nice spot to dine in.. great place to sit and chat. the portions are huge, not a problem to split, unless you're really hungry. decent wine list, and the " not your ordinary mac and cheese" is really spectacular.

a couple's getaway. if you are looking for a nice place in town to take someone on a date, j.alexander's definitely fits the bill. it has a really beautiful setting and the dimmed lighting gives it a real romantic touch. as far as the food goes, i love the filet mignon, which is probably the most reasonably priced one in town for the taste. their grilled and fried shrimp entrees are very tasty as well. the complementary croissants have a nice, light flakiness to them and are a great filler if you are not quite full and don't desire dessert . the staff are very friendly, and the waiters and waitresses are top notch. overall, good food with a memorable dining experience.

food and service were top quality. atmosphere is romantic while any attire is acceptable. a little expensive but the experience was well worth it. we will visit again.

although it is a pleasant atmosphere, the food was mediocre and heavy. the lemonade was a weird blend of sodas with lemon concentrate and absurd amounts of sugar. if you are looking to eat good american food go elsewhere.

is this houston's long lost twin?. this place is like a replica of houston's or is it vice versa? either way, the food is good and consistent-i've never had a bad experience there, but lately ( i guess with the recession :-)) i've noticed the portion size dwindle and am a little upset that the steak maui (and most other entree's) is no longer served with a salad. also, the bread (yes, there's bread) is yummy...when you can get some! they never bring it automatically and even when you ask, the response is like "ok, let me find out if we have any" but back to the houston's comparison...it's kinda creepy, the ambience and environment are exactly the same, the menu seems exactly the same (houston's hawaiian=steak maui?), but there's something that i just love a little bit more about houston's than j.'s. maybe it's that eating at j.'s with pretentious b.r. folks who want to be seen is so different than being at the old houston's on st.charles in new orleans! jmo, i'm from b.r. by the way.

incredible tastes, decent prices. our only problem is ordering too much food, as the servings are huge!

good place, although slightly overpriced. the first time i visited i was with a group of 5 ladies. the hostess was rude to us from the start, and said it would be 30-40 minutes for a table to become available. we said we would wait.

45 minutes goes by and we check to see if a table has gone available. she sighs and rolls her eyes and tells us no, and goes back to texting on her phone.

an hour goes by and we check again. no luck.

finally, after an hour and fifteen minutes, a manager comes by and asks us if everything's okay, because he had seen us sitting there for a long time. we told him that we had been waiting that long. he apologized to us many times, and let us sit outside in the lounge with appetizers and drinks on the house until we were ready.

once we got seated and ordered, the food was delicious. i ordered the rotisserie chicken cobb salad and it was perfection. the ladies and i all shared an order of the fries, which are not to be missed!

the second time i visited a lunchtime and got to sit outside and enjoy the lovely spring weather. i ordered the prime rib sandwich with fries and it was absolutely fantastic. perfectly cooked prime rib, and the fries were delicious dipped in the au jus sauce.

overall, this is a cool looking place to have a meal, but i think it is a little overpriced for the food.

the prime rib from j. alexander's is absolutely awesome!! each bite melts in your mouth and the horseradish dipping sauce is perfect. don't let them sear it though. yes, it looks better seared but it loses some of the tenderness.

"review" by frank erythema may 29, 2009 - likes it - this establishment is the result of one of the owners of houston's in atlanta, starting his own in chattanooga. i like both of them, and find j's to have great atmosphere especially for after work dining. they have an excellent bar menu, wine menu, food menu. my favorite is alex's salad with either of their vinaigrette dressings, and their "old fashioned cheeseburger" or salmon sandwich. their isreali couscous (kuskus), and seasonal red cabbage are also my favorites. and they make one of the best "black russian" drinks i've had. it can last through an entier meal! combined with an excellent wait staff, this place is 'go to' place any day, but especially a friday evening after work!

enjoyed an excellent dinner while traveling. stayed in the bar area and was greated with a smile by the hostess when i entered the restaurant. evan was my bartender and did a wonderful job of suggesting dishes and wine by the glass. i enjoyed the cesar salad although it had too much dressing and i chose not to finish it. evan suggested the filet skewers and they were as excellent as he described. i would suggest this restaurant to anyone.

yes, its corporate.... and i was prepared to hate it when my cousin decided thats where she wanted to go for her birthday dinner...
but i wasnt disappointed at all.
yes, its a bit expensive, but it makes up for it by ambience. and good service.
the only thing i did not like was their "absolutely no reservations taken" policy.
as a party of 10, on a saturday night we were told the wait would be 2 hours if we wanted to sit together...and if we could sit apart it would be 45 minutes.
being in the business i understand that a first come first serve policy does work well...but for the convenience of larger parties celebrating a special occasion like ours it would be nice to have a table ready at a specific time.

it's all good. j. alexander's has the best service of any resturant in baton rouge. their salads are my favorite but i have eaten several items on the menu and i have not had a bad experience yet.
