jardin nelson is one of my favourite restaurants in montreal. the food is good, but mostly i like the ambience of the open air courtyard with the different terrace levels and plants, along with the live jazz music.
i went there for dinner with a colleague who had not been before. we got there just before 6 pm and we had to wait in line about 20 minutes for a table. it was worth the wait.
we started the meal by splitting an order of their breaded calamari, and both of us agreed that it was one of the better calamari dishes we had ever had. the breading was a light golden brown and had a light crispness, and the coating flavour was mild, so as to not overwhelm the calamari. the temperature of the calamari inside was just where it needed to be, so that each bite was a delightful chew.
for my main course i chose the florentine crêpe. the crepe batter was buckwheat and hemp; a pleasant earthiness. the filling was the traditional florentine ham and spinach, along with bechamel sauce, parmesan and brie. delightful upscale ham and cheese!
