our waiter, treated us very well throughout the meal - making sure we didn't have any food allergies and asking if we were celebrating anything. fried gnocchi with truffle creme sauce is crazy. their burger is great. drinks are off the hook, especially the spicy pear kamikaze and the provincial goose. overall, if you have the money to spend, enjoy yourselves atjohnhowie steak!

great food, horrible service.

first of all, i'm convinced this place is a little racist. the back corner had 5 tables. every table in that corner had mainland asians sitting at it. there were no other asians at other tables in the restaurant.

the maître d was by far the highlight of the night. his whole demeanor was negative and ruined the whole night for me. he was very rude, terse, and pushy. he kept emphasizing that the filet and salmon didn't come with any sides and kept trying to push us to order more when we didn't want more because we had a late lunch. i almost stopped him and yelled "i know how to read a menu" but refrained and decided to be the better person. when we told him that we would be sharing a bowl of chowder he kept asking how we were going to share that and i felt pressured to order two. i don't know if he thought we couldn't afford the place or decided to treat us horribly because we weren't ordering that much but either way, it wasn't appropriate.

after we were served, nobody else came by our table and asked how the food was. the bus boy eventually came by the table and asked if we would like the dessert menu but by then we were ready to get out so we just paid the check and left.
horrible experience. i was actually looking forward to our dinner here because my boyfriend comes here for lunch all of the time and he only had good things to say but after this experience neither of us will be patrons ofjohnhowie again.

let me take a moment to introduce you tojohnhowie: husband, father, grandfather, chef, restaurateur. chef howie divides his time between his restaurants and i had the opportunity to meet him the first time i visitedjohnhowie steak. i’ve since learned more about him, his restaurants, his philanthropic efforts, and his cookbooks.

jhs has the upscale steakhouse vibe happening with elegant booths, classy service, and fabulous food for the deeper-pocketed crowd. chefjohnhowie offers a wide variety of highest quality steak (be sure to check the display case at the entrance to the restaurant). we enjoyed a study in contrast between a 4-ounce japanese a5 wagyu filet mignon and a 16-ounce american wagyu eye of the rib eye. (see the slideshow above for mouthwatering photos.)

tempura fried bacon, where have you been all my life?. my husband and i went for a celebratory night out last night atjohnhowie. it was a splurge, but i wanted to thank him for his years of support while i finished my degree. our booth was large but nice and cozy. our waiter, mason, treated us very well throughout the meal - making sure we didn't have any food allergies and asking if we were celebrating anything.

we started with the tempura fried kurobota bacon with maple sambal ponzu and it was mind blowing and life changing. we had the table-side caesar salad, which was the best caesar salad either of us had ever had.
their drink menu is impressive - pages and pages of liquor and wine chices. i settled on a dirty vodka martini made with local dry fly vodka with my appetizer, and with dinner a glass ofjohnhowie merlot.

for our entrees we both had ribeyes. my husband had the 42 day dry aged 16 oz ribeye, and had it oscar style with bernaise, crab, and asparagus. i had the 28 day dry aged 16 oz ribeye with the foie gras butter. the steaks were good, but weren't the best part of the meal. next time were are going to go for the wagyu steaks. for sides we had the 5 cheese twice baked potato, which was amazing, and the creamed spinach, which was disappointing. fortunately, our excellent waiter noticed our disappointment with it, appologized, and we were not charged for it. that is what i call good service! since we were celebrating we were also comped our dessert - a perfect and substantial creme brulee. mine was accompanied by a glass of grand marnier - served in a perfectly large snifter - and my husband had his coffee. french press of course - with a towering assortment of cubed sugars. also served in a preheated mug. perfect touch.
in all our meal was $248 - we had a $60 of groupon, which brought the total to $188, with tip a total of $240 for the two of us. definitely a splurge, but for a 2.5 hour relaxing dinner and amazing service it was a worthwhile experience.

it’s tough for me to give a 5 out of 5 but this was really darn close. everything was really good and the service was excellent. the restaurant is nice inside. we had a rather loud table dining next to us which was a little bit of a distraction but our server explained to us that “the loud guy” was the man that providesjohnhowie with all the steaks for the restaurant. it was nice of him to give us that information, making the noise a little bit more justifiable. i would definitely go back tojohnhowie and try the other sides and other cuts of beef. their lunch menu looks really good and apparently they have a great happy hour menu as well.

like this place but....johnhowie's is really a hit or miss. i've been there about 8 or so times and every time the service and food has been inconsistent. i've ate both in the bar and the restaurant. had an amazing experience with my last filet but have had mixed experiences in the past with their happy hour specials being overcooked. i'd say if you had a horrible experience in the past, give it another try.

but i really wanted to complain because my steak was too expensive: atjohnhowie steakhouse you can order combinations: diners can choose two four-ounce portions of different kinds of steak. $55 got us one each of an american wagyu filet

surprise!. decided to "splurge" and go tojohnhowie for lunch and much to our surprise, the lunch menu is incredible and delicious! i got the sandwich and soup combination - smoked turkey sandwich and the french onion soup. both were healthy portions (they almost needed to roll me out) and delicious!

surprise!. sophisticated, but incredibly expensive! i shouldn't have been surprised, but if a steak costs more than $50, i'm out of my budget range! the food is very well prepared. i really enjoyed the caesar salad, made from scratch directly at our table. the filet mignon was cooked to perfection and the five cheese baked potato makes my mouth water even now. beware the dessert menu! they are sinfully delicious and just as sinfully priced! overall, if you have the money to spend, enjoy yourselves atjohnhowie steak! otherwise, consider paying your bills instead. =)

overrated and underserved. we had dinner this week atjohnhowie steak and we were really disappointed. the calamari appetizer was greasy and overpriced but the real issue was that it took over 45 minutes to bring our entrees. terrible and the waiter apologizing every 10 minutes didn't really help. is the kitchen that inefficient or did they lose our order? we'll never know. we watched other people be seated, order and leave before we ever saw our dinner which was only passable. i couldn't even finish my chicken- i was beyond hungry at that point and just wanted to go home. they offered free dessert but it was too little to late . eventually they compt'd us the appetizer but we won't be back; its too much money to risk being treated that way again.

john howie, owner of seastar, also ownsjohnhowie steak, where he's perfecting the art of cooking yet another type of animal. while "steak" is in the restaurant's name, there was another reason i recently went to steak. a very good friend of mine, adam, entered and won a contest to name executive chef mark hipkiss's new burger. the new burger, aptly named the "kiss your hips goodbye" burger has faced some criticism . criticism aside, i can barely describe how excited i was

the guy we blame is mark hipkiss. according to the emroidery on his white coat, he's executive chef ofjohnhowie steak , the culinary pride of bellevue's tony bravern complex. chef hipkiss was apparently not content serving dainty deviled eggs alongside
