great steaks but maybe if you like medium rare, ask them to have it a bit more in the rare side. mine was just a bit toocookedfor my preference. they are quite busy on a friday so book in advance. service was a bit slow but maybe because it was really busy. pricey but tastes good so not complaining. they have a good selection of wines and staff are very polite. great for date nights!

every time i dine at jsh i come away satisfied.
the steaks here are simply the best. i highly recommend the signature prime rib, which you have to order 24 hours ahead of time because its slowcookedfor about 12. this results in an extremely tender steak and fat just melts in your mouth, the queen cut was plenty with all the other dishes.

the sauces are jam packed full of flavour, the side dishes are great especially the candied kumara, plus i recommend the calamari schnitzel as a starter.

so if you have a special occasion and are looking for the top streaks around, i highly recommend this place.

all i can say it wow! was a absolute amazing time. originally i was worried about the price and size of the steaks seen when i googled the place but all i could fit in is a steak and a side. i had eye fillet on the bone and it was a good portion andcookedto perfection, best steak i've ever eaten. the service was wonderful, all friendly, professional staff really new there stuff! 10/10 would recommend !

ps. if getting fries get the truffle fries much better than the regular

beautiful establishment. service was impeccable. 9pm booking on a friday night and they don’t rush you.
entree, ordered the white bait fritters and the grill prawns. i thought the egg overpowered the actual taste of the white bait. the lemon butter sauce was more on the lemon side but it paired well with the fritter. the grill prawns was out of this world scrumptious. had to suck out the juices from the heads.cookedperfectly and the flat bread that came with it went well with scooping up the sauce and the prawn juice.
for mains, we ordered the chicken bread with harissa sauce and t-bone steak.
this was the only place that had the curtesy of bringing out your choice of steak raw and showing it to you what you’ll be eating. i thought that was an awesome practice on their part. this steak was the biggest we’ve ever seen and the biggest my partner ate. he enjoyed it thoroughly and wascookedexactly to his preference. for $97 for the steak alone, you’d think it’ll come with sides but no. you have to order the sides separately. you get a choice of 2 sauces and we chose the jalapeño hollandaise & bernaise sauce. both went well but the jalapeño hollandaise stood out more. my chicken breast wascookedperfectly. not dry not rubber, just chefs kiss perfect. chicken was on a silver beet with harissa. cannot fault anything in this dish. all the flavours worked well together. for sides we ordered candied kumara with pecans. the sweetness of the kumara worked well with freshly roasted pecans. the whipped potato was nothing special. very bland no seasoning. the herb slaw with pecans was refreshing and i thought it cuts down the richness of the candied kumara. finally for dessert we had the pavlova with passion fruit curd and lycheesl ice cream. this was a beautiful ending to a wonderful meal. pavlova had a crispy shell but soft inside with a gush of passion fruit curd. lychee ice cream was subtle. went well with the tanginess of the curd.
overall experience at jsh was beautiful. between the 2 of us our bill came to $314 lol.
it’s on the pricier side of dining but its something you have to experience once in a lifetime especially if you’re a steak fanatic.

have been wanting to come here for a while now but have never got around to it. my 2 friends and i came the other night for dinner and we weren’t disappointed! 3x eye fillet steakscookedto absolute perfection, decent sizes as well. the jalapeño hollandaise.. out of this world!! i have never seen that as an option for a sauce before and i’m so glad i did because now i have a new obsession! buttery, creamy & with that little spicy kick ugh now i want it again. fresh home made onion rings, again more than decent sized and so crispy and crunchy, delicious. side of broccolini, can’t go wrong with it, was crunchy and seasoned well & the whipped mash, creamy and seasoned well. drinks were ok! ordered a few vodka lemon lime and bitters, had to ask for more bitters as you couldn’t taste it or even barely see it in the drink but aside from that everything was great. service was friendly, inviting and attentive will definitely return in near future.

first time trying and will never return. friendly service initially but very defensive upon hearing their food is overcooked. several blunders including serving sauce when mentioned prior no sauce due to an allergy, and 2 inconsistentlycookedsteaks.
ordered 1 medium rare wagyu scotch and was served medium well. this was redone promptly but the replacement steak was medium rare on one side, blue on the other.
ordered 1 medium wagyu scotch and was served mostly medium rare but 1/3 through the steak (started eating left to right) realised it was overcooked that it was tough to chew.
mentioned to the waiter that 1/3 of the steak was undercooked, 1/3 was overcooked and tough and asked what he could do because it’s so tough i couldn’t eat it. defensive that it was overcooked and it’s normal for the edge of the steak. then he said the head chef wouldn’t accept it as it’s only 1/3 of a steak left. i can’t be the only person to slice into steak as i eat instead of cutting it all up at once??
manager came over and said they wouldn’t replace a whole steak despite 2 steaks being inconsistentlycooked(all good), but his take was that the meat had ‘cooked’ while on the plate and therefore became hard and overcooked. he suggested he can make me another steak and he thought i’d be paying for a 2nd steak when i still had 1/3 of a steak that was inedible 🤣. offered free dessert instead but i came for steak...not dessert. not all that glitters is gold.

