the bravern
we came on a saturday night, made reservations still had to wait 25 minutes for a table. then we got a horrible server, who could not even take the time to explain the menu,we asked about the difference in the steaks that they offered but apparently he was too busy to really explain them to us. them we asked about the meals for 2, he said they bring the meat to the table and that's it. he didn't offer to tell us about any appetizers or if thier is a signature salad, etc.he didn't even offer a different steak selection of after i ordered a 3oz filet and my spouse ordered chicken. i think that if you are going to a 4 starrestaurantthat a waiter needs to tell you about therestaurantconsidering it was our first time. i did speak to a manager who told our food wad going to be taken care of after the had paid. still waiting for it to be returned to our card. and i was told the general manager was going to call me today, still waiting for that call. i guess i should have written this review earlier, but better late than never. so let's see if i get a response now.

john howie steak is located in ‘the bravern’, an upscale mall in bellevue, washington, just a short drive from seattle. after walking past hermès, louie vuitton, and neiman marcus, i started to get the sense that we were in for a treat…was i ever right! as we walked through the restaurant, i took note of the many different seating areas. therestaurantwas warm and inviting in addition to being private and quiet. i love to eat in a place where you can carry on a conversation and actually hear each other speak! our group was escorted into one of the beautiful private dining rooms. when we sat down at the table and read the menu i heard audible gasps…but those might have just been coming from me. if you look over the menu below, you will understand my excitement.

rude staff. on a visit to seattle from our home in austin, we decided to stop for a late lunch in the bellevue warestaurantsince it had been highly recommended at the sur la table store.

we were astounded at the rude and unhelpful greeting both at the reception desk and the bar. the waiter in the bar was cold, unsmiling, indifferent to whether we ordered or not, and very unhelpful. we immediately left without ordering. this was an extremely disappointing experience in one of the seattle areas supposedly premiere restaurants.

it’s tough for me to give a 5 out of 5 but this was really darn close. everything was really good and the service was excellent. therestaurantis nice inside. we had a rather loud table dining next to us which was a little bit of a distraction but our server explained to us that “the loud guy” was the man that provides john howie with all the steaks for the restaurant. it was nice of him to give us that information, making the noise a little bit more justifiable. i would definitely go back to john howie and try the other sides and other cuts of beef. their lunch menu looks really good and apparently they have a great happy hour menu as well.

average overall. this an upscale steakhouse in the bravern complex in bellevue that stll can get better. i took my wife here for her 60th birthday dinner and she very much enjoyed herself as did i and we'd probably come back some time.

the ambience is typical steakhouse and done tastefully and we had a nice window table with a great view of i-405 and 112th ave. ne. so don't go there for the view!

the food was very good expecially the steaks we had. my wife had the combination plate of wagyu and real japamese kobe beef. she had never had this before and contunually raved about how good it was, as was my wagyu filet. the table side ceasar salad was pretty average for arestaurantof this caliber and it had too much mustard in the dressing for our taste. the morel mushrooms and english peas we had as a side dish were very good. we brought our own bottle of wine and they charge a $25 corkage fee, which is pretty typical of an expenside restaurant. the bananas foster at the end of the meal was also quite good, but certainly not the best we've ever had. the service was also very good!

bottom line: if you want excellent kobe beef this place is a good choice, but if it's regular prime beef you're after we would suggest the el gaucho in bellevue is the better choice. it has better service, better ceasar salad and the steaks are also wonderful and the food is presented in a better manner. for eitherrestaurantbring money and lots of it becasue you're probably going to drop around $200 plus for just two people for dinner.

not worth it.... well, the wife and i went back to thisrestaurantafter not being happy with things the first time, we wanted to give them a second chance... so this is an updated review.

again.....the ambience was great, wait staff knowledgeable and friendly, but that is really where it stopped for us.

a lesson from the first time around, order your steaks with less seasoning if you don't want it to taste overly salty, we did this and the steaks were brought out as ordered and were very good.

now onto the not so good...

we ordered the mac and cheese and asparagus on this side. the mac and cheese had a great flavor, would have been amazing if it were hot! asparagus, the same way, not hot!

ordered the table-side caesar, we talked with the person making it about how we really loved anchovies in the salad, we ate the salad and noticed not a single anchovy to be found...

so, disappointed yet again. we aren't food snobs, but i know what a good meal is, and at best this meal was decent. for the money we spent it should be phenomenal, how do you spend $200 for a meal and not get your food hot? it's inexcusable and there are better places to eat if you are going to drop that kind of money.

sorry john, we really wanted this to be great the second time through and it was just average.

i will say going for lunch or happy hour, the burgers are excellent, but i won't be ordering a steak or a full dinner again...

truly the finest steak in bellevue!. i have been to all the steak houses on the east side and i have to say that john howie steak is hands down the best. the variety of menu items and excellent quality of the steak they serve is amazing.

i eaten there at least 2-3 times a week for lunch and have almost had everything on their lunch menu. most items on the lunch menu are $15 and under so quite reasonable for a fine diningrestaurantat lunch time. some of my favorites on the lunch menu are the steak salad which has a generous portion of steak and topped with crispy fried onions. the shrimp salad is not only delicious but the presentation is very artistic. if you want a real treat try the filet oscar over a yukon gold potato cake and asparagus topped with dungeness crab and bernaise.

john howie steak house. ate there this week for a special occasion. the food was amazing and the service superb. i'm not a huge meat-and-potatoes eater, but still ordered a filet since it is a steak house. the steak and the twice-baked potato were among the best i've ever tasted. what really sets thisrestaurantapart is the service. they made us feel very special for our anniversary, and they even treated us to a dessert gratis, and sent us home with some chocolate treats. will definitely return. it's expensive, but worth it.

oh my. yum. really, this was a very special dinner. from the bread through to the dessert, everything had a flavor that was well planned. never have i seen a wine list with so many glass pour options. it made it really fun to select from. i ate the japanese wagyu filet. only 4 oz, but what a wonderful treat. this isn't american wagyu, it is flown in fresh from japan. and they present you with a special "shun" knife from japan to cut it with. nice touch. we ended up spending a little bit of money, but the reward was remarkable. bellevue may have just found arestaurantthat is better than any of those in seattle. celebrate!

i got to eat at craft steak in las vegas - chef tom colicchio's place. there is really no comparison. both the steaks and sides at john howie steak are superior.
