinach, served on a bed of excellent white rice, and topped with small spinach leaves blanched in hot peanut oil and allowed to drain until there was no discernible grease left on them. it made a slightly crunchy, very pleasant counterpoint to the soft enchiladas. ¡delicioso!

filete relleno. this dish is generally on special on friday nights, and is one of the reasons i go there at least half a dozen times a year. a very tender steak, seasoned and grilled and stuffed with cheese and peppers. served with mashed potatoes which, if memory serves, are green. i forget why. exquisite eating, and often enough to bring home for a wonderful lunch the next day.

where old san antonio tex-mex meets upscale cuisine. this place is a favorite for locals. try the shrimp nachos, fantastic. don't care for their caldo but everything else we have ever ordered is fabulous.

my wife and i enjoyed the brunch. the picadillo used for the taco was very bland however.

can you say purina dog chow?. we had dinner at crappy's la fonda in february, 2011. what a waste of a nice friday night - i had the combination mexican plate. for starters, my food was brought to me cold. i sent it back. it was brought back to me cold again. i thought restaurants were supposed to serve hot food? i was so hungry that i ate it anyway. it was not very good. the enchiladas were tasteless, the rice was no better & the ice tea was weak & overpriced. i could have squeezed a better meal out of a can of alpo & a box of hamburger helper. nothing to write home about and definitely not worth $18.00. with that kind of money, i could get 2 hot meals at bill miller's & had enough money left over to buy 2 pieces of pecan pie. no tipping required. nothing personal la fonda but your food is no better than all the other over priced so called "mexican restaurants" in the central downtown perimeter. operative question: how did a crummy restaurant like crappy's la fonda end up in a really nice area like monte vista?

what a nice surprise, an unpretentious, comfortable, established restaurant serving delicious food. the sweet potato enchiladas, the spinach enchiladas and the fish tacos are all worth trying.

overpriced for mediocre food. if you want to pay too much money, for mediocre food, you can go here. all you are paying for is the atmosphere. this place has been here since the 1940's but the food is definitely not what it used to be.

pretty functional mexican place, not great, not bad. big salad, nice taco platter, a little unimaginative. the patio had some character but was a bit rundown. the margaritas were on the weak side, but ok. overall an ok place.

service was very poor. my wife's meal was great--mine, not so much. this place has been great for years but seems to be on the decline.
