this store popped up in a few lists for "brisbane's best gluten free bakeries". we recently bought a supersized orange & almond gf cake here for a friends birthday and it was amazing. everyone asked where it was from and nobody could believe it was gf - it was so delicious and moist! we can't wait to try more of their beautiful cakes and pastries. thank youjocelyn'sprovisions :)

walking intojocelyn'sprovisions, it is easy to be taken in by the beauty of the cakes, breads and other provisions, as well as the slightly rustic feel.

unfortunately, we found most of the selections to be fairly average to slightly above average and overpriced.

we purchased a blonde brownie ($5.90), a salted caramel & chocolate tart ($7.50) and a bag of chocolate shortbread cookies ($11.80).

the blonde brownie was chewy white chocolate and macadamia. this was the highlight of our purchases and rates a 3.5.

the salted caramel & chocolate tart was a chocolate pastry and salted caramel topped with dark chocolate ganache. while eating this i could not stop thinking how much better the same tart is at matthew thomas (sandgate and aspley) - and the matthew thomas salted caramel & chocolate tart is both larger and less expensive. jocelyn'sprovisions' tart rates a 3.

the chocolate shortbread buttons had good flavor (3.5), but weren't a good value (honestly didn't realize they were this expensive until after i'd paid) - this too rates a 3.

would consider returning to try the bread and iced carrot cake, but there are several other bakeries that rate higher in my opinion.

mini meatball and lady meatball hit the brownie and tart before i could get pictures (except the box).

a 'pecan and chocolate brownie' ($5.7) was a buttery chocolate brownie with crunchy pecan pieces topped with white chocolate ganache. laid my eyes on it when we walked in but it just looked very very sweet, which it was. the chocolate brownie was very buttery with lots of crunchy pecan pieces which melts in your mouth when bitten. it was very moist and an easy comforting food, however the white chocolate ganache was much sweeter than i thought it would have been, maybe even without it, i would have also liked it. the closest cafe fromjocelyn'swas vroom bistro. there were many dining there and a few having coffee. since we just couldn't be bothered walking back to where we were going to originally, and it was rather getting quite hot, we opted to try here since we haven't tried vroom before anyway. we sat down but the tables seemed to still be quite messy with the previous diner's food. we tried getting the waiter's attention but they seemed to only be lingering around or just trying to avoid eye contact. when we did catch an attention, all we received was a short reply stating that they will be right back or they will be with us in a minute. but there, after a minute, five minutes etc, they still didn't come. we ended up going up to the counter to order and telling them again to please clean our tables. so, customer service? a no for me..

jocelyn's provisions - fortitude valley, brisbane. renowned around the nation, people from all around town flood tojocelyn'sprovisions at the centro on james street, fortitude valley to sample their treats, buy their items and even sometimes just to marvel at the selection that is on offer. everything is done and made straight from the source; walking in the door the customers are basically in between a commercial kitchen and a retail shop. this is an artisan bakery that focuses on quality, therefore the prices of items are not cheap.jocelyn'sprovisions is mostly thought of with their selection of sweets: all sorts of cakes, slices, pastries and tarts. they have plenty of other options in store, including preserves, pies (both sweet and savoury) and all sort of breads. you can practically smell all the scents coming from the kitchen, and just try not to salivate over them. additionally, they are keen to cater for any sort of party.

after a good breakfast out, and getting an errand done nearby, my brother-in-law felt like something sweets and to get another coffee from elsewhere. the drive was due north, but more in an aimless sort of way and it was all up to wondering what places around the area could service both the coffee and cake style cravings. after a bit of fiddling with the application, i finally realised in the area that this place was nearby and would definitely satiate most sweet cravings. so it was to find park and get some sweets.

for once it is well positioned, or at least has a number of aspects done right for access. there is a parking space in centro for customers only, and right outside are a few tables to sit at (though they could have been owned by the store next to it; erring on the side of caution, my brother-in-law and i went elsewhere). just a note before going into the store, they do not serve drinks here. they must get this question a lot (people thinking it is a coffee and cake sort of place). if you want to have a coffee, there are places nearby - including one really good one just across the road - to complement the sweet that you get. service is fast, and very proficiently done. it is all with needed enthusiasm for a well-made product.

what is guaranteed is that it will take quite a while to know what you are going to have from here. it took a while for either of us to decide which sweets to get. ultimately, it ended up with his being a lemon delicious and i went for the reliable old brownie. these both ended up being good choices. the lemon delicious was a substantial size, giving how rich the texture was. it was creamy, had a good amount of coconut meringue on top of it. what was really good was the combination of tangy and sweet flavours mingling in the custard. this might have well been the better of the two, and that is coming from someone who really likes their brownies. these brownies are way above average, dusted with cocoa powder to give them even more of a chocolatey consistency and flavour. not crumbly like many other varieties, and smooth in texture - this was also a winner.

while this place is certainly deemed worthy of a return visit, that return visit is "sometimes". this place is not cheap, and many of the items for sale are far from healthy.jocelyn'sprovisions would be hell for anyone who is on a diet of any kind. on the positive note, they deserve the reputation that they get and aficionados of baking would be in heaven visiting here. if anyone i know is feeling like something a bit sweet, this is one of the prime places to visit.

average. i have mixed feelings aboutjocelyn'sprovisions. i feel that it is a decent shop, but is highly overrated. the majority of their cakes are dry and grainy with sickeningly sweet frosting. their pastry is all right, but doesn't hold a candle to other places in new farm. their savoury offerings are all right as well, but can be hit and miss. that being said, they do do a handful of things very well. their carrot cake is moist and delicious with proper cream cheese frosting on it (thank god!) that has a nice hint of orange. the sour cream chocolate cake is very good. the sticky date pudding, portuguese custard tarts and florentines are also worth checking out. unfortunately, it's high end pricing on middle of the road product.

the next step in the process was for us to head over tojocelyn'sprovisions for morning tea, which included some wonderfully cooked cakes with honey, as well as sampling different 'flavours' of honey from bee one third. the flavour of honey is dependent upon the pollen collected and no two batches taste exactly the same and are dependent upon the flowering flora.

not only does this splendid store offer baked treats, its also a great destination to source essential ingredients for your larder. the shelves are chocked full of dreamy preserves, relishes, muesli and chocolate. adding to thisjocelyn'sis also a good place for to shop for boutique oils and vinegars.

i had a great time picking things out atjocelyn'sprovisions. the cabinets and shelves are absolutely loaded with sweet and savory baked treats. for anyone short on time, this would be the place to go to pick something up for a 'bring a plate of food' occasion. it would be nice if they had a little cafe area so we could enjoy the smaller cakes and things with a cup of coffee on site but that's me dreaming.

previous employee - not a bad word to say. i used to work for jocelyn's, and i have left without a bad word to say about it. yes, it is comparatively expensive - but you really do get what you pay for. they use lindt chocolate for everything, and you can genuinely taste the difference. my personal favourites are the raspberry friends, chocolate and sour cream cake with white chocolate ganache icing (to die for), and the blonde brownie. go tojocelyn'sprovisions! if you appreciate good cake, you will not be disappointed.
