food was really lovely. service was fabulous! the jazz band was a bit loud for decent conversations however gave it a verygoodvibe. we had the jazushi set menu. quite a lot of food to be honest. the highlights were definitely the carpaccio, green tea soba salad and camembert tempura. something pretty special and worth coming to! everything else was pretty standard. all the pictures shown are to share between 3 people.

went there this afternoon for lunch, which happens to be 5 mins away from my office :) we opted for tempura kinoki mushroom lunch sets, grilled oyster with miso cream sauce, camembert tempura and vanilla cream brulee. lunch sets came out with miso soup, agedashi tofu, salad and steam rice. the grilled oyster was beautiful (we even licked the cream sauce clean lol). camembert tempura was alright, the sauce was delicious, that we kept it until the end. the kinoki mushroom with creamy balsamic sauce + shredded parmesan, was d i v i n e...none of the dishes tasted the same..different flavours kept flowing harmoniously..the cream brulee was agoodending to this captivating experience :) will come back for their other dishes!!

the thing i like most about jazushi is the food. it sounds like it should be obvious... after all a restaurant servinggoodfood can hardly be ground-breaking! however in the drive to find something new and interesting often the food can be left behind, a reticent understudy, as ambience and innovation become the stars of the show. and jazushi certainly does provide ambience and innovation. jazz and sushi... a seemingly unlikely mix that works so well together you wonder why all sushi doesn't come with a trio playing in the background. the atmosphere in the front room where we are seated is modern yet cosy. it is a place to come with friends and share a meal. and at the heart of it all is a menu, simple and small, yet bursting with excitement. "what do you want to order", someone asks. "everything" is the only possible response. yet everything cannot be ordered... time, our wallets, and limited stomach capacity decree it cannot be so. so everyone picks

amazing experience overall!
we visited jazushi in the post-covid era which means unfortunately there was no live jazz music, but the ambience and food was absolutely stellar.
located minutes from surry hills light rail station, it is very convenient to get to this small and cozy place for a date night. we recommend booking beforehand as it is popular with agoodreason!
we started with edamame (spiced with sichimi salt) and the wagyu tataki - both amazing. would also recommend the rien pear sake to go with these. gyoza comes with the best sauce.
for the bigger plates we ordered soft shell crab and the kakuni (slow-braised pork belly), while the latter is very decadent and we absolutely loved it, it might not be everyone's thing! (unless you like layers of fat melting like we do!). in that case, the fried chicken will not disappoint.

would definitely come back to try to sashimi next time, hopefully there will be live music soon!

came here because of thegoodreviews and was disappointed, the food was overpriced for the quality and you were essentially paying for pretty pink lighting and a guy singing to jazz music on a piano in a corner.

the kingfish sushi was just a bowl of rice topped with kingfish that you had to diy, but it had plenty of rice and not enough fish and overall was just an unimpressive deconstructed sushi that was deconstructed for no reason.

while the scallops were nice in theory, they were overly oily and lacking much flavour.

the best dish of the night were the buttered prawns, although again they were way too oily, the prawn heads hadgoodflavour when bitten though.

we couldn’t make it to dessert

just so so. we found it online as it is reputable . but actually, the food is too salty. and served really slowly. only 4 dished, it took us 90mins. not asgoodas it scored.

delicious japanese fusion and yet to find a dish that disappoints. always check the specials, as thre are sometimes gems there - we had a wagyu tartare which was amazing!tempura camembert is asgoodas it sounds, soft shell crab roll is a staple a these modern western style japanese places - and this one doesn't disappoint, and the carpaccio wasgoodenough for our table to order another serve!

i've been to this restaurant a couple of times. at first i thought it's a small place but they have upstairs too. we ordered some sushi, sashimi and other small dishes. the sushi they served was westernised so it's disappointing. food is slightly above average. the atmosphere is quite nice so it's agoodplace for a date.

how businesss are managing to survive with all that light rail work going on in devonshire street is a mystery! what a mess. i hope it will get cleared up soon so they can get back to their regular trade (and new trade brought by light rail?). jazushi is an institution. in the tough surry hills market, it’s been around for yonks.goodfor them. they do a mix of contemporary interpretations of japanese food… and the classics.

this is another japanese gem in town.

thegood- the jazushi fried chicken is awesome. i am addicted to their special sauce, which i suspect that they added egg yolk and yuzu. the green tea noodle salad was refreshing too.

the bad - eating the corn fritters appeared to be drinking oil - literally. and the gyoza tasted more processed than fresh even though the texture is just nice - not too hard like yulli's or nourishing quarter.

delicious, fresh japanese food with a slight european fusion twist.goodservice (though not standout, and this is possibly being picky), generous portions for the price you pay and byo (with corkage) or select from their drinks...all wrapped up with live jazz music. very very little to fault at all.

we absolutely loved the beef tataki, fried mushrooms, vegetarian sushi and the crème brûlée!

will be back and will be bringing our friends!

food:
1. green tea soba salad - a bit too oily for me.
2. seared scallop carpaccio - really fresh, the sesame sauce matches really well with the scallop but it was a little oily.
3. sushi set chef's special - the nigiri were really fresh! i wished i order two of them! it had scallop, salmon, scallop, tuna and i think kingfish.
4. duck teriyaki - sauce isgoodbut not cut thin enough which made it a bit too chewy.
5. roast wagyu beef - the homemade mustard honey sauce was reallygoodbut because the beef weren't sliced thin enough, it was too chewy as well me the sauce couldn't be absorbed as much.
6. special: matcha gateau - cake was made really well but because this type of cake is consider dry and needs ice cream, the ice cream given was not enough. the raspberry sauce was made right in terms of sweetness. other biscuit crumbs, sweetened nuts and cornflakes matched it quite well.
7. green tea was brewed nicely and refills were available constantly.

summary: get nigiri and seared scallop carpaccio :d

service:
- really friendly and attentive (they straight away gave me a chopstick when i dropped it).
- double checked on my booking on the day at 12pm.
- comes around with water and tea constantly.
- food came in order and came with minimal wait times.
- they don't try to kick you out after you have eaten.

atmosphere:
- they have live music everyday from 7:30 so it can get quite noisy. not a place for an intimate and deep conversation.
-goodfor couples who likes to try new japanese experience.
- seating can get a little squishy.

saw the 4.2 rating on zomato and had to try this place. so we booked this place for my friend's birthday requesting for "happy birthday ..." on the dessert as a surprise but they forgot :(

we got the set menu and although the food was nice the portions were tiny. combined with this we waited almost 2.5hrs for all the food to come out, so by the time we had our last dish we were still starving.

the service was average but less attentive than i'd like it to be, this was probably because we were seated upstairs so there were less staff

overall, goodfood but no wow factor especially for the price.
