good happy hour pick. this is agoodplace to stop for happy hour if you're down powell. the beer is great, so much to choose from just among their own brews. as for the food, it's what you would expect. sandwiches, salads, etc., and what i've had so far was fairly ho hum. the wings however are fairly tasty and complement the beer nicely. i have also heardgoodthings about the pizza , so i'll have to give that a try next time.

organic brew and killer food. went here on their opening night in march which was a big mistake, but only because the place was mobbed....and forgoodreason. the beer here is exceptional. hoppy ipa's, coffee flavored seven grain stout that left me dizzy wanting more, and a flavorful pale ale. we had to leave because the wait was over an hour long, but we managed to squeeze up to the bar and get a beer before we left. the manager overheard our conversation while we discussed leaving and coming back on another day because we were too hungry to wait. to our surprise and delight, he brought each of us a free slice of pizza as an apology for the long wait. are you kidding?goodcustomer service and free pizza?...oh yeah, we were going to come back here for sure.

so, we went back last week and were seated within 20 minutes and had agoodexperience. the place is decorated with an odd mixture of old timber from the original building, newer wood accents, a funky metal staircase, and bicycle frames strung together with wire overhanging the main bar. sounds weird but somehow this all works well together and feels very "portland funky".

the beer menu "seems" larger than the food menu, but that's just because the impressive variety of beer is more impressive the variety of choices on the food menu. i'm not complaining! the menu has all the usual pub suspects: soup, salad, burgers, sausage, and pizza. the difference is that the food here seems to be typical pub grub on steroids. huge burgers, sausage that sticks out of both sides of the bun, and amazinglygoodpizza (given it is made in a brewub). we thoroughly enjoyed everything here including the enthusiastic and friendly service. we also appreciated getting out of there for less than fifty bucks for all we ate and drank.

from the greeter at the door, to the bartenter, and then our server...the people at hopworks actually seem to enjoy themselves, and genuinely like working here. a refreshing change from the snarly or unconsious service we get at other places.

all in all, i give this place a big thumbs-up and look forward to our next visit.

the atmosphere is always fun. they havegoodcider. but it's def not all it's cracked up to be. don't order a power salad, because it's such a waste of $$. you gotta go classic pub food to get your money worth at the hub. and the garlic fries will leave you tasting garlic for a full 24 hours (heads up)

where is the pretzel?. all tied up i suppose.

they can and will do better but for the one trip here i was completely underwhelmed. tasted two brews and had two others. none really distinct for me but again, will give another try.

way too many kids here which is agoodand bad thing i suppose.

ordered some of the pub pretzels and the waiter checked back after about 20 minutes and i saw him key them in over at his station. another 15 minutes go by and no pretzel....finally they show but alas we are leaving now. he boxed them up and took them off but microwaved pretzels are notgoodtravelers.

kid's pbj and apples was also underwhelming with brown apple slices and hard seeded bread.

so for now i will drink my big black cow and get out of here!

beer, burgers, kids. on a sunday at 5 in the evening, this place was busy as it has been every time we've stopped by for beer and food. the restaurant side is very family friendly so expect there to be lots of kids. service was friendly and helpful, no complaints there. after picking out beers and ordering we looked over the menu. i choose a house salad for $5 and added chicken for another $3. it was just the right size for a light appetite but the chicken might have been a little more amble for the money. the other two meals were burgers and fried and they were great with a surprise of pineapple on the spicy one. we had homemade chocolate chip cookies each for dessert because that was the only thing that didn't come with ice cream and they were just a little warm and nice. when our bill came, we were a little surprised again that the goblet of "imperial" beer was $7.50 while the ales were $3.75 each and they were 16 ozs. i don't mind paying elsewhere, as much as $4.50 for a pint ofgoodmicrobrew, but i tasted the imperial and it wasn't worth the price. pay attention to the big board in the bar side for prices of their special beers.

i recently made a trip to portland, oregon for a wedding. this trip qualified as the annual reunion of a bunch of beer friends from around the country (the europeans, save the ex-pat groom, couldn't make it), so what better way to hang out than to visit a bunch of beer places in one of the best beer cities in the entire country? hopworks urban brewery, known as hopworks or, more simply, hub, stands as a rather unusual brewing entity: the organic brewpub. they embrace the environmental responsibility of so much of portland, from the organic angle to the embracing of bicycles as transportation - those are bicycle racks all the way around the patio. why, we don't mind if we do! while hub handles a full slate ofgoodpub food, we'd already enjoyed the delicious sandwiches at laurelhurst market (post to come, eventually), so we settled in for a few beers in a half-empty space at 2:30 in the afternoon. happy hour didn't start till 3:00, but we figured we'd be there a while. we each ordered p

great atmosphere - boring food. hopworks urban brewery has a lot going for it. the interior is interesting with lots of exposed beams and metal and wood nooks. there is a large parking lot and two floors of tables to accommodate guests. there are two children's areas with lots of toys to entertain the younger set. there are a variety of home brewed beers to choose from including a stout i particularly enjoyed. it is family friendly, but also agoodspace to hang out with your pals and drink. the food though does not live up to everything else. they have pizzas, sandwiches, and salads. the soft pretzel appetizer was good, though not much to it. the wings are served on fries, but neither stands out as particularly appealing. the pear and blue-cheese salad was tasty. in general there's nothing wrong with any of the entrees or appetizers, they just don't live up to everything else. go to hub for a beer or have a fun time hanging out with friends or family, just don't expect your taste-buds to be delighted.
