have been wanting to try this place for a while. they were pretty busy to my surprise but we were seated right away. our waitress was very friendly and welcoming. i had fried green tomatoes that were ok they were huge and fresh just a bit under seasoned. i ordered the pork chop which was very good a seasoned to perfection thegritsand eggs were typical. my friend tried shrimp po boy n fries. again the po boy was good but the fries were house cut potatoes and toooo thick. not seasoned at all. lastly my guy ordered a restaurant famous dish that consists of two huge pancakes with 4 sausage patties between them topped with chicken tenders with sausage gravy on top. this plate is big enough for two n was verryyy good. everything was ok and service was great but probably won't visit anytime soon just because everything was just ok

home grown? how good!. this place always seems booming and crowded on weekends. so we went on a monday when it was just busy and there was no wait.

servers were friendly and very earnest (i’ve had enough of the hipster-cool service who are more into being laid back than they are moving faster for good service.)

we had the comfy chicken biscuit which was a few pieces of fried chicken breast on an open-faced biscuit then covered in sausage gravy. this is the kind of dish that i wouldn’t normally trust. my arteries just cringe at the thought of it. but the meal was delicious. we also had the breakfast tacos filled with chorizo and egg. that was also quite nice. a side ofgritswas really good.

home grown has a fun and friendly vibe. i would happily return for another great breakfast.

don't miss this one. it's a winner!!. this was a first visit for the dh and myself. when we arrived, we saw that business was booming, as there was a line, with a steady flow of customers arriving. although there was a wait, it was short (approx. 15 minutes). the dh had delicious coffee (please note that you need to add the coffee to your order. it is not free.) while we waited and took in the atmosphere, which was fun. the décor was eclectic and also fun to look at. when we were seated; we, each, ordered: basic breakfast two eggs, scrambled, with crispy bacon, 1 creamygrits& 1 cheese grits, and a biscuit + 1 order of ham, hot tea, glass of milk & 2 waters.
everything came quickly and hot. oh, my, was it ever good! the ham was to die for - and we wished we had gotten an extra order because i took half of his! thegritswere as creamy as promised, the eggs were perfect, as was the biscuits & everything else. we had nothing negative to say.
after we finished, we checked out the "sew thrifty 5 & dime" room, where there were more diners, musical entertainment, and an area where antiques & collectibles are sold at a reasonable price.
well worth the visit, and we will be back!
i forgot to give props to our server. he was busy, but made us feel welcome and ensured that our order to correct.

this place is still fantastic. excellent breakfast for $6 includes 2-3 eggs, delicious bacon, and the best cheesegritsi've ever had. don't add any salt before you try them: they are already perfect. love the atmosphere and decor, with vintage dishes and napkin holders. friendly staff. would come here all the time if i lived closer.

great little place. have been wanting to try this place since i read barney's review. expected to find a packed house, but we got seated right away. my friend had a great looking stack of pancakes, while i went for a veggie plate with collards, lady peas and jalapeno slaw. everything was fresh and delicious. only complaint is that the greens had no meat seasoning to them, but i believe they have a big vegetarian customer base, so it's excusable. can't wait to come back for breakfast. this is a really neat place with a great vibe. very friendly service.

might be the bestgritsi've ever had.. i had the vegetarian biscuits and gravy and and order of grits. the biscuits and gravy had a vinegar taste i didn't care for. thegritswere perfect. cheesy and smooth. i received a text from a friend telling me to order a pancake but it was too late! we weren't there during peak hours and our server was friendly but not attentive.

just dined at home grown this morning, and believe me it was worth the wait. the ever so hip wait staff quickly filled my cup of coffee all while looking stylish in the latest urban outfitters attire. the food came out fast for scuba full diner and the shrimp andgritsrecommended by the server were suburb, with a chili powder based bbq sauce and creamy grits. come during the week early, this place packs it out.

cosign: it really is awesome. i'll be honest, i only decided to try this place out because of barney's previous review, and i was wowed just as he was. the staff was super nice from the moment i walked in the door. i tried the cheesegritswith chili and two eggs on top and from the first bite, i knew i'd found my new favorite breakfast restaurant (sorry thumbs up). i have a hard time understanding how this place hasn't caught on in the city, but i won't make a fuss about it. i'll just enjoy the minimal wait and the awesome food with a smile!

instant favorite. okay. i eat out a lot, no surprises there. very rarely on a first trip, especially for breakfast, do i walk away so totally loving a place.
stopped in this morning as they opened. very nice little place, plenty of parking, very friendly folks who know about their food and enjoy talking about it (i do not take the last part for granted).
i had to go with the most unusual thing on the menu, the b.e.s.t french toast (bacon, spinach, and tomato between 2 pieces of french toast... i went with the optional egg to see if this was as good as my server said).
it was as good as my server said. the french toast was perfect, fluffy and not heavy. the bacon was crisp, the tomato was juicy and sweet, the spinach perfectly fresh, and the egg(s) (they might have snuck an extra one in there... not sure) were cooked exactly as requested...nicely runny. they told me that some folks can pick this thing up, but a man's got to know his limitations and i tackled it with a knife and fork (adding a little syrup here and there). simply the best breakfast i've had out for a while. incredible mix of sharp fresh flavors with every component done perfectly. should also point out, by the way, that the side of cheesegritswere also above average, nicely smooth and cheesy, not too runny, not too dry.
as i say in my title, this is an instant favorite and i'll be back soon. if i had any more room, i would have tried the special sweetgritspie... now doesn't that sound intriguing?!?

next day update: went back for lunch and had the vegetarian peach sloppy joe that was oh-so-good, though seemed like a real sloppy joe and not sure what i was eating if not cow. to go with that, got an order of the fried green tomato's that were hot crispy and not greasy with a great horseradish sauce that gave them a nice little punch. end to end another fantastic meal at this great little place!

update 10/2010: have lost track of how many times i've been here, but had another great breakfast this morning. everyone here is super nice and the food continues to be straight forward, tasty, and reasonably priced.
