the thing i like most about jazushi is the food. it sounds like it should be obvious... after all a restaurant serving good food can hardly be ground-breaking! however in the drive to find something new and interesting often the food can be left behind, a reticent understudy, as ambience and innovation become the stars of the show. and jazushi certainly does provide ambience and innovation. jazz and sushi... a seemingly unlikely mix that works so well together you wonder why allsushidoesn't come with a trio playing in the background. the atmosphere in the front room where we are seated is modern yet cosy. it is a place to come with friends and share a meal. and at the heart of it all is a menu, simple and small, yet bursting with excitement. "what do you want to order", someone asks. "everything" is the only possible response. yet everything cannot be ordered... time, our wallets, and limited stomach capacity decree it cannot be so. so everyone picks

jazz +sushi= jazushi = a beautiful japanese restaurant with fun and sometimes, live jazz music. this is one of my favourites in sydney and absolutely perfect for a date night! we opted for the omakase and all of the dishes were so delicious and more-ish that we ordered more food to try on the side. i really recommend trying the hiramasa kingfish sashimi, grilled hokkaido scallops, curry chicken breast, yuzu cake and matcha sundae!

came here because of the good reviews and was disappointed, the food was overpriced for the quality and you were essentially paying for pretty pink lighting and a guy singing to jazz music on a piano in a corner.

the kingfishsushiwas just a bowl of rice topped with kingfish that you had to diy, but it had plenty of rice and not enough fish and overall was just an unimpressive deconstructedsushithat was deconstructed for no reason.

while the scallops were nice in theory, they were overly oily and lacking much flavour.

the best dish of the night were the buttered prawns, although again they were way too oily, the prawn heads had good flavour when bitten though.

we couldn’t make it to dessert

if you are prepared to wait 2 hours between dishes and are not hungry then this is the perfect place for you!
we went there last night to celebrate my husband's birthday. it was 4 adults and a 9 year old.
we arrived just before 7.30. they sat us right next to the piano so talking was out of the question.
the staff was polite and at our request changed our table to the upstairs area which was much more pleasant. we ordered some entrees and a largesushiplate.
the entrees came and then we waited and waited and waited.
by 9.30 i went to ask when thesushiplate was coming as my daughter was literally falling sleep. i explained that i had a child and that it was getting really late for her to be out so if they could hurry up would be good.
the waiter politely went to ask the lady preparing the food in the kitchen and i saw some arguing happening, he came back and said that we had to ask at least another 20 minutes for thesushiplate.
we decided to cancel this order and left really hungry. it was an awful night for everybody.

jazushi has live jazz on saturday nights; unfortunately, we were seated outside the back of the restaurant where the music wasn't very clear. we went for the set menu which was alright but not outstanding. best items were the salmon carpaccio; the braised pork belly; and the creme brulee. didn't like the fried chicken nor the fried cheese.sushiwas ok. our table was ignored most of the night possibly because we were outside. portions were small so hungry diners might need to scour for a post-dinner feed.

i've been to this restaurant a few times over the past few years but unfortunately, i feel like i'm not likely to return anytime soon. i used to feel excited about the food but knowing how it was before, i feel disappointed to know that the sashimi cuts are smaller than before, that the oysters and scallops don't have that same generous feel and that thesushirice feels ... deflated.

we ordered 7 dishes between 4 of us but due to the small portion sizes we would have wanted to order more. however, the bill had already come to around $130 and so we decided to just call it a night.

very lively atmosphere but it gets very noisy when the music is playing. it may be different to what you are expecting and may not be suitable if you want intimate conversation.

i've been to this restaurant a couple of times. at first i thought it's a small place but they have upstairs too. we ordered some sushi, sashimi and other small dishes. thesushithey served was westernised so it's disappointing. food is slightly above average. the atmosphere is quite nice so it's a good place for a date.

the atmosphere at jazushi was quite unique. there was live jazz playing throughout the night which really set the mood. being a small restaurant, service was attentive and prompt. we ordered a variety of dishes as i was excited by the menu. i really wanted to try everything but decided on:

- grilled scallop 2pcs, with garlic butter and saikyo miso sauce: this dish was absolutely delicious. the scallops were cooked perfectly and the sauce was to die for.
- sweet corn 'kakiage' fritter with green tea salt: a tasty snack to have in between dishes. the consistency of the batter reminded me of tempura.
- regular sashimi set: the serving size was quite small as the fish was cut in relatively small sizes. the quality of the sashimi was standard restaurant quality.
- searedsushiset: this dish lacked in flavour as the rice was not flavoured enough and the fish was not seared enough. this may be their style of aburisushibut for me i prefer a little more flavour.
- jfc: this dish was a strange east meets west fusion. the chicken was moist but it could've been more crispy and it needed a little more salt. underneath is their homemade tartar sauce which didn't compliment the dish very well.
- vanilla creme brulee: the sugar on top was caramelised too far so it was too bitter. however, the custard underneath was perfect.
- green tea ice cream: your standard green tea ice cream.

overall, the food was okay, i just expected a little more.

had really high hopes but turned out to be one of the worst dining experience in australia, for the price. we chose the set menu but probably should've gone with a la cart. the portions were really small, and it wasn'tsushirice for thesushiso it all fell apart. definitely not worth it for $60 per head. the meat dishes were overly salty, but, the grilled barramundi was good. terrible sushi.

delicious, fresh japanese food with a slight european fusion twist. good service (though not standout, and this is possibly being picky), generous portions for the price you pay and byo (with corkage) or select from their drinks...all wrapped up with live jazz music. very very little to fault at all.

we absolutely loved the beef tataki, fried mushrooms, vegetariansushiand the crème brûlée!

will be back and will be bringing our friends!

food:
1. green tea soba salad - a bit too oily for me.
2. seared scallop carpaccio - really fresh, the sesame sauce matches really well with the scallop but it was a little oily.
3.sushiset chef's special - the nigiri were really fresh! i wished i order two of them! it had scallop, salmon, scallop, tuna and i think kingfish.
4. duck teriyaki - sauce is good but not cut thin enough which made it a bit too chewy.
5. roast wagyu beef - the homemade mustard honey sauce was really good but because the beef weren't sliced thin enough, it was too chewy as well me the sauce couldn't be absorbed as much.
6. special: matcha gateau - cake was made really well but because this type of cake is consider dry and needs ice cream, the ice cream given was not enough. the raspberry sauce was made right in terms of sweetness. other biscuit crumbs, sweetened nuts and cornflakes matched it quite well.
7. green tea was brewed nicely and refills were available constantly.

summary: get nigiri and seared scallop carpaccio :d

service:
- really friendly and attentive (they straight away gave me a chopstick when i dropped it).
- double checked on my booking on the day at 12pm.
- comes around with water and tea constantly.
- food came in order and came with minimal wait times.
- they don't try to kick you out after you have eaten.

atmosphere:
- they have live music everyday from 7:30 so it can get quite noisy. not a place for an intimate and deep conversation.
- good for couples who likes to try new japanese experience.
- seating can get a little squishy.
