enter theitalianstore... i had heard mucho about this place as far back as my times as a collegiate youth...how does one make a sandwich beautiful for a glamour shot (also while trying so hard to exhibit restraint towards devouring it)? the world will never know. but check out that beauty above. it’s the capri – anitalian“philadelphia-style” sub featuring proscuitto, genoa salami, provolone cheese and spiced capacola ham. boo-yeah, son!

when my friend recommended that we eat lunch at a local sandwich shop called “theitalianstore”, i was agreeable. i’m always game for a good sandwich. what i wasn’t expecting was that this place would be so popular that we’d have a 20 minute wait.  this is what we saw when we walked in: so many people! rather than being aggravated or deterred, this only made me want the food more. if some littleitaliangrocery in arlington is going to have over 30 people waiting for sandwiches and pizza at any given time, i want to know why.

disgusted. i have been coming to theitalianstore since july 2003. i love the place. however, since returning to northern virginia in 2013, theitalianstore has gone downhill. two reasons. customer service is terrible. are the employees away in one big bad mood all damn day? crack a smile, laugh, maybe say "hello.". it would not hurt if the 15 year olds making my sandwich would actually look up and acknowledge the guy who is supporting their job. today, a man ordered a turkey sub at around 5pm. the kid taking the order was so obnoxious i wanted to walk out.

i would have except i was starving and their food is pretty good. that brings me to my second point. the subs in 2003 2ere twice the size what they are now. what the hell? any standards? and what gives with the nasty cashiers? why is a place that is obviously making a nice profit and not working on the margin employ such jerk-off help?

i am taking a year off to go to face and cornucopia.

get your act together and i'll come back. this is just friendly advice to a once great institution. we all lose our way in life. please turn on your gps.

theitalianstore has good ny style pizza and you can get whatever they happen to have around by the slice. the people at the pizza counter tend to not have the best people skills here, which is odd, because the people making hoagies are personable. this is a good place for the thin crust, charred bottom style of pizza, but i rarely order pizza here because there philly hoagies are amazing. even the vegetarian hoagie is great. this place does not really have seating; there are a few tables outside.

simply the best cold cut subs in the dc area. theitalianstore is a must stop, if you are craving anitalianstyle cold cut sub,
there is always a line, but it is so worth it. though the line may seem endless, the staff is super efficient, and you'll have your sub in 5 minutes. i would suggest, the milan or the romano plus a pack of altoids for desert. :-)

great stuff!

best nyc styleitalianin dc area. i'm from northern nj - soprano's country - anitalianfood eden. this place has the best pizza and subs in the dc area. period. i typically go with the milano on a hard roll with l/t/vinegar, oil, hot and sweet peppers. its almost strictly take out; there are a few cafe tables outside when the weather's nice. be sure and telephone your order in ahead of time!! even with that, expect to wait for your food. pay for your order when you check in with the cashier, so you can dash when the pizza comes out.
outstanding place.

milano!. back in the day, i would always order a milano. if you get a sub here, you have, absoultely have to get a sub on a hard roll. if you get the soft, it just isn't the same.

they have excellentitaliansubs here. whether you get the milano or anything else, they are always first rate.

the pizza is always good too. last time i had it was around new years when i was home and it tasted as good as ever. its not super thin like a nyc, but its still pretty thin. the pizza also has an amazing crust. that crust is great.

one suggestion - call ahead whether it be for subs or pizza. the place is always, always crowded. if you can call ahead and pick up 'twill save you a bunch of time.

this hearty lunch option is bursting withitalianmeats and cheeses served on either a hard or soft roll (i recommend the latter) dressed with oil, lettuce, onions, and hot and/or sweet peppers. located in a strip mall off of lee highway in arlington, theitalianstore specializes in philadelphia-styleitaliansubs as well as pizzas, fresh pasta sauces, and a variety of otheritalianstaples. and while the outside is non-descript, the word has been out for some time that this is pretty much the only place to go in arlington for sandwiches and pizza of this quality, so expect large crowds. and true to itsitalianroots, expect plenty of chaos, disorganization, and long waits -- all of which the consultant in me really wants to consult with management to improve. also, there is a no doubt that the grocery selections are grossly overpriced. first tip: if you are