my partner felt like “a good piece of steak”. when we ordered a5 mbs12 wagyu, we didn’t know it was the rarest, highest quality piece of beef in the world. we also ordered picanha (rump cap) as our youtube meat guru insists this is the cut to go for.

the a5 wagyu met every expectation we had of “a good piece of steak” and more. it cut effortlessly and had the most subtle resistance, exploding with sweet juices when chewed. it was unimaginably tender - a memorable 🥲 food experience.

the a5 was so good, no sauces needed, that the rump cap got left in the dust, but this was perfectlycookedas well. all the sides came in generous portions (3 sides for $27). a decent wine selection, and a very friendly italian waiter also, who kept my glass of sparkling water topped up the whole night.

i was sad to conclude our “good piece of steak” experience, but now have a favourite steakhouse, and food to look forward to on our next special occasion.

i ordered the salmon which was beautifullycookedand very oceanic. the highlight of my dish was probably the broccolini which i would have gladly eaten a whole plate of. for sides we ordered the fries, onion rings and creamed spinach which were all winners in their own ways. ev’s steak was honestly so average and made me happy i ordered fish at a steakhouse. all i want to know is why?? the wagyu honestly just felt like i was eating sirloin from the supermarket and was nothing special. would i recommend jervois steak house? if you want bomb sides then yes. if you want some delicious cocktails or mocktails then yes (the pink chihuahua was both delicious and lethal). if you want service with great chat then yes. if you want closely spaced tables where you can eavesdrop on other peoples conversations as you eat your dinner then yes. if you want a wellcookedsteak to write home about then no, please save your coin. my overall rating of jervois steak house would have to be one big meh, no thank you. never again.

after being told to come here as its apparently "the best steak place in auckland".... we were let down, especially for a place that has a 4.7/5 star rating. what sounded good on the menu and presented well... thats all it was. 4 of us attended, 2 sent their meals back as it was undercooked(i was also going to send mine back but couldn't get bothered waiting). we asked for medium and medium rare and got a piece of beef that looked like it had been on a cast-iron pan for a min on each side. all they did was chuck it back on and serve it back. the beef was cold. the pulled lamb was way too salty. only good thing was the service by the waiter (as they show the cut they're going to be cooking you), the mash kumara and my mates t-bone steak. went to pay the bill, the guy didn't seem to care about our feedback about the experience we just had. spent over $400 here and definitely won't be reattending here. rather go to the grill instead, wouldn't recommend this place at all.

had my eye on jsh for a number of years and was able to make it over to this part of auckland for once so i went for it.

its a two level restaurant thats beautifully outfitted and very intimate. service was quick and attentive.

the calamari was different to what you would usually expect but i think the black bean puree and tomatillo salsa actually lift this dish into something else. a mexican inspired dish? where the calamari is an element of the wider dish. i really liked it.

for the mains there are numerous steak options as well as what you would typically find as alternate mains at a steak house. i saw venison and i was sold. done rare with cafe de paris butter what more can you want. perfectlycookedand a fantastic cut.

highly recommend this place or pravda if you are in wellington as i think they share a menu in the steaks department.

5/5 for service, food, and ambience. with a fireplace and the dim lighting, it was the perfect place to go for a romantic dinner. waiters took my coat and assisted us the whole night. the food was quite quick to come.
we ordered a white bait fritter starter, queen cut rib eye (w/ cafe de paris butter), scotch angus (w/ green peppercorn sauce), and a side of chips with aioli. the white bait fritter was rather small for $30 which was the only down side. the edges were crispy and smokey, the middle was soft and almost gooey which was delicious. the hollandaise sauce was tangy and complemented the fritter well. my rib eye was probably the best steak i've had! it was slowcookedand medium, so it was very tender. however the scotch angus was a bit tough. both were evenly seared throughout, even on the edges, seasoning was perfect and they were juicy, even without the accompanying sauces.

we came here for a birthday celebratory dinner as a group of six. the ambience was intimate and authentic. our waiter (cannot recall his name) looked after us well, he was friendly and energetic. we started off with bread and each of us ordered a steak with accompanying sides to share. i had ordered the wagyu firstlight scotch ($69), which was shown to me in all its raw marbling glory before beingcookedto medium perfection. each bite melted in my mouth and i was in steak heaven. i can say the same for everyone else at our table.

it was overall an enjoyable night.

easily my favourite steakhouse to go. this is the epitome of great steak in auckland. usually try to save visits here for special occasions such as birthdays etc so as not to desensitise myself and become too accustomed to eating their steaks. all the steaks i’ve tried taste amazing, but i usually prefer to go for one of the wagyu options as i prefer the stronger flavour. asking for fries to becookedin truffle oil is another plus to add.
