if you’re up for a food adventure, island frydays is theplaceto go!  this restaurant, which serves jamaican and caribbean food, makes up in flavor what it lacks in atmosphere.  instead of fancy plates, a wait staff, and ambiance, it’s self-ordering, takeout containers, and no frills dining.  sometimes, that’s exactly what a girl wants!

yum!. ok, so i was a bit apprehensive to try island frydays because the last time i had carribean food (from another establishment) it was very spicy. my first impression, theplaceis very clean, the staff is very friendly and helpful, and there's a nice little crowd of customers. then i tasted the food; wonderful! everything obviously made from scratch by a very talented cook! don't be afraid to try it; perfect amount of spice and they give you huge portions. the kids were even fighting over the leftovers. a+.

an excellentplaceto eat. my wife and i recently came back from a visit to st. maarten, where we ate much local island food. unfortunately, there are not many places like it here in the states. or so we thought. i stumbled upon island frydays, by accident, but when i smelled the familiar smells and saw the large grill out front (called lolo's in the caribbean) i was excited. as soon as the man on the grill gave me a sample of his chicken, i was sold. thisplaceis incredible. they serve all sorts of wonderful items, but i was most excited for the jerk chicken, their fried plantains, and rice with gravy. i paired that with another island favorite, a jamaican ginger beer, and was in heaven. you can dine indoor or outdoor, and the friendly service, and great prices make this a must try in cincinnati.

great low keyplacewith change of pace food. this is a local joint, basic but happy interior space... kind of very casual grab a bite or get it to go place. guys behind the counter were very nice and helpful as we were first timers.

i got the small curry chicken and it was more than big enough for me, but i am not one to gorge on food. enjoyed the flavor but did find many small chips of bones in it, so i would not feed it to a smaller child.

would definitely return and check out other menu items. price was great. good filling meal for not a lot of money.

sorry, i don't get it.. lots of positive reviews for this place, and i can't for the life of me figure out why. the gold standard for caribbean food for me is aplacecalled eats in atlanta. i can only say they aren't losing any sleep over places like this.
went in on a friday between 6 and 7. not only was nothing ready, there was a guy there who had been waiting for close to an hour. they don't take your order and give you a number or anything. they just tell you it's not ready and then you kind of hang around while other people who want something they do have get waited on. extremely loose and disorganized, like they never worked in a restaurant before.
finally got the food. i got a large jerk chicken plate and my wife got a small. get the small - there's virtually no difference for the extra money. there's the option of regular or yellow rice, which they don't tell you about when you order. and the option of gravy (or grease, rather) on the rice. oh, and white meat or dark meat although i asked for a mix and could not find any dark in there at all.
quality-wise, whoever said this is hot/spicy must have really sensitive taste buds. one to ten scale, i'd say 3. and that's generous. again, portions were miniscule, but could be due to the fact that it took so long that they were afraid of running out again. my wife's portion was pink inside, so for all that time it still wasn't cooked all the way through.
i'd also note that the way it's chopped up you would probably be well advised to take someone along who knows the heimlich maneuver since the chance of swallowing a bone is pretty high.
i can't say it's the worst meal i ever had. i've had some really bad ones. but i can't see any reason to ever go back to this place. i mean, you could go to kroger and get an whole chicken for less than what they charge for this, and while it wouldn't be fantastic, the quality and value would still beat this by a long shot. i'd have rather gone to chipotle.
thumbs down, big time.

great hidden gem. theplaceis a little hole in the wall... the food was great, and the servers were sweet. very laid back. not many people in the restaurant, but there seemed to be a lot of take out patrons coming and going. sampled a few items on the menu, and i have no complaints about anything. i can't wait to get back here soon and try the rest of the menu! i suggest going with someone who is willing to try new foods so you can get a variety.

jamaican paradise. this restaurant was found by accident. lured to the domino's pizzaplaceacross the street on vine, i spotted the flamboyant jamaican-inspired design of this newly-opened restaurant. i arrived at 11:30, and there were no other people in the restaurant. however, the friendly hostess guided my choices for take-out, and i tried the jerk-chicken. it is very well done, quite toned-down in spiceyness compared to the island version. the sides are very well done, including the plantain, steamed vegetables (very fresh and some of the best i have had!), red beans and rice, and very cheesey macaroni and cheese. i am returning to try the jerk-red snapper that is available only fridays and saturdays. i found out that jerk-fish was prepared on weekends during my wait, as 4 other people entered the restaurant while i was waiting and asked for it. very generous portions, and very high quality fast-food, right on the doorstep of the university of cincinnati!
