hidden gem. walk through the doors to the right and up the stairs. that is where the hidden gem is! the hinterland bar. you can get a gourmet pizza for $10, fish tacos for $4 and some other delightful treats for a reasonable price. their beers are fantastic. i love the pale ale, ipa and octoberfest beers. they can also delight you with a fancy cocktail or a fine wine. the wine and the cocktails are the more expensive items, so be forewarned. my wife and i enjoy this place!

30 minutes for 2 sundaes? are you kidding me?!!?. if it was possible to give negative stars for a dining experience, this would be the first time i would do so.

this evening, 6 of us went to the farmer's market on broadway, followed by dinner @ hinterland. let me just say, in the interest of full disclosure, that 2 of the 6 were children.

in a reader's digest condensed version, here's the experience:

seated in the patio. 3 of 8 tables open after we're seated (that becomes important later) - all 2 tops and 4 tops.

excrutiatingly slow service. 15+ minutes to get drink orders in, 25 more to get the appetiizers to the table, another 30, after the appetizers are cleared, to get the entrees, which come in 3 waves for the 4 adults.

exceedingly bad service. had to go to the bar to get another round of drinks. not only no water refills, but my glass, when it was empty, was bussed off the table. this was between appetizers and entrees.

the coup de grace. when entress were finally served, ordered 2 sundaes to keep the 2 kids occupied. 30 minutes later (i kid you not), entress are finished. no sundaes. table is bussed. no sundaes. check is delivered (seriously, what restaurant delivers the check without 1) asking if you want: a)dessert; b)coffee; or c)after dinner drinks; and 2) brings the check before all the meal service is concluded! still, no sundaes.

it took, no joke, 30 minutes for them to plate 4 scoops of vanilla ice cream into 2 bowls and drizzle some hershey's chocolate syrup over the top. seriously? 30 minutes to do that? on a wednesday night at 8:30 pm?

coup de grace #2. their excuse? "oh, we're really busy tonight" really? when we were seated, there were 3 open table in our section alone, our section was never completely filled, and there were 4 open table when we left. and if they were sssooo busy, why didn't they make some attempt to turn this 6 top in less than 2 hours?

is the food good? yes, it is. is it worth the prices you're going to pay? imho, no. i have had as good a meal, at similar pricing, in dallas, chicago, nyc, even europe. but part of that experience, and part of what you're paying for, is superior service. you're simply not going to get that at this establishment.

tasty. i probably would have just gone to drink until i found out about tuesday 2 dollar taco night. quite a steal for the quality. the fish tacos were delicious, mahi mahi the night i went. we were also seated outside where in a tiny courtyard with a neat grill located in the middle. the ipa was very good and for dessert the luna stout was fantastic, will be returning....on a tuesday of course.

come here for the beer.. a definite standout establishment in the green bay area. the atmosphere is like a grand, modern, urban, cavernous, lounge in a hunting lodge (trust me, it works.) a few more words to describe their ambiance; concrete, candlelight, dark wood, purple velvet, freight elevator, terra cotta, fireplace, moose head, driftwood, seasonal, crisp, intelligent.

i enjoy the fact that they don't demand that you dress formal for such an upscale looking place. we sat next to a gentleman once who (how can i say this...) looked like a bum off the street. turns out he was a regular and comes here because he loves the people, the conversation, the atmosphere and most importantly, the beer. when you come into a place like this it's about enjoying what they have to offer, not impressing the ladies (or guys.)

i also like the variety of music that they play upstairs in the lounge, it's not always your stereotypical jazz, they like to throw in a couple a indie tunes once in a while. they also have only one television on low volume making it much less douche-y than your typical green bay bar/lounge. kudos for that.

hinterland is both a brewery and a restaurant but to be honest, my husband and i visit more often because he wants to enjoy something off the drink menu not the food menu. he absolutely loves the beer here, he (and all other male specimens that i know in the fox valley) claim that hinterland brews the best beer in the midwest. my father-in-law even stores his own beer stein here dedicated to hinterland's taps.

onto their food: we have eaten here twice, once for appetizers only and once for a full dinner (apps through desserts.) both times our experiences were excellent but not exquisite. their portion sizes are definitely smaller than what the crowd is used to up here in the midwest but are portioned perfectly to allow patrons to enjoy a full tour of what their varied menu has to offer.

with that said, there's nothing on this menu that an avid, competent home cook couldn't make in their own kitchen with access to the same ingredients (ie, truffles and truffle oil.) the food is definitely overpriced for what it is.

five stars for upping the ante in the green bay restaurant scene. minus one star for upping the price tag a bit too optimistically.

hinterland is a combination of a fine dining restaurant and a microbrewery. the restaurant resides in an old renovated building and the atmosphere is a mix of rustic and contemporary, with exposed brick walls and cement floors.

best of the best in gb. it is a great place to dine, but make sure you bring some coin. at $8-10 a drink, wine or beer (microbrew) it can add up real fast. portions aren't huge by any means, but who really wants to walk out of an elegant place like hinterland with a doggy bag. place to treat yourself once every 6 months...

how about a $4 hamburger? we tried hinterland the other night despite elliot's scathing review. thank-god we ignored him, the place is amazing. we ordered off the tapas menu which is not only affordable, but delicious and it really makes for a fun dining experience. we had a fantastic meal in a great atmosphere and didn't see raspberry sauce anywhere. i highly suggest checking out the tapas menu in the lounge to everyone looking for a dining experience unique to green bay. i especiall recomend hinterland to elliot because it is obvious he has never been there...

i am a great fan of hinterland but urban spoon is so wrong on pricing. it's more like 50 to 100 dolars a meal not 15 to 20 maybe on the kids menu that's how much the food is
