thechocolateand sour cream cake is so famous but i find it just okay. it’s quite dense and i get sick of the taste after two bites.

but what i do love is the carrot cake, banana bread, florentines andchocolatechip biscuits. there’s always a beautiful range of cakes, biscuits, pastries, etc. just a lovely little store!

wow what else can i say? this place rocks- my eyes boggled upon glancing my eyes at the delights in here. that hugechocolatecake was just memorizing, but coffee reared it's force against temptation & i settled for their unique home blend brew which turned out to be smooth & delicious with ample strength. accompanied by a mini orange coconut number i satiated my sweet tooth

the cakes are delicious, not too sweet. well-balanced. our favourite is the sour creamchocolatecake. a big winner for office morning tea or after dinner treats or anytime really.
the savoury tart is also delicious.

jocelyn's provisions is the place to where i go whenever i need a cake for a special occasion.
have had a couple of good experiences in the past and today after the fiasco at pineapple express we decided to get ourselves a treat.

we got the salted caramel cupcake and the pecan andchocolatebrownie.

the caramel cupcake made me rethink all of my previous experiences with this place, the custard on top only tasted like butter and the cake itself didn't have much flavour whatsover. would give it a 2/5.

the pecan andchocolatebrownie was way better than the cupcake but still not worth its price, the brownie could have morechocolateflavour to it, and also the texture was kinda not what i was expecting, this brownie was more to the crumbly side as it was crunchy all way through, the problem is that i felt like the crunchiness was coming from something like sugar crystals or something similar as if there was too much sugar so it didn't get all dissolved in the brownie batter or something. would give it a 3/5.

overall my previous experience with their cakes was excellent, for example this week i grabbed a cake for my partner, almond and orange cake if i'm not wrong, and it was almost perfect, soft, moist and the perfect sweetness to it.

so i might not consider coming back for a treat, but i will be back for their cakes.

we love joecelyns. highly highly recommend the blondie. fantastic cakes and tarts. breads are brilliant too. we love the packaged sweets, they're brilliant to fill a hamper with for gifts or take a box of goodies to a dinner with friends. it's pricey but i think it's worth it. we've ordered a few cakes and never been disappointed until our last cake order. we ordered salted caramel to feed 30 people, we certainly paid for it but we were okay with that because of how good the previous ones have been. sadly it was so salty, almost too salty to eat and very dry. that was disappointing. but always good service and we are prepared to order more cakes in the future and give them a second go. we love thechocolatecream cheese cake.

walking into jocelyn's provisions, it is easy to be taken in by the beauty of the cakes, breads and other provisions, as well as the slightly rustic feel.

unfortunately, we found most of the selections to be fairly average to slightly above average and overpriced.

we purchased a blonde brownie ($5.90), a salted caramel &chocolatetart ($7.50) and a bag ofchocolateshortbread cookies ($11.80).

the blonde brownie was chewy whitechocolateand macadamia. this was the highlight of our purchases and rates a 3.5.

the salted caramel &chocolatetart was achocolatepastry and salted caramel topped with darkchocolateganache. while eating this i could not stop thinking how much better the same tart is at matthew thomas (sandgate and aspley) - and the matthew thomas salted caramel &chocolatetart is both larger and less expensive. jocelyn's provisions' tart rates a 3.

thechocolateshortbread buttons had good flavor (3.5), but weren't a good value (honestly didn't realize they were this expensive until after i'd paid) - this too rates a 3.

would consider returning to try the bread and iced carrot cake, but there are several other bakeries that rate higher in my opinion.

mini meatball and lady meatball hit the brownie and tart before i could get pictures (except the box).

exceptional as always.
the first time i was told about this little gem, i couldn't find it, & thought my friend was confused about locale.
he wasn't, it's just tucked behind a couple of restaurants & has a frontage in seemingly a 'home improvement' section of james st.
food is always beautiful, freshly made & a delight to eat.
it's a pity they don't have a little sit down area, to be fair... i'd have no idea where they would put it as it's quite a small space.
vege tarts are always packed full of tasty, chunky delights. every mouthful seems to have every vegetable possible in it (i had the mediterranean special today).
the polenta stack was filling for soming so small & dare i say, 'pretty' & also a winner.
i had a lovely saltedchocolatetart as well, soo rich , soo, soooo tasty........
umm, yeah, anyhow, back to the review.
it's always, consistantly better than 'good'. try it if your a local (or visitor), sure win. they have a variety of prepackaged treats on the shelf, i've yet to try those.
it's not a cheap trip to the local bakery btw, i certainly didn't see $4 sausage rolls, so if that's your thing i'd probably keep walking. i think it's a case of getting what you pay for, & i think it's worth the cost.
staff aren't particularly noteworthy, finally managed to get a half smile out of my server. perfectly fine though.
.... guaranteed return customer.

if you're going to a bakery like this in james street, you know it's going to be a little more pricey than others - so for that i won't dock a point.
yes this bakery is truly top quality and it shows. their cakes are delicious and devoid of that awful manufactured taste and touch. they're moist, delicious and beautifully presented. a perfect gift for someone or finish to a birthday.
their quiches are overflowing with chunks of fresh veg and i appreciate how rare that is to find!
would recommend the sour creamchocolatecake - smooth, lush and to die for.

have been going here for years for cakes. our favourites arechocolatesour cream and the vanilla bean butter cake. don't ask them to do anything out of the ordinary if it be for a special occasion though as it will cost you a bit. last few times i have found the staff unpleasant so won't be purchasing here for my next celebration.

a 'pecan andchocolatebrownie' ($5.7) was a butterychocolatebrownie with crunchy pecan pieces topped with whitechocolateganache. laid my eyes on it when we walked in but it just looked very very sweet, which it was. thechocolatebrownie was very buttery with lots of crunchy pecan pieces which melts in your mouth when bitten. it was very moist and an easy comforting food, however the whitechocolateganache was much sweeter than i thought it would have been, maybe even without it, i would have also liked it. the closest cafe from jocelyn's was vroom bistro. there were many dining there and a few having coffee. since we just couldn't be bothered walking back to where we were going to originally, and it was rather getting quite hot, we opted to try here since we haven't tried vroom before anyway. we sat down but the tables seemed to still be quite messy with the previous diner's food. we tried getting the waiter's attention but they seemed to only be lingering around or just trying to avoid eye contact. when we did catch an attention, all we received was a short reply stating that they will be right back or they will be with us in a minute. but there, after a minute, five minutes etc, they still didn't come. we ended up going up to the counter to order and telling them again to please clean our tables. so, customer service? a no for me..

average. i have mixed feelings about jocelyn's provisions. i feel that it is a decent shop, but is highly overrated. the majority of their cakes are dry and grainy with sickeningly sweet frosting. their pastry is all right, but doesn't hold a candle to other places in new farm. their savoury offerings are all right as well, but can be hit and miss. that being said, they do do a handful of things very well. their carrot cake is moist and delicious with proper cream cheese frosting on it (thank god!) that has a nice hint of orange. the sour creamchocolatecake is very good. the sticky date pudding, portuguese custard tarts and florentines are also worth checking out. unfortunately, it's high end pricing on middle of the road product.
