ritual. every saturday, freshly battered from the wonderfully soul crushing work week i escape to an as freshly battered chicken breast atop doughy biscuits and blanketed with a thick sausage gravy. a breakfast good enough to turn an agent of chaos into a creature of habit.

tasty place. hubs says theirs is the best gravy he’s ever had. i really liked the cheesy grits. art and thrift shop were fun to look at while we waited (briefly) for our food.

have been wanting to try this place for a while. they were pretty busy to my surprise but we were seated right away. our waitress was very friendly and welcoming. i had fried green tomatoes that were ok they were huge and fresh just a bit under seasoned. i ordered the pork chop which was very good a seasoned to perfection the grits and eggs were typical. my friend tried shrimp po boy n fries. again the po boy was good but the fries were house cut potatoes and toooo thick. not seasoned at all. lastly my guy ordered a restaurant famous dish that consists of two huge pancakes with 4 sausage patties between them topped with chicken tenders with sausage gravy on top. this plate is big enough for two n was verryyy good. everything was ok and service was great but probably won't visit anytime soon just because everything was just ok

showed up for lunch close to closing time, thought about the hamburgers. then i inquired about the pot roast asking if it was possibly gluten free, with the advice of my excellent server ordered the pot roast, it was truly amazing and i will definitely make tracks back there as soon as possible.

the parking lot should be your first clue. it's packed, which typically signals good food. it didn't disappoint.

i'll admit that i typically question places that look like holes in the wall. the outside of the place looks like it's just had a little bit of paint over the years and not much else. inside, the uneven floors and patched ceiling look a little suspect. but ya know... what doesn't get put into making the place look pompous gets placed into the food. because the food is truly wonderful.

we waited only 22 minutes into our estimated 30-40 minutes before being seated. drinks were quick. it took about 8-10 minutes to get our orders placed, but that was more than reasonable considering how busy the place was.

i sampled a number of dishes i have to give a big recommendation to the pulled pork sandwich, comfy chicken biscuit, fried steak and the breakfast tacos. they're all seriously good eats! i kind of wish there was more of a soft drink selection because that's my thing. but there are plenty of other drinks from which to choose!

i can't really find anything negative. if you're like me and might pass up a place based upon looks alone, you should seriously reconsider. yeah the seats may have a few tears. yeah the floor hasn't been buffed in ages. but it's a little piece of small-town, home grown america in the big city.

if you're visiting atlanta, you must come here to eat at least once.

'we have to eat at home grown' was what my fiancé said to me on our visit to atlanta. when we arrived there was no parking, which is always a good sign. the wait wasn't too bad but they were def. packed. we got the comfy chicken biscuit and the best french toast sandwich, both where amazing! we will be back the next time we visit atl.

absolutely outstanding!!! seriously. so glad i came here. i ordered the comfy chicken biscuit which is a very well seasoned fried chicken cutlet on a biscuit smothered with sausage gravy. my daughter and date shared the pancake stack, 3 pancakes that were the size of a hubcap......each they were soft and fluffy which is amazing considering their size and the eggs were some of the best i've ever had at a restaurant. you want a great breakfast.........then trust......you want home grown.

after glancing through the menu, i decided to order their famous comfy chicken biscuit because who doesn't love a good chicken biscuit smothered in sausage gravy?! however, as i took my first bite, i was immediately disappointed in it for a number of reasons. the biscuit was cold, the fried chicken was mostly breading and the sausage gravy was way too salty! i mean, i could almost feel my blood pressure skyrocketing because it tasted as if an entire container of salt was dumped onto my plate. don't get me wrong though, the gravy was tasty and had all the right seasonings, but it could've definitely used 1/10th of the salt that was already in there. personally, this dish certainly didn't warrant the $10 price tag.

overall, i'm really disappointed in my experience at home grown and will probably not be returning any time soon in the near future. while i understand that it's an atlanta staple and is wildly popular, i refuse to buy into the hype just yet because of how upsetting both the food and service was on this particular visit. i may make another trip later on down the road, especially during lunch time, but i will say that atlanta has plenty of other restaurants worth dining at for brunch. here's to hoping that my next visit is 100% better than this one.

home grown? how good!. this place always seems booming and crowded on weekends. so we went on a monday when it was just busy and there was no wait.

servers were friendly and very earnest (i’ve had enough of the hipster-cool service who are more into being laid back than they are moving faster for good service.)

we had the comfy chicken biscuit which was a few pieces of fried chicken breast on an open-faced biscuit then covered in sausage gravy. this is the kind of dish that i wouldn’t normally trust. my arteries just cringe at the thought of it. but the meal was delicious. we also had the breakfast tacos filled with chorizo and egg. that was also quite nice. a side of grits was really good.

home grown has a fun and friendly vibe. i would happily return for another great breakfast.

1st time here- pretty good blast- great coffee. terrible neighborhood - beware parking! signs everywhere not to leave valuables in car! staff was friendly - floors need to be redone - kinda felt like a grunge hippy place- don't understand the #1 spot to eat - yesterday rise and dine much better food.
