my favourite place forindiancuisine in joburg, and possibly south africa. their butter chicken is probably one of the best you will ever have. not a huge fan of their samoosas - they do them in the traditional northernindian'parcel' style with thick pastry and a very dry filling.

ambience is laid back and moody - quite a good place to go on a date.

i had heard that ghazel was one of the best northindianrestaurants in johannesburg - and they lived up to it! i popped in for a take away one friday evening, and was totally blown away! i ordered the chicken korma and a garlic naan - a generous portion and absolutely delicious! i will definitely be returning for a sit down dinner.

if you looking for good authentic northindianfood with great service and a nice set up, give ghazas a visit.

their curries are the right amount of flavor and spice and the smells will entice you.

my favorite is their chicken korma with fresh warm butter naan or their chicken boti- little nuggets of soft chicken marinated in spice and cooked on open fire.

try their onion badjia (chilli bite) as a starter or their paneer tikka, which is marinated cottage cheese on a skewer, roasted in clay oven.

their tikka prawn curry is an aromatic curry that is rich in flavours and spices.

ghazal is one of your best bets if you're in the need of goodindianfood. they don't disappoint and you are not going to leave disappointed. but i don't know, i've never warmed to this branch. the food is good but you try to understand why it cost that much. it also gets ridiculously busy and even though it's not loud and claustrophobic, you may feel like you need to go sooner than you should. all that being said, it's a must-try restaurant. who knows, you may feel completely different from me!

ghazal serves the best northindianfood i have ever had. the setting is lovely inside and the service was attentive, though there is a snobbish air about the host, regardless of whether you have reserved a table...makes you think twice about going back.

i recently organised a farewell dinner for a friend who lovesindiancuisine and the six of us thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

i adore the garlic and butter naan and the lamb korma. quite a few people have told me the chicken korma is the best, but i will not be swayed on this! trust me have the lamb. i can't eat very spicy food and ghazal knows how to make it non-spicy or spicy.

my other friends tried the chicken korma, curries and the breyani and we all enjoyed the food. i reserved a booth table and we had a blast, with a friendly and efficient waitress (she had her hands full we were the loudest table) by the time it came to dessert most of my friends were full (the portion sizes are quite decent).

i didn't need much persuasion to eat some italian kisses and ice cream and the others had coffees.

i think we were there for a good three hours or more. i like that we received good service and no-one acted like we should vacate the table quicker, it was a friday night so the restaurant was busy.

ghazal is a definite crowd pleaser, easy on the wallet with great tasting food. i know i always come back, although depending where i am, i have also eaten at the sunninghill branch (which is equally wonderful).

the service was great to begin with even though we went on new year's eve and the place was closing early. we ordered starters, including chicken samoosas and what i think were supposed to be chilli bites. both were quite tasty although neither had any form of chilli in them, so were a bit bland forindianfood. the samoosa was also made very differently from what we were used to (durban-style), with quite thick pastry. in my view, a samoosa should have thin, crispy pastry and have been pulled fresh from the hot oil minutes before being served.

for mains we ordered tandoori chicken with fries for myself and my wife tried the chicken in coconut and cumin sauce. both were great although my tandoori chicken was like eating fire (my fault, i should have opted for a medium heat) so i could only manage half. we had a great time but when the bill arrived the price of drinks spoiled the experience. r32 for a windhoek light?! seriously? come on, restaurant owners, people are tired of getting soaked for their drinks. and let's lose that corkage charge shall we? i can tell that in future we will be picking restaurants that don't charge corkage.

that said, when we are really lusting after some curry in mid-winter i may well give it another try but won't be ordering any beers, that's for sure.
