we came to the ghazal restaurant in bryanston for an early dinner on monday 2nd january 2017.
we were the first table to sit down for a dinner at the restaurant and were looking forward to agreatdinner. needless to say this did not happen.
our drinks arrived promptly which was fine and our waiter was polite, no problems there. our starters arrived, ( the platter for one) we ordered two to share between the four of us, the food was dry and bland.
we put this behind us in the anticipation of ordering agreatcurry to make up for this. after approx. an hour our curries had not arrived. i went to the managers to notify them of this, i was firstly asked if i was there for a take away which i replied ' we may as well have been as our food had not arrived after an hour'. secondly they had obviously not taken notice of where we were seated. we do not expect royal treatment please dont get me wrong, but considering we were one of about 5 tables at this point, i don't find this to be a difficult thing. having alerted the managers, i was assured that the managers would follow this up.
on my way back to our table i noticed one of the managers following me and as i sat down he said it's coming, i remarked to this with frustration given the situation and length of time we had been waiting for our food, to which he turned to our table and rudely raised his voice to me saying 'we have four chefs attending to your food sir, what more do you want me to do??!!' as he walked away i noticed him shaking his head at me.
shortly after this the curries arrived and the other manager approached us and apologised for the delay and said that staff had not shown up due to the public holiday, so which story do we go with? lots of staff attending to us or lack of staff??
now i do believe, firstly, that in the hospitality and retail industry, customers come first, secondly, to have been spoken to like that after our food has taken so long and we are paying the prices we are, i think this is highly unacceptable. further, to add to this i noticed that this particular manager who confronted me, was pouring a beer possibly for himself as it seemed like he was placing it under the top shelf of the booking sheet cabinet at the front of house greeting area. (this manager is the taller one with black hair and has a yugoslavian/eastern european sounding accent).
we often come to ghazal and have enjoyed ourselves. however, following this incident we shall not be back.
