just dined at home grown this morning, and believe me it was worth the wait. the ever so hip wait staff quickly filled my cup of coffee all while looking stylish in the latest urban outfitters attire. the food came out fast for scuba full diner and the shrimp and grits recommended by the server were suburb, with a chili powder based bbq sauce and creamy grits. come during the week early, this place packs it out.

cosign: it really is awesome. i'll be honest, i only decided to try this place out because of barney's previous review, and i was wowed just as he was. the staff was super nice from the moment i walked in the door. i tried the cheese grits with chili and two eggs on top and from the first bite, i knew i'd found my new favorite breakfast restaurant (sorry thumbs up). i have a hard time understanding how this place hasn't caught on in the city, but i won't make a fuss about it. i'll just enjoy the minimal wait and the awesome food with a smile!

my husband and i went to home grown for brunch on sunday. it was delicious. the service was friendly and even though it was very busy the wait wasnt bad at all. i would recommend this place for anyone who wants a good old fashioned diner breakfast. we'll definitely go back. :-d

oh my.... very, very good fresh food. i had the b.e.s.t and it was quite pleasing. the fried green tomatoes were some of the best i've ever had (maybe 2nd to busy bee). not impressed with the cheese grits; two forkfuls and i left the bowl. i'm going back for breakfast and lunch next week to try a few more things, namely the sloppy joe.

reborn southerner. my wife daughter and i have gone twice to this new breakfast/brunch spot on memorial in the building once occupied by "mammy's kitchen" . the staff were pleasant and helpful, listened to our questions and helped my 4 year old feel at home. i'm not "southern by grace" but by choice, and my heart swells for a good biscuit and sausage gravy. i have never had a better version of the dish. just spicy enough with rich flavor; not lumpy or plain floury. the pancakes are good and the breakfast sandwiches are so full ya gotta use a knife and fork. after the fist visit i wondered if it was a fluke. not the case here. i got the exact same meal and added an over easy egg and got some sausage on the side. i was beyond full. and again, the sausage gravy was award winning. we'll be going back. the owner has been quoted as saying the place was going to be open for later lunch and have country fried steak, fried chicken, collards, mashed potatoes, but it's only open 'till 3pm. if they do go with a later lunch/supper menu my family and i will be there ready for the delicious home grown flavors we've so recently come to enjoy. looking forward to the country fried steak. hint hint.

instant favorite. okay. i eat out a lot, no surprises there. very rarely on a first trip, especially for breakfast, do i walk away so totally loving a place.
stopped in this morning as they opened. very nice little place, plenty of parking, very friendly folks who know about their food and enjoy talking about it (i do not take the last part for granted).
i had to go with the most unusual thing on the menu, the b.e.s.t french toast (bacon, spinach, and tomato between 2 pieces of french toast... i went with the optional egg to see if this was as good as my server said).
it was as good as my server said. the french toast was perfect, fluffy and not heavy. the bacon was crisp, the tomato was juicy and sweet, the spinach perfectly fresh, and the egg(s) (they might have snuck an extra one in there... not sure) were cooked exactly as requested...nicely runny. they told me that some folks can pick this thing up, but a man's got to know his limitations and i tackled it with a knife and fork (adding a little syrup here and there). simply the best breakfast i've had out for a while. incredible mix of sharp fresh flavors with every component done perfectly. should also point out, by the way, that the side of cheese grits were also above average, nicely smooth and cheesy, not too runny, not too dry.
as i say in my title, this is an instant favorite and i'll be back soon. if i had any more room, i would have tried the special sweet grits pie... now doesn't that sound intriguing?!?

next day update: went back for lunch and had the vegetarian peach sloppy joe that was oh-so-good, though seemed like a real sloppy joe and not sure what i was eating if not cow. to go with that, got an order of the fried green tomato's that were hot crispy and not greasy with a great horseradish sauce that gave them a nice little punch. end to end another fantastic meal at this great little place!

update 10/2010: have lost track of how many times i've been here, but had another great breakfast this morning. everyone here is super nice and the food continues to be straight forward, tasty, and reasonably priced.
