for the letter i - the alphabet list is a bit lacking - so i decided to take this one into my own hands and chose island frydays in clifton as the choice. it's on short vine next to the firehouse and you can't miss it. seriously - how could you miss that yellow? here's a quick look at their menu - and yes - they have goat and oxtail. here's a full menu . also - fun drinks! i was dying for a regular boring coke but wish i'd tried the kola champagne and how can you not drink something called ting?! i got the small jerk chicken dinner - yes - that's the small ($8). that'sriceand beans (or you could choose yellow rice), steamed vegetables, chicken (choose dark or light) and plantains. zomg. de. lish. seriously - it was fantastic. they put some of the gravy on therice- even better. it was sweet & spicy. the steamed vegetables were even good! the plantains - perfect. love love love this place! i also got one of their "patties" - they have beef, chicken and veggie ($2) - i got veggie...bu

island fridays food review.

this is my second time eating here, but my first time reviewing on the blog. it was one of the first cold days in cinci this year, and i was craving something warm and cozy for lunch. i asked the woman what she recommended and she said the chicken stew. i ordered that overricewith plaintains. it was so different from what i would have normally eaten for lunch. the spice was nice without being overwhelming and the chicken was very tender. i wasn’t a fan of the cabbage, but thericewas a great complement to the stew. i did not enjoy the plaintains, which is normally one of my favorite parts. they were a bit too mushy. i want a nice sear or crunch to them. it makes all the difference for me. overall it was good food, and i enjoyed it.

an excellent place to eat. my wife and i recently came back from a visit to st. maarten, where we ate much local island food. unfortunately, there are not many places like it here in the states. or so we thought. i stumbled upon island frydays, by accident, but when i smelled the familiar smells and saw the large grill out front (called lolo's in the caribbean) i was excited. as soon as the man on the grill gave me a sample of his chicken, i was sold. this place is incredible. they serve all sorts of wonderful items, but i was most excited for the jerk chicken, their fried plantains, andricewith gravy. i paired that with another island favorite, a jamaican ginger beer, and was in heaven. you can dine indoor or outdoor, and the friendly service, and great prices make this a must try in cincinnati.

excellent place!. i sought out island frydays to get a taste of caribbean, and it really delivered. my friend suggested trying the beef pattie and coco bread sandwich after having them from ny street vendors, but i wanted chicken too. the cute co-worker suggested the jerk chicken as the best of the chicken dishes, and man was she right. it had an excellent grilled flavor with a great blend of spices. as my friend put it, it was how you want your chicken to taste when you grill it yourself. the man who put our order together asked if i wanted white or dark. i said both and was delighted to see him produce a huge meat cleaver and get to work chopping up large pieces of chicken. it came with really good steamed cabbage and veggies, delicious fried plantains (which we think may have been sauteed) that were very sweet - like a delicious sweet potato, and somericewith beans in it. when asked if i wanted some of the chicken gravy on the rice, i said yeah, lets try half. the half that got it blew away the half that didn't. it was an au jus that really gave thericeand beans a whole new flavor element, and helped disperse the dry feeling you can get fromricesometimes. i'll always get it like this from now on. and for $8, it was a very large portion.

then i realized i also ordered the pattie and coco bread. i had to at least take a few bites before taking the rest home. it was great. the patties are normally fried, but theirs were still flaky and dry, and not heavy in the slightest, so i think they may have been baked, which is great. the coco bread was soft and sweet. it reminded me a lot of hawaiian bread, but different. i loved the place, and i will definitely be back.
